Ladies and gentlemen, this is what's known as a person going ABOVE AND BEYOND, in order to just help other people learn. That spreadsheet is insanely useful as a learning resource.
Thank you so much for this, truly. This is exactly the list I think many of us needed to take that leap to get into more Japanese gaming! I was waiting to see if you’d add 零の軌跡 and 碧の軌跡 at any point but they never came up. From recollection it is fully voice acted with a “recent” log, and its push to continue with NPC’s changing dialogue constantly! Just thought I’d throw one more game on this already MASSIVE list :) thank you so much for all your hard work seriously Edit: ALSO, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim!!!!! Surprised that didn’t appear!
Your channel is really helping me on my Japanese learning journey. You deserve so much more (but my wallet won’t allow it 😅). Please accept this token of my gratitude.
Hi Matt! Thank you so much for referencing Wagotabi in your video! We look forward to your in-depth analysis. The Wagotabi team has spent these last 4 years continuously improving Wagotabi through player and teacher playtesting. Receiving your valuable feedback would be truly humbling! よろしくお願いします 🙇
Dude... Are you okay??? This is a colossal amount of work. Don't get me wrong, I love it, and I will play half of this games to study, but you look like you haven't slept in weeks. You deserve the like and subscribe and much more. Thank you!!
For the first time ever i read a sentence and understood it in super Mario Brothership that wasn't something like "あたまいたい" And i feel a compulsion to say thank you to this channel
God damn. I was literally thinking yesterday "I really should try to play some games in Japanese, but I have no idea which games would be good for learning". And today you drop this insane treasure trove. Thanks
This is amazing. I’ve been manually searching screenshots and lets plays of videos of games one at a time to check off what has furigana and voice acting, logs, and replaying audio. It takes forever. Thank you and your team of contributors for doing all this hard work and making it easy!
I hate not being able to give you more than just one like in this video. What can I tall you, it's amazing what you did here. I'm very thankful. Thank you so much!

I don't know how to thank you for this. I've played a lot of JRPG's in English but now I've been studying Japanese, so I'd like to give it a try playing in Japanese. Thanks for the recommendations.
Hello! I Just want to say that we really appreciate all your effort and time for making this huge video and ranking so many different games for us to learn Japanese! I'll definitely be playing a lot of this games and continue to come back to re watch this video!
Tokyo School Life is a game intended for learning Japanese language and culture (interestingly developed by M2), hence why it’s so difficult to find other game like that. The MC is a foreign exchange student spending some months in a Japanese high school, the story isn’t brilliant, but it’s good enough to learn some curiosities about Japanese society and culture. Great video! 👍
Thank you so much for this Matt! I have recently started my Japanese learning journey, and this will be an absolutely essential resource that I will use over time to help figure out what games will be right for me to learn!
Great Video! Wanted to mention for others out there that the version of Dragon Quest XI on Steam in the US doesn't just not have furigana but doesn't have any Japanese text at all! So if you want to play it in Japanese you'll have to download a mod. The mod also adds furigana support.
I didn’t see the other Level-5 gem, Gyrozetter! Transforming licensed cars like the Toyota GT86 into mecha and battling JRPG turn based style. Furigana, push to advance and voice acting. Recommend for car enthusiast/jrpg crossover enthusiasts!
For Steam games you can easily go to your library and go to properties for the game and select the language you want. Sometimes this will install that language's version of the game. So it will be fully in Japanese if selected. If already installed the game will reinstall but your saves should still be usable.
Your channel is simply unmatched when it comes to the intersection of usefulness, entertainment, effort, and frequency. Your videos have driven me to take the dive and get the first Shin-chan game in Japan for my own practice. It's definitely a bit tricky because of how casual the language is, but amazing for pushing practice! Thank you so much for all you do, Matt!
Woah, I just found this and haven't watch it yet but just seeing the Timestamps.... THIS IS SO USEFUL. Seriously, years looking for something like this for game immersion in the language. Thank you so much!
DUDE! You are incredible. The amount of time and consideration and EFFORT you put into your channel is unparalleled. This video is next level. So so helpful. Thank you so so much ❤
Thank you so much for this. This is an amazing resource. As someone who wants to take that next step and start playing games fully in Japanese, this is a great place to start finding good stuff for playing and learning. Thank you again!
I appreciate this so, so, so much. Thank you! Am in Fukuoka right now and hope to grab a game or two from the top of the list at Book off :) thanks for all the hard work!
Amazing, I just tried playing Pokemon Scarlet instead of Let's Go Eevee to see if furigana made a difference and it was a huge game changer! This is exactly what I would have wanted! Thank you!!
What a time to be alive! I can’t believe I discovered this only a few days after you post it. And I’m a sucker for a good spreadsheet. Can’t wait to dive in!
You're absolutely wild for making a video like this. Thanks! By the way, if you also own a PC, you can play a lot of these games on emulators, where you have a pause button regardless of the game, so you can pause even cutscenes! Pair that with an OCR like Cloe and you can copy paste stuff into your translators with ease. You don't need a strong PC for emulators anymore either.
This is super helpful and I love the content! One suggestion though for next time: maybe group the games or video sections by console because some people might not have some consoles, and will have to skip through the video to find games that they can actually play. Thank you for the helpful tier list!
Man, thank you so much. This tier and list helped me a lot. I just wanna learn Japanese the same way as i learned english back when i was a kid. I'm currently playing persona 3 reload, but when i switched to JP, sadly there's no furigana. 😢
1:24:20 One of the reasons I was able to quickly learn hiragana and katakana was when I was playing this game in PS2 and reading the furigana. I only previously got the game in Japanese and I wasnt trying to learn Japanese yet back then😂 So happy this was mentioned! Thanks for such a comprehensive list
you are one of the biggest GOATS thanks for the hard work!! I started with nintendo 3ds games like mario, kirby yo kai watch and pokemon. Nintendo ist just a great place to learn japanese as an actual toddler would learn
Wow this is a massive contribution to the Japanese learning society. Anyone learning Japanese for an extended period of time has thought about this. I have been learning for 6 years and I have not come across a resource like this. I am grateful for the time and effort put in and everyone else should be too. I came away from this with some games my son could play. Thank you! 🤙
2:58:30 OMG you finally acknowledge this game, I've been posting it each time I could Love this video, and this was the icing on the cake Thanks Matt ❤
I’ve been watching your great videos and learning Japanese from the Genki books. I’m looking forward for the days that I’ll be able to seamlessly understand Japanese while playing those video games. I still struggle with full comprehension even after 1 year of study. Thanks for your encouragements.
This is amazing, thank you so much! I was wanting to play some games in Japanese for practice, but had no idea where to start and how to find which games might be good for it. I already own two games in the S tier, so will try those out. This must have taken so much time, appreciate it ♥
Amazing video and a bunch of games that I've never heard of that look interesting! Another helpful video would be a voice acting tier list, similar to this one except involving games with voice acting.

I have been learning for 6 years and I have not come across a resource like this. I am grateful for the time and effort put in and everyone else should be too. I came away from this with some games my son could play.
Thank you!
🤙

So happy I found your channel 😊 planing on NiNoKuni and Dragon Quest 11S for now :D it’s pretty draining to play my first game though 😅
Amazing guide!
this is amazing, glad i've been subbed to you. God bless!
I’ve been watching your great videos and learning Japanese from the Genki books. I’m looking forward for the days that I’ll be able to seamlessly understand Japanese while playing those video games. I still struggle with full comprehension even after 1 year of study. Thanks for your encouragements.
Thanks for your hard work. You make it way easier and even help us save money
Man, your work is just so useful. I love you
you're doing god's work thank you king
This is amazing, thank you so much! I was wanting to play some games in Japanese for practice, but had no idea where to start and how to find which games might be good for it. I already own two games in the S tier, so will try those out.
This must have taken so much time, appreciate it ♥
Amazing video and a bunch of games that I've never heard of that look interesting! Another helpful video would be a voice acting tier list, similar to this one except involving games with voice acting.
Amazing as always, this is a great resource!
Thank you Matt!
amazing job i already found like 5 games and theres even more i need to look into.
you really outdid yourself with this!
Damn thats a lot of hard work. Cheers
