Dawn, I wish you would do a video on how to clean up as you go while cooking. I think a lot of messy people don't understand this concept, and that's why they end up with stacks of dirty dishes everywhere. When I'm cooking, I rinse off each bowl, utensil, etc., immediately after I'm finished using it and put it straight into the dishwasher. This way the food doesn't have a chance to harden and I don't have to "pre-wash" it before I run the dishwasher. Of course, I always start the day with an empty dishwasher, which makes this possible.

I think it’s alright to purchase certain fun kitchen items with the plan that you’ll only use it for a year and then donate it. Many do that with clothing and shoes, but not so much with kitchen items. I’m getting a fun popcorn popper for the kids that’s totally unnecessary but I’m pretty sure the excitement of it will only last for a year. 😆

One of the harder things was getting rid of the decor on the kitchen. I also didn’t think the toaster would fit in my very limited space. But I took the dive, and although it took a couple of weeks to adjust to the empty corners, I LOVE it now and there’s no turning back! It spurred on a whole new decluttering mode and I’m pushing myself to eliminate more inventory as the freedom in my life increases bc of it. Now I’m on disability too, and even with my physical limitations, it takes no time at all to tidy and clean. My apartment also doesn’t need to be cleaned as often, I only need to do 1 load of laundry/week, and so I’m saving lots of $ too! I’m obsessed with your advice, videos, personality, and all your family. What a godsend you are! 😅❤❤❤❤

I feel the same way. I have a pain issue and I have really noticed that my life is easier if I declutter. I have fewer shelves and fewer things sitting around. If I have a rough day, I can just do the basics, like dishes, pet care, and clean bathrooms, and the house looks great. It stays tidy and looks better, even if someone comes by. And getting rid of stuff I do not use makes space for me to put things I do use away. We have a little storeroom in the basement and we cleaned it out and painted and organized it. Now I have a place to put things that I only want to get out occasionally, like during the holidays. This makes my everyday life easier.

Here’s what my three teenage boys do when I reduce the inventory. I narrowed it down to one bowl, one plate, one cup per person in the house so when they’re all sitting in the sink or hiding all over the place around the house or in cars rotting, they then use mixing bowls for cereal then they use cookie sheets for plates. Lol😅 so now I’m down to one cookie sheet one mixing bowl and I’m looking around to see what else they could possibly use to avoid having to wash or put something into the dishwasher. I swear they are delinquents. I’m waiting for them to start using the dog bowls.😅

I’m sure that I haven’t rotated the corner shelves since pre-2020! I also have a large bottom drawer with dry goods that I basically ‘shop for the top’. I need to declutter both of those spaces. I must say that I HAVE been weeding out spices that are expired and reducing the number of different seasonings that I use. Seriously! Exactly how many different versions of Mrs Dash does one person need! 😂🤣😂

We have a dishwasher, but I use it as a drying rack. I prefer to do them by hand, because half our dishes are not dishwasher safe, or the plastic Tupperware gets food cooked in and doesn't come out. So if I have to do half the stuff by hand, I may as well do them all! I do run the dishwasher on occasion so that gaskets and such don't dry out. I've ruined a dishwasher before, from not running it often enough.

The only time they’re really in a mess these days is when I’ve been shopping. I unload all the stuff from my trolley onto the worktop & put it away a few hours later. I’m going to start working on this tho & start putting it away straight away.

As always, Dawn, your comments resonates so much with me. I'm that messy person naturally. And I always thought it was a character defect in me that I could not be more disciplined in the daily routines particularly the kitchen. It sounds dramatic but finding you and your message has changed my mental health tremendously. I really needed the permission to do things different. Thank you for giving of your time and for this awesome ministry You have to help Moms and women everywhere.

I just did a major declutter with my dad in his kitchen (he asked for help, and that was such an honor!). It has been such a game-changer-no more struggling to reach the coffee mugs, no more toppling food storage containers, no more wiping just the visible corners of the countertops. I hope everyone gets to experience that! P.S. Love the new haircut *and* the cute earrings!

Very cute hair! It is both inspiring and relaxing watching how quickly you are able to restore order. Making every item have an actual spot where it belongs is such an important concept. I am still figuring this out with legal/financial/health records, but have made big progress with household items. Today I finally parted with an expensive, broken statue I have intended to repair for 15 years. I feel relief. Thank you for voicing permission to part with things that cause clutter and stress! Somehow it just didn't occur to me as an option.

Similar story here. I dropped an already broken item I had been storing with the intention of repairing. It shattered around my feet and I was both horrified and delighted it was finally gone from my life. I don't keep broken items anymore.

Thanks for this timely video, Dawn. 🙂 I have waffled about the removal of several small appliances and baking paraphernalia since my husband and I started the carnivore diet a few months ago. Not using the rice cooker, bread maker/pans, casserole dishes, pasta pot, and on and on. There is room in the basement so that's where it all can go for now. Cabinets will be almost empty, but I love that!
Merry Christmas and blessings to you and all the family!

I did the opposite, lol. I am a vegan. But I cannot get rid of lots of things cause my husband cooks meat and barbecues. He likes to bake, too. But luckily I can keep extra things in my laundry room cabinets.

I've become really interested in this! I love carbs but I know I don't feel fabulous after consuming them. I'm struggling to know how to replace 3 meals a day for 7 days with only meat. I think I could be satisfied by the protein content, but the lack of variety is a big stall factor. I love crunchy stuff, nuts, veg, chips 🫣 How do you eat for a week if you don't mind me asking?

    • @wendyg.97
      @wendyg.97 5 місяців тому +1

@@JenOooo I don't mind at all. 🙂 We eat very similar things almost every day. Breakfast is turkey bacon (we don't eat pork) and eggs cooked in butter, in an amount dependent on how hungry we are at the time. If hungry at lunchtime, it's often more like a snack- a hunk of cheese, maybe some beef jerky, or I sometimes just have a can of tuna with mayo and salt or a bowl of cottage cheese. Supper is usually beef: steak or hamburger patties, or a large chicken breast. I cook mine in butter and my husband uses the air fryer.
My husband eats stricter carnivore than I do and he still finds the meat-centric menu extremely satisfying.
I am slightly more lenient and do not deny myself the occasional cookie or apple etc. I thought I'd be bored of meat by now, but I'm not. Plus, grocery shopping is greatly simplified - bonus for me.

I woke up one day several decades ago and picked up an old book which I’ve now decluttered but what I remember from it was a concept I expounded on back when I was managing several Flylady based yahoo groups. The concept was really simple based on the early. 1800s setting of the novel. That is the definition and distinction between a pantry and a food storage area. A pantry was a place to store pans. Cookware. Roasters. The larder was where canned foods and root veggies were kept. With this firmly in mind I avoided the hideous knock together style of lopsided particale board and instead built nice deep storage specifically designed to accommodate big kettles and roasters and baking pans. I sorted it by use. Two shelves for baking. All metal sheet pans cookie sheets etc. the upper section I had a single shelf for infrequently used glass bakeware and casserole dishes. Near the bottom off season appliances. At that point every bit of cookware was out of the kitchen in a well organized and logically arranged setting with no stacking. Either on end or side by side. That freed the shallow builder “pantry” in my kitchen. There I keep uncooked food. Real food like potatoes onions garlic sweet potatoes. Home or store bought canned tomatoes. Pasta and rice in tall labeled containers. No cookware. Just food. There are now three appliances on my counter. My 6 qt kitchen aid mixer which I cannot lift. A Breville toaster oven used daily and an espresso machine. I’ll admit my cookware storage looks like a high end department store display. But it’s set up to never have to hunt in hands and knees. And I made a permanent baking day during lockdown and I’ve stuck with it. So every Friday I start my bread dough and I bake on Saturday. I double or triple recipes and freeze. I always have something on hand for a shut in or new mom. And all it took was that old book to make me see that organized kitchens do not need everything right at hand. My stuff is in a former laundry room walk through converted to a kitchen annex. Pantry on one side second fridge and dry goods on the other in a 5x8 space. Not every body has a space like this but it was the seeing the space as a solution to an ever increasing jenga avalanche to keep my baking hobby and my sanity. I put my grandma pretty items on floating shelves and I did ruthlessly declutter them. Kept only my favorites and donated most so someone else could love them.

I firmly believe that anyone who pushes back on clear counters has never tried it and doesn’t give themselves a chance to develop good habits. Yes I take the coffee maker and toaster down from the cupboard every day and put them back. I work full time, I use them multiple times per day and it’s SO WORTH IT. It’s habit-forming and now I don’t even notice it.

I want to say a huge thank you to you! I’ve been binge watching you this year and you’ve motivated and helped me to de clutter my whole home including my garage and attic (although that still needs work but it’s a start 😂)
I find my home with 6 people and a dog so much calmer and easier to manage now, especially my kitchen which I have been ruthless with de cluttering and I’m so glad I did! I started removing things from my counters and it makes a huge difference. I do still have my toaster, air fryer and slow cooker out but they’re heavy and I have no room in cupboards for them anyway. Thank you so much

I recently made another pass through my kitchen drawers and found two additional sets of cutlery! so i have kept the ones we use every day and then decluttered one set, they were mismatched so I just threw them in the bin, we now have a very pared down company cutlery drawer. Looks so much better. I feel since following you, I can 'see' the inventory now. And it's easier to get rid of the excess now I can objectively and without an emotional connection to literal stuff, and take a step back. Thanks again for helping simplify my home.
