The Tank Museum is truly blessed with some outstanding advocates. Richard, and "The Two Davids" (Willey and Fletcher) are terrific teachers!
Agreed. Ppl need to stop supporting these military right wing orginazations (NGOs) bc they instigated brexit and anti Islamic sentiments.
Plus this tank museum is just some rich guys collection that he helps pay for by showing it off to the plebs 🤣😅
Gotta love our society
Richard may be the most underrated thing at the tank museum since the Bren carrier
Richard is one of the best talkers I've ever heard - knowledge, boundless enthusiasm and humour - this man would be a fantastic lecturer!
Agree 100% same with David willy and Fletcher. I'm guessing they lecture students as 'practice'
@@spencerphillips5019 I have the same issue with some of the videos I watch about cars (Americans do great videos but they talk really slowly).
Just set the video speed to 1.25 if it helps :)
He _is_ really good speaker. And I like his talking pace a lot, because I'm German and I find him very understandable. His choice of words, his speed, the structure in his presentation, these are all things that make listening to him very enjoyable for me.
I really enjoyed number 2... I think a lot of other people would love to see some videos highlighting the more obscure and not so conventional exhibits that the museum has on display, because I know I would!
As a disabled veteran war pensioner unlikely to ever return to Bovi. I would like that too. When visiting a museum it is easy to be blinded by the eye candy. The WOW! factor of Tiger 131 springs to mind. But quite often the real gems are hidden away or require some reading before they can be appreciated.
I love how Richard used his list to discuss things other than the technical stats and battle histories of the tanks he's picked. Those things are interesting too but it is easy to find that sort of information. The perspective provided in today's video was interesting for its freshness as well as for its content.
“Top five cats that look like Hitler.” i can’t wait for that one. You have to love Richards sense if humour.
“Cats that LOOK A LITTLE BIT LIKE Hitler”, mind you! On has to take life in moderation :D:D:D
We've got to see a little hitler kitty popping his head out of the top of the Tiger while it's running. 😉
I absolutely loved this video, especially the story about his dad. I'm convinced Mr. Smith could make a Top 5 Favorite Track Pins video and it'd still be entertaining and inspiring.
His number one choice brought a tear to my eye, as it made me think about my deceased father and our relationship. It was also so personal for him and it really demonstrated his passion for tanks. Beautiful.
What an exquisitely presented and argued selection of tanks. Richard has taken me into the cerebral territory of cultural significance with tank as artifact of human endeavour. My mind's eye is left smiling at the ease with which I was guided on this complex journey through some of the museum's holdings with my curiosity both stimulated and sated. Thank you.
Wordsmith crafted comment. This is the standard of contribution which would make the entire Internet an invaluable enviable asset for humanity.
What a pleasure to watch for so many reasons:
First the wonderful British English spoken. That pronunciation, melody, stressing etc. Splendid! (I am German, btw)
Then the dedication to the topic that speaks from every sentence.
The pure facts and information conveyed.
The reflection on the historical work you are doing.
The legitimate and based reasoning.
The mild subtle humour.
Ex-cel-lent.
Stunning. I love the combination of enthusiasm, knowledge and intelligence. Every tank museum youtube video exhibits these features as the presenters are all outstanding. The Director always brings an oblique perspective which is , similarly, always engrossing. “What is ‘significant. discuss ?” . Love it! These videos make my Friday :) .Thank you all so much - not just the presenter but the whole team behind these videos.
With a passion like that, I'm glad you have Richard as the Director. If only kids were taught like this in school.
Not just a Top 5, what an amazing personal Top 5, No.1 definitely deserved it
Its very sad that the mark v doesnt run any longer, but equally your decision, and backed up by your Father with his extensive knowledge with metal, has saved this Tank for ever, so that it will be enjoyed forever,
Its a significant piece of history and to some extent, it wasn't ever meant to run for 100 years. More like run for 100km over its lifetime and they'd consider it a wildly successful machine if it achieved that in the conditions and duress of the day it was used.
Heck, if it made it 10km in anger you'd get a good job boys medal!
Number 2 was stunning. I adored everything about that presentation.
It was almost a religious experience. The personal universe of Mr. Smith is a special one. Thank-you sir.
Love the Director in this video. I really appreciate the enthusiasm and passion they have! The story to about D6 was moving!
The passion with which TOG II is praised is humorous; considering the fact that it was basically a model of what not to do in building a tank for that time.
I can’t think of better Hosts than who The Tank Museum has provided us.
Thank you for staying with enthusiasts, Veterans, and historians as presenters. It is the main reason why I don’t miss any new videos, and hope to visit the museum in person one day.
(p.s if the museum ever offered a paid VR “tour” of general and/or specific exhibits, I would gladly pay for that privilege.)
The quality of engaging with the people on YT of these curators made them very significant.
I have to say I really like Richard's presentations. He has a great perspective that's refreshingly different. I could listen to him all day.
Director Richard has much enthusiasm and tells good personal stories and makes good decisions...
Who would have thought a tank video would bring tears to my eyes, but here we are. Some more stories of hero's is what the world needs right now.
I was definitely not expecting that sentence to end with "cats that look a bit like Hitler". Well played, Sir, well played.
Loved the final story about the Mark V. Richard is absolutely right, the personal perspective, what the object represents and means to the viewer, it's just a personal and totally wonderful thing. Bravo! Fantastic episode! 👏
Richard is incredibly brilliant, he's always interesting to listen to and he made this tank chat very personal to himself.
We've spent many years learning about tanks, but it's nice to spend some time learning about *the* tanks and history.
The personal story of the displays it what gives them their individuality compared to picture and video.
Richard really seems to know the intrinsic value of a historical piece
I meet Richard Smith in The Tank Museum during a Tiger Day, he came over to Me and My brother . He is as enthusiastic in real life as he is in the videos. Seems a really decent bloke.
I think this is quite possibly my favourite Tank Museum video on You Tube. Funny. Thought Provoking. Moving. Really really good.
Educational, classic British humor, Monty Python reference, yes please 🙏 😀 . Seriously thank you guys very much love the content.
Glad to see this from a different viewpoint, figuratively and literally.
Good video Richard, I especially enjoyed all that you said about my grandfather Michael. I also understand you recently chatted with my niece on her visit to the museum.
From across the pond: hat's off to your father! Given the isolationist spirit in the United States at the time (and the fact that the United States Army did not have many tanks itself and was not keen to ship off the ones being made) getting that tank - and the ones that followed - was quite an accomplishment. I'm glad he got a shout out in this video; it was well deserved.
Actually Director Smith, I really enjoyed your top 5 reprise. It was thoughtful, and the stories were well told. While in England in 2018 I visited the Tank Museum with my wife and children I have seen all of these vehicles, and we appreciate them, the efforts of David Willey, and David Fletcher and all of your talented maintainers. You added just a little more "life" to all included in your top 5 video presentation. Thank you!
Superb raconteur. Here is a man who has a unique ability to convey information with humour and depth .
This, sir, was epic. I love the concept and the Mk1 D6 section had me cracking up at the start! 99/100 just needs more mustache 😁👍
It is trully wonderful to see and continue to see your genuine enthusiasm and emotions from a director. Too many directors are all about bottom line costs and numbers but you clearly love your job and subject matter. The others are clearly professional and knowledgeable but your enthusiasm is a big boon!
This really is a surprisingly lively channel and these Top 5 videos particularly so.
Surely everyone at the Museum should be allowed to do another top 5. Fantastic video with the Director, hard not to love his enthusiasm and passion.
What an outstanding video. Such a great and enthusiastic talker. Loved his previous videos too
Your passion is a blessing sir!
As you were.
Carry on.
What a fantastic video, great perspective with tank specific stories and the sentimental value of them, and then to add a pinch of sarcasm and comedy, I loved it
Edit: like literally I was laughing one moment and getting misty eyed the next
What a stunning display of everything that makes a museum worthwhile. Wish I could like this video 5 times--once for each selection.
...But then, I also wish I hadn't gotten my dad killed in a wildebeest stampede. Ah well. I guess we can't have everything.
Thank you so much for opening up to us there at number 1. It warmed my heart.
Richard's appearance here is one of the few really good things to come out of lockdown...always a welcome commentator!
There are lots of top/bottom 5 tanks on The Tank Museum UA-cam channel and I have watched a lot of them, this is fantastic and goes straight to the top of my list. Bravo!
I truly love Richard Smith. A bona-fide honest and true tank nerd.
Came for the tanks. Stayed for the fascinating lecture on the theory and practice of museum curation. What a splendidly fascinating presentation. Thank you.
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed each of his videos. He offers unusual perspectives, and explains them plainly and directly. I’m always left in a thoughtful mood.
How to paint a completely different picture of the things you love and admire and still come away gushing from it all….. Only The Tank Museum and their amazing staff can do this…. Bravo!
My Dad was a bit of a metal basher.....he used to run the Oxford University Materials Department.
The most British statement ever.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Richard needs to do more videos.
I really enjoy listening to this man.
Richard Smith is a national treasure. If he's not yet been knighted, I urge the Royal Palace to do so immediately.
Noted in the advert for the shop that Richard has an OBE. He needs to be elevated.
Best military museum in the WORLD IMHO! Must get back there soon.
Lovely to see the director back and still enthusing about the subject
i´ve had the pleasure to visit the museum and lay hands on Tiger 131, it was incredible to start it with the crank, yes, it is big and heavy, but the moment the Maybach Engine launches up it becomes a true spectacle
Hats off to you, Sir, for your knowledge, passion and sense of humor
Recommendation to the Video team. Your Museum has fantastic workshops with experienced engineers & some apprentices. Make a Top FIVE by both? One by an old hand, an experienced engineer. AND a second by a young apprentice possibly a girl.
Perhaps show both together discussing how they each love tanks because they work on them. Please include the workshop environment, few see it and it's an amazing place. This will give a totally different perspective on this living museum.
Wonderful choices and wonderful exposition. This is what a Top (Bottom) 5 tanks video should be.
Such great enthusiasm, than you for all the work the tank museum team do to keep this history alive, so much respect for you all.
Great Top 5 Richard. I like the theme a lot and the stories behind the important tanks you chose were fascinating. Keep up the great work.
A fantastic example of museum curation. You guys have an audience and you excell at telling the story of the artifacts that you have the honour to curate.
This is an extraordinary concept for a top 5. When I visit a museum I absolutely love finding out about the particular items in the collection and not just as a representation of others of its type and so this video really connected to everything I love about museums. And Mr Smith speaks so passionately about the vehicles and their individual importance (not to mention his wonderful humor) that’s it is impossible not to be captured by his enthusiasm.
Love your passion for history and thank you for sharing
This is my favorite tank chat, and I've seen them all.
This has to be one of, if not the most enjoyable top 5s I've heard so. Interesting and informative, with the addition of the personal angle. Very well done indeed Richard. As someone else has a said the Tank Museum is very lucky to have you and others like you say the helm.
I've just discovered a new found fondness for Richard thanks largely to a Monty Python flesh wound reference and describing Jingles as an influencer. Great work. Love the stories of deeper meaning here.
What a great video, such a different slant and very informative. One of the best I have seen on UA-cam.
*Amazing!!!Glad to see informative video, Good work bros!!!*
This is a significant contribution to military history. Well done.
Always worth listening to, considered, well informed & entertaining. More please.
RHIP Richard, it's as simple as that. "I'm making a second one because I say I am."
I love Tanks and I love you guys. Thank you for preserving history and all you do. Great list!
Absolutely fantastic video thank you so much!
Respect to the man who did all the research and leg work
Wow that mk1 D6 is a stunner ! Thank you for telling us about it and particularly about Legg
Ever worthwhile to listen to this gentleman
I’m your number one fan! Haha I’m so glad they made another Richard Smith video. He’s my favorite, without a doubt.
I could listen to him for hours. What a great speaker and a fantastic guy, with so much passion for his work!
Really enjoyed this "top 5's" -- perhaps the best one so far. Thank you.
Just splendid. What a great group of insights from Richard. Loved this.
As a TOG II fan, it warms my heart to see it in a top five list at last.
Some wonderful exhibits with their stories told quite brilliantly and in a very engaging way- thank you.
You should do a 3d print of the D6 side plate and offer them for sale. Lots of old tankers would love to have one for their display at home.
Your story about your Dad is wonderful and I can relate even if mine does not involve a tank.
Verry nice background stories of the tanks, love these stories. Visited the museum in 2017 and hope to visit it again verry soon. Keep up the great work.
Fascinating points of view and especially the story behind your final choice. Thanks for sharing.
Brilliant video, great stories, we need more.
Absolutely brilliant! What a fantastic communicator, you enthusiasm is infectious, sir! I'm looking forward to my next visit down to the museum.
Brilliant list really really enjoyed that. Well done the Tank Museum.
My favorite one of these. Passionate, informative, and personal.
I love the director's enthusiasm ! I hope he plans to make some more videos.
I can understand why you had to retire the MK V. I finally retired my 1918 BSA No. III* SMLE after 100 years of cordite and corrosive primers.....bore is a bit pitted, but the barrel is still pretty good. They built them to last in those days. After looking at the wonderful set of cartocuhes (sp) on the butt, Ian Skennerton told me it has been all over the Empire, from being manufactured at Sparkbrook to ending up in Australia.
Great vid and list - especially no.2!
Marvelous Video!!! Thank You!!!
This was truly an outstanding video.
It's always fun to see someone who loves their job. This is one example of that. :D
Thank you so much I subscribed to patreon today because of your vid. You have the best voice and your earnestness really sealed the deal for me
I suppose the best example of machinery as poetry in motion is the steam locomotive. In a museum they are cold and sterile, in steam they come alive. There's something similar with tanks. In moving they clank, they emit exhaust, they rumble, they look far more threatening and they look the way a soldier would have seen them - and that recreation of reality is so very important in understanding them.
And that ladies and gentlemen is why this man is the director of the museum.
