Funny you mention Gelfer's Positional Chess Handbook because I'm going through that right now. It was recently suggested to me by... Kostya! Also going through Hellsten's endgame strategy books per your suggestion. Very much appreciate your advice and hard work, particularly for those of us who are really serious about chess improvement~
Amazing games! Reminded me of Morphy’s games in terms of unexpected moves and wow effect. Thanks for sharing! I am going to watch this video again and analyze the games more.
On thursday I watched this video, and on friday night I had a tournament game. My opponent played the bird and it was onl the second time in my "career" I was faced with it (and the first time my opponent was tring it, so I wasn't prepared). I asked myself how I was going to respond to it, then I went for some kind of Schlecteresque strategic decision, based on this video - except that he took the bishop I developped with his Nf3-h4 knight -, and it work like a charm ! So thank you for this video, it was very instructive and already usefull in the first game I played after seeing it !
Shirov's gamee is truelly fantastic and shows how good he was at calculation. But what Karpov did in the last game is absolutely amazing. Black must have felt like someone with cancer in his final days. A painful slow death and there's nothing to stop it..
The Shirov game was not instructive. It was desperation. He did not see to the end from the first exchange sac. Therefore, the final 2 sacrifices were desperation because he already knew he was lost if he didn't make something happen. Poor play by his opponent, especially the knight trade, giving up a king side pawn.
Games:
Schlechter - John: 0:35
Pilnik - Geller: 8:04
Tolush - Botvinnik: 11:18
Lautier - Shirov: 17:33
Karpov - Lautier: 24:30

What a beautiful endgame from Karpov! Makes you want to play one of your own.
One of my favorite chess instruction videos ever!

Most instructive video

I'll wager a cold beverage of choice that Botvinnik's exchange sac was all home brewed.

Even the first exchange sac was bad. That's what started the desperation. Shirov got lucky.
Just to be clear, the other 4 games were great.
its da ruk :)
