Barbara Noble has a few books published by Persephone books. I can highly recommend Doreen by her as well. I also LOVE fiction set in the first half of the 20th century!
I agree with you about the weird coziness of books set during the world wars--those are my comfort reads and it's so morbid but I love learning about life during those times and the character portraits of people who weren't off fighting in the trenches. The Maisie Dobbs series by Jacqueline Winspear especially is my favorite example of this, I think you might like it if you haven't read it already!
I recently read ‘Doreen’ by Barbara Noble, published by Persephone, and really loved it. Thanks for the recommendation I’ll be ordering ‘The house opposite’.
I loved housemaid book as a easy to read almost comfort blanket read on a wet day. I read it in a day which I havnt done for a very long time with books. I went in blind not expecting much perhaps that helped too. 😂
Enjoyed hearing your thoughts on all of these Lauren, especially The Ministry of Time. I just bought that one at the airport. I'm really looking forward to reading it ☺
The Housemaid wasn't for me either, glad it's not just me as it's very popular! My September faves were two from Donal Ryan; The Spinning Heart & Heart, Be at Peace 😃
Factory Girls is set in Tyrone ( my county). The Shirt Factory was a big employer here. Best books of September Highway Thirteen by Fiona McFarlane The English Understand Wool The Burgess Boys , Abide With Me by Elizabeth Strout
Fun fact: the Spanish public TV sued the BBC (of the author of The Ministry of time) because there’s a Spanish series called El Ministerio del Tiempo with exactly the same story!
I’m currently reading Storm Pegs by Jen Hadfield and it feels very Names for The Sea to me - it’s about Jen’s move to Shetland and navigating her life there. I bought it to read on my holiday to Shetland a few weeks ago and it was so nice to be reading it in a coffee shop that was then mentioned in the book. I think you’d really like it, Lauren ☺️
I agree re The Housemaid although I listened to it so I think I had a higher tolerance. I listened to the second book and that was where I drew the line, omg it was ridiculous!!
September 1. Gilmore Girls: At Home in Stars Hollow by Micol Ostow, Illustrated by: Cecilia Messina 2. The Fall by Ryan Cahill 3. The Lady of the Camellias by Alexander Dumas Jr. 4. The Magicians by Lev Grossman 5. One for my Enemy by Olivie Blake 6. A Winter’s Promise (Mirror Visitor) by: Christelle Dabos, Narrator: Emma Fenney I read The Secret Garden last year and loved it. I've only seen the adaptation with Maggie Smith as Mrs. Medlock. May she rest in peace.
I read The House Opposite earlier this year, and loved it. I have Doreen by Barbara Noble, but haven't read it yet...am rationing it 😂 Just finished The Photograph by Penelope Lively, which I thought was superb.
The two Maid books by Nita Prose I enjoyed, the TV drama Maid with Andie MacDowell and her daughter I enjoyed. So I think I’m all good on maids right now and will skip the Housemaid books.
i just picked up a Dean Street Press book called Tom Tiddler's Ground by Ursula Orange (1941), which i've heard amazing things about, so i'm glad to hear The House Opposite is great as well! out of curiosity i checked to see how many holds The Housemaid has on it at my library. 126 lol. god help us

Makes me so happy that you really enjoyed Hedgewitch - and yes all the brownie and girl guide vibes! 😊 Woodwitch is just as much fun!

I read some bangers in September. My two favourites were Fayne by Anne Marie Macdonald and Under the Pendulum Sun by Jeanette Ng.
Such a great video. So many amazing books to try. Thanks.

The feelings on the housemaid is the same way I feel about strictly and reality tv 😅
I felt the same way about The Housemaid! Definitely going to add some of the others you talked about to my tbr

The cover to the silence in between literally goes with your cardigan, your chair and your blanket. Stupid comment, I know, but it does 😂
The Housemaid…….in the bin! Thanks for another great video Lauren. Cheers Chris 🇦🇺😁

You'll probably love 'She and her Cat' too. It's gorgeous and not too sad! Also translated from Japanese 🐱
Not sure I’d like Frieda McFadden either!! Have just reserved Rewitched from my library - thank you
I bought Rewitched last weekend, and I can’t wait to devour that either.
Seems we're moving into cardy season, I'm not sure I have one. Sounds like you had a great reading month.

Lauren you are in for a treat. Dean Street Press books are great. I don’t think there is one I haven’t enjoyed. Try DE Stephenson or Susan Scarlett
Thank you so much for the recommendations, how exciting to know there is more great stuff out from from Dean Street Press! :)
Lauren - Ministry of Time is going to be a tv series by BBC
Amazing news! Thanks for letting me know!
Just had a look on Storygraph and apparently Persephone Books have published another Barbara Noble book but it looks quite different.
Wonderful news, I will have to go and check out the persephone Barbara Noble! Thanks for letting me know.

Think you secretly want to read the next Housemaid book 😂😂
YOU'VE FOUND ME OUT!
Did you get the real character reference in The Ministry of Time ? Gore was part of the failed Antartica mission.
I did, I loved the photo of him at the end!
