      If it's not possible to add more RAM, then you might also consider removing what you have and add different modules. You need to check what your motherboad supports. If you already have 2x 4GB modules, you might be able to upgrade it to 2x 8GB modules.
      If you have a PC that doesn't have enough RAM in 2021, it might be a good idea to start save up for a new one.

As of late they are all quite stream line compared to Windows. It also depends on the major distribution you using being Debian based (Ubuntu/Linux Mint/PopOS,) RedHat (Fedora), Arch (Manjaro).

    When my wife was getting a new laptop about six years ago, I told her to be sure it had a numeric keypad, because in those days Blender's interface depended so heavily on the numeric keypad for navigation.
    Now that they've revised the interface it doesn't seem to be such a big deal.

    • @Belidos3D

      @@Belidos3D You can set up a hotkey for a pie menu that gives you the same options as the numpad. The problem for me is that the numpad is on the right side of the keyboard, so I can't comfortably reach it with my left hand, so I need to move my right hand from my mouse and back every time. With the hotkey you can change viewing angles in the blink of an eye. Haven't gotten used to it yet, though, so I'm still with the numpad. I literally just went big on a PC this week. I had been researching for almost a year. Was using a 2021 MacBook Pro and new it was time for a dedicated machine. Mac is great for most creative workflows, but not for 3d. The difference I see is night and day for rendering or anything else that relies on the GPU. Plus addons and tutorials are all geared toward Windows OS. That said, if you’re just starting out, you’re going to be doing simple models and won’t be doing heavy rendering. If you have a Mac, you’ll be totally fine so don’t let that stop you from starting.

    I’ve learned blender on a Macbook Pro and it served me well. I only used the touchpad and don’t have a numpad on my keyboard. Even when the rendering was slow as hell, I had a great time learning Blender. Recently I’ve bought a Windows laptop with Ryzen 9 5900H and a mobile RTX 3080. I also bought a good mouse and there is a numpad on the keyboard. While the rendering is a lot faster now, I still have trouble using a mouse. Even for the easiest things in Blender I need more time. I think I need some time before I am comfortable with the mouse and Windows system.

    Thanks for this, Grant. Just what I needed as my 2015 Win 8.1 gaming laptop ( Intel I7 cpu & Nvidia GTX 970m) is dying and is just not cutting it for some things I want to do with Blender. This gives me a baseline for research on my next computer.
    There is so much info out there, and so many choices, yet it is difficult to get the kind of info needed to make the best "bang for buck" decisions when it comes to "the best computer for Blender."
    Some of my past mistakes include:
    Saving a few bucks today, vs future proofing
    Assuming that what's good for gaming is good for Blender, as Blender uses resources differently.
    Buying a laptop for running Blender: Too expensive and too many tradeoffs just to save some space and have some mobility. Laptops that can run Blender are just not that mobile anyway.
    It would be fantastic if you were to go into more detail on what makes a good computer for Blender, esp. for those of us with a small budget, needing to make the best decisions about tradeoffs.
    You have a gift for explaining complex topics clearly. Thank you.

    My PC running Blender and Unity is:
    Win 10 and Linux Mint / Arch
    Asus Sabertooth FX990 R2
    AMD 8350
    RAM 32GB DDR3
    Lots of SSDs
    AMD RX 580 8GB GPU
    2 23" monitors
    1 43" TV / Monitor
    Coolermaster 240L Water Cooler. 2nd one that last one lasted 6 years. Really good.
    People may laugh at my system, but it runs solid and no crashes.

  • @Belidos3D

    Something i have never understood with Blender is the GPU usage, pretty much the whole foundation of Blender is OpenGL based, it uses OpenGL workflow for its normals (-Y in the green channel) so you would think that it's renderer would prefer to use OpenGL graphics cards (AMD are best at this), yet it's preferred rendering output is Cuda which is NVidia's strongest point and Cuda prefers a DirectX environment. Such contradictions lol.
    Personally though, i find that while a good GPU and CPU makes a big difference, memory is higher importance followed by GPU, with CPU in third place, the more memory you have the more geometry you can use before it begins to slow down. My reasoning it based on creating high detail geometry, GPU is important for rendering, but it's useless if you don't have enough memory to support the millions of polygons some people need, and besides you can use online rendering farms instead of your own machine, and CPU's have a lot less impact overall than both memory and GPU, so i would personally say for GPU you need a minimum of a 10xx series Nvidia and for memory a minimum of 16gb to 32gb and if you have slow renders either live with it or use a rendering farm until you can get a better card.

    • @kornholioefx
      @kornholioefx 2 роки тому +1

      I'm not entirely sure, but I believe this is mostly down to Cuda Cores. A lot of optimized rendering/AI is accelerated using the Cuda Cores and associated libraries.

    A few things to note: although 10 series graphics cards can render with optix, they do not benefit due to lacking RT cores, and will actually render slightly faster using CUDA. As an example of the massive render performance gap between 10 and 20 series: a 2060 will render the bmw scene roughly 30% faster than a 1080ti using optix. It's important to understand that this is just one metric, and does NOT mean a 2060 is 30% better than a 1080ti. (A 1080ti has a 54% higher effective speed.) However, to anyone considering a 10 series card for Blender: I would strongly recommend getting the 20 series or higher equivalent. You will literally render twice as fast, because optix.

    • @LaszloIvanyi
      @LaszloIvanyi 2 роки тому +1

      Since putting together a machine for different parts, unless you have the same parts, performance improvements might be a bit tricky to measure. When buying a new PC the deciding factor is usually not the small details of differences but rather how much money you have and what you will use it for.. If you plan to build a new PC for modelling, I'd say, dual 32" monitors, 16-32gb fast memory, at least 1 TB SSD, a modern intel CPU as close to current gen as you can afford, and a good VGA specifically made for 3D are a good starting points. brands are not that important for smaller parts but if you get a bigger brad, that's usually more compatible.
      Small details like what's the difference between 16GB RAM and 32 GB? not much, let's say 10-15% depending on configuration, brand, channel speed etc.. What's the difference between an intel 8th gen and 9th get? nobody really knows or cares that much. Look up CPU charts for relative compared speeds. The deciding factor anyway will be how much money you have for it. If you are unsure, get yourself an IT guy who can help with the specific hardware questions. Artists don't need to be IT guys :D

If you are doing just basic stuff or are just getting into it then 16gb can be fine, but if you are animating characters and making more high poly stuff then 32gb is optimal and then if you are doing physics with particles and other stuff like that and animating high poly objects then 64gb would be the best choice

While it is the most utilitarian of the PC components, a good or bad one will determine the flow of electricity to the rest of bits, resulting in how well your PC lasts for years to come. This is not to say buy the most expensive, but do please research the manufactor, figure out the needed wattage from one of the many online wattage calculators, and seek out the gold seal ratings.

    A 3 button mouse might be a bit too basic for Blender. Your best bet is to get something like a MOBA mouse with several buttons on the side. MIne has five side buttons and the scroll wheel functions as three since side clicks are recognized separately. Just having access to stuff like the undo function or add menu with a button press has done wonders for my blender efficiency.

    So I do like Mac, and I have a pretty beefed up iMac that works well for Blender. However, I plan on getting a PC somewhere down the road when I get into some more beefy animation and video work using Blender. I actually wouldn't have a preference between the two computers but for two things: I like the Mac UI better, and PCs are much more prone to virus attacks. Perhaps I'll just keep the PC "off the grid" and only use if for video/animated work.

    Which laptop should I buy for my requirements if I want an all-rounder laptop where i will be able to explore all parts of development (Android , software, AI, ML), Cybersecurity. Also 3d modeling software like Blender. I've never done gaming before but can consider it. Please recommend a few laptops under or about INR 70K.

I’m soon to upgrade to the new M1x Mac Mini when it comes out this month or next. I expect even faster and better performance but suffice it to say, Macs work great with blender. Personally I think his comment is actually quite unprofessional. He could have at the very least say a Mac is going g to have some limitations when compared to a PC so I can only assume he is anti Mac. I assume that you keep you laptop plugged in constantly and the cpu very hot since you are rendering, I`m doing the same thing but is not a good thing for long term since battery life is decreased drastically (it will last 2-3 hours when is charged 100%), but is not that bad since you can work on it but you need to keep it plugged in, cpu will run hotter and hotter because the thermal paste will lose the conductivity, but is not a problem because it will last a long time(2+ years) and replacing it is easy

    • @JansifyArt
      @JansifyArt 2 роки тому

      @hjf4a2 Thats not really true, it just depends on what your goal is, sure if you're trying to make hyperrealistic art then Cycles will do the job better and easier for you but if you try to make game assets eevee will actually look much closer to what you can expect in a game and your render will be MUCH faster.
      Not to mention eevee is still often used simply because creators have very short deadlines and cycles requires a ton of time (couple that with the fact he already needs a long time for eevee renders i would never recommend cycles)

    I’m an architect and mac user since forever, and that’s what I had thought. Mac are not on point for 3D, they’re fine computer for music, photos, video editing, but when it comes to 3D and animation they don’t have the gpu needed, even the strongest apple device now (mac studio) is not on point for that. I’m definitely gonna invest into a pc for my 3d models. Now I realise that with apple, I’ve bought a weak computer the same price of a strong powerful one.

      It looks like a decent config based on the stats, but that's not really a budget laptop (unless you configure the good parts out of it :D) Gaming laptops are usually good enough for 3D modelling. My personal preference is not Acer though, but that doesn't mean it's bad, I just saw a lot of low budget aces on my operating table over the years :D I have a Lenovo Legion, you might check those too before making a decision.
      Also have good long look at whether or not you actually need a laptop. Just to keep it plugged on a desk, you don't need a laptop. The only reason might be that it's pre-assembled, so you don't need to worry about parts incompatibility or mismatched hardware. but then again, laptop is for when you know you'll need to move a lot. And I don't mean move to the bed :D. If you use a laptop with a dedicated VGA to work out 3D content, modelling, rendering, 3D games, you need to consider the heat. My Lenovo can get incredibly hot after a few hours of No Man's Sky or Conan Exiles. so I suspect, if you render a lot, you will feel the heat on your lap with a laptop.

      @@onlyusemepain6372 If you don't know anything about desktops and laptops, then probably the best is to get an IT guy to help you decide. If you don't know any available, a powerful gaming laptop is not a bad choice for 3D, and then you have all the components already built in and compatible. You can upgrade a laptop as well as you normally would a PC, maybe not the CPU and VGA, but storage and memory, so if you choose one you can afford now, you can add more years to it with a later memory and SSD upgrade.
      If you see a good pre-built PC, that can also be an option, but I'd surely ask an IT guy there to check if the components are OK. pre-built PCs tend to cut corners in a few places..
      You don't need to overthink it though. I have a friend who wanted to buy a new pc for several years, I build him a list 3-4 times, suggested shops and hardware etc, he just never really get to it ever, and eventually bought something on his own without my guidance.. If you need a machine, then just clear out how much you have for it and get one for that. Small variations can be in the config, but if you tell at the shop you need it for 3D animations and modelling they can probably come up with something. The point is you cannot keep putting it aside because you don't have all the right parts. Buying a machine can be as easy and as hard as you want to make it :-)
