I love Sophia Chang and her book: iconic and instrumental to the culture. I am glad GMA did this interview. Hip Hop in the early days gave us pride. She’s right: mainstream media had almost zero representation of non-whites.

I was the same way. Black/white girl brought up in a white world and I wanted to be white. I didn't appreciate my black side til my 30s. I love the fact that she too realized how important her Asian culture was and that being white would not make her happy. Wanting to be white was her downfall bc it disconnected her from her roots. How inspiring!

    Personal Story.
I knew Chang for a number of years via My Grocery Store gig (where I still work) in Union Square/Greenwich Village in New York. She came up to Me while I was stocking shelves concerning a product. Then ended up coming to My register. We hit if off really well. And whenever She came by, Chang would always to ask how I was doing, small talk, etc.
Some years ago, after visiting Oregon (where I lived for about 14 years) for a few weeks, I came back to work. A lot of the young Cats were constantly coming up to Me asking Me about Sophia. Some, who were more into latter Hip-Hop/Rap than I was. That's when I found out about Her ties to Wu-Tang Clan and that HULU Documentary. I truly had no idea. I always treated Chang as a GREAT and one of My favorite Customers. Not knowing Her background. My Co-Workers thought I had some sort of connection and "Come-Up".
I was being hassled for days about it.😂😂😂
Though I've not seen Chang in some time.
She's really Genuine and Good People.
I'm happy for Her "newfound" notoriety these last few years.

Duh...you are living in America, which was the vision of white men. I don't know why you people have such a problem with that. Do you go to Japan and complain about Japanese culture? Do you go there and demand them to change for you? This is why I can't stand woke minority liberals, and I say this as an Asian woman who came to America as a newborn infant. If you hated yourself then that is YOU. I never hated myself nor my culture. I never blamed white Americans for anything. In fact, only in America and white Americans do I have this amazing opportunity. Otherwise, I'd be stuck in Laos where my people are treated worse than second class citizens.

1:31 she is so right about first generation immigrants losing their language. The goal of assimilation is real. As a kid you're trying to fit in and one of the ways to do that is by speaking English. Then when you're older and realize the value of having another language, it's already lost and almost impossible to get back.

This is exactly what inclusion is all about. Everything in our society tells you that you are "an other". Why would anyone want to be on the side that gets no representation? That's why instead of abandoning people that look like you, it's important to keep fighting for it. That also goes for people who have privilege showing representation for those who don't and I cherish those people.
