    This has got to be one of my favorite channels on youtube. Not long after I started watching you guys, I purchased a microscope with a scope cam and have started my own journey through the microcosmos. Now I'm starting college in the fall. I'm going to be a microbiologist. I can't even begin to explain the impact this show has had on me. As silly as it sounds, watching this channel and peering through my tiny little toy microscope has launched a cascade of changes that have drastically altered my educational and career choices, my emotional state, and my outlook on life. You guys have been a comfort to me through some very difficult stretches of time, a little oasis of peace in a very scary part of my life. From the very bottom of my heart, thank you.

      This is what I said when sharing the "future of" vid with multiple secular homeschool fb groups I'm in: I'm so sad to see this channel ending, but I want even more for people to know about the ongoing treasure trove of vids that will continue to live here. Even if you've never been interested in microbiology, maybe _especially_ if you haven't, go check out a few. Pass the word about them, especially to kids. These are exactly the kinds of fresh looks at unicellular life (and other wee things) that can inspire a lifetime of passion for the field in some few of us lucky enough to see them. And we all need who those people will become, and what they'll discover.

    I read a book about whether consciousness exists in microbes, and there was an interesting tidbit about stentors. Apparently they can tell the difference between food and other debris, and they can actively filter out non-food particles when feeding. Pretty cool for a single-celled organism.

    • @sjzara
      @sjzara 8 місяців тому +6

      There definitely isn’t consciousness present. Consciousness requires the ability to model the world and your state within it. There is nowhere near the processing capacity in a single cell.

    • @NeovanGoth
      @NeovanGoth 8 місяців тому +3

      It's just a piece of molecular machinery reacting to sensory input. Conway's Game Of Life has shown that even a handful of very simple and fixed rules can result in surprisingly complex behavior.

    • @jordanwoods462
      @jordanwoods462 8 місяців тому +7

      Oh I totally agree with you guys. I didn’t mean to imply that they did have consciousness. That was just the premise of the book where I learned some cool things about stentors. The book was interesting though. It’s been a few years since I’ve read it, but I think I remember the author arguing that consciousness is all a spectrum, rather than binary, and I think it used these examples of simple machinery to beg the question of where consciousness starts. The book is called Minimal Selfhood and the Origins of Consciousness.

    • @sjzara
      @sjzara 8 місяців тому

    If you really think about it, if humans were able to fully regenerate a lost limb, or being cut in half, the recovery time would probably last weeks, to months, to probably even years. The fact that these little guys can regenerate within hours is so amazing. I know that size is an important factor here, but still. We may be much more complex creatures, but these guys definitely have the better superpower.

    Another delightful episode. Nice that you have sponsors and other financial supporters to fund this enjoyable and informative content. I would find it very appropriate to have your content available in the classrooms of our youth with hungry minds.
    I could imagine free access to libraries and community centers to showcase more quality STEM content like this.
    I encourage all whom like this channel to subscribe, hit the thumbs up button, and give your support that feeds the You Tube algorithm which helps this channel and any others you like. I makes a Huge difference to the creators.
    Hats off for the excellent writing, narration and fantastic editing. WoW! Those visuals. Having captioning available
    One more thing, everyone should be encouraged to post in the comments section. Good, bad, middle or critical. It really helps this team and the whole creative community when there is feedback. An interesting side effect of writing your comments down directly feeds the growth of this very content. This is a way of shining a light upon something you enjoy.

    From time about 1:12 to 1:30, what type of scope and slide were you using? I actually thought it was a CG render for a moment - it looks too perfect between the fully in focus stentors casting fuzzy shadows over what looks like an out of focus still from another microscope slide. I trust you that it's real footage, and that just makes me even more curious how it was filmed.

    Awesome 👌 regeneration is more prominent than I thought or was lead to think in school half century removed. But the encoded process has definitely risen to the most dominant of all in my lifetime. We got in a lot of trouble for asking for or predicting it's measure in school because it was at odds with evolution then. Only if the movement listened then maybe Swedish discovery of dna could've been modern biology starting point instead of 100 year delay. Lol
    The times & age sychology appears to have one last dualistic attempt to place emphasis on the in between indirect lines of detection vs more direct lines measured as being an area of interest for some of assembly Theory selection crowd, some of the emerging consciousness factions, and of course white noise analog is something we already know well from music or TV & movies that once it's to digitally clear it makes it hard for us to zone out into .we like distortion says hair metal eras lol
    But I do think it has some value in these areas of ( is it life or not ) what it means to be a live. It may be some avenues we are mistaking in that could very well be explained physically here even if it doesn't give us the programmed data orgins. Or maybe it is vice versa but I personally doubt it.

The internet can be as good as it can be bad, anyone can know anything anyone’s ever known, a kind of shared ever improving potential for our knowledge. In a first world country anything you dream of learning about is a simple Google search or UA-cam video away. Of course it’s not always that simple, you can’t believe everything you see or read but that’s not just the internet. That’s media in general, which is not my point. My point is that videos like this help educate the masses which is fundamental to our success as a society.
