  • You want to know how I did it? This is how I did it, Anton: I never saved anything for the swim back.
    Amazing scene. Brilliant film.

It's so uplifting but there's also an element of profound sadness. Younger Vincent probably became suicidal, which happened to lead to his beating Anton. At his lowest point, he was able to find the strength to sustain him in adulthood.

The musical score was amongst the most amazing I've ever heard... Brings a rush of emotions to the heart and soul.. Love it..

"I never saved anything for the swim back."
OK, but clearly neither did Anton if he needed to be saved both times.

That could be true as well given that Anton had to be saved by Vincent in both instances. Perhaps the “superior” genetics still couldn’t account for the physical training Vincent had put in, in addition to the sheer willpower of course.

Good genetics means nothing if you dont physically train for the task

the swim is only a mettaphore. What it really means is he set on a path and never looked back or let himself be destracted. When there is no way back the only way is forward. Where as a Valid like Anton who was geneticly supperior never reached his potential because he was worried about things that were holding him back.

For some reason, I just got so overwhelmed with emotion when I first saw this scene. I started tearing-up, and I may or may not have cried a single solitary tear.
It's such an unexplainable but profoundly moving mixture of music, imagery, and pathos!

This is a philosophical masterpiece. It's about breaking the mold, about exceeding the limitations put on you by society. It's also very European; that is it delves deep into the individual potential of all of us, which the Age of Enlightenment in 1700's Europe allowed. The music, the clothes, the characters and the atmosphere is very European.
    Reach for the stars.

Not just by society, by biology as well. Vincent did have a weak heart after all

It is now 25 years since i first saw the movie and this just occurred to me; Jerome was the swimmer who failed and Vincent was the swimmer who won.
Took me a while to work that one out. lol 😉

This movie is about giving life everything you got, for me. Going 100% and never pitying yourself or making excuses. I also identify deeply with the main character.

we saw this movie in my psych class today and i loved it. this scene was ahmazing. just goes to show that that is what humanity is. the shear will power to do what everyone says you can not. he put blood sweat and tears of hard work into beating his brother at something that just came easy to him cuz he was desgined that way. but that is the essence of being human, to work for what you want. love the theme of this movie.

Great scene! Thanks for publishing this. I love everything what's happening on the screen: the acting of the two brothers, the music by M. Nyman.
I particularly enjoy the moment Vincent saves his brother from drowning and guides himself to the shore by looking at the position of the stars. Absolutely unforgettable, magic, awe-inspiring!

when you are told from a young age how great you are you don't really strive for perfection. however when you are told everyday about how useless and crap you are, you build up an innate drive to prove and better yourself beyond measure.

    @gothatway09 No prob.
He meant exactly that. Vincent is sincere in his passion to beat his younger brother, hence why he refers to the "other side". He saves nothing for the trip back so when he does return he literally has zero energy remaining.
Our crew gives 150% percent every practice and regatta so that during our trip back, when we're sore, tired, and sloppy, we barely make it back to the dock.
You can see this the first time Vincent beats his brother, they barely make it back to shore.

I grew up working with my hands. Helping pay for my brother's tuitions. One of them became a success and looked down on me all the time. Meanwhile I ended up on the streets, homeless, eating trash. Like a dog without a home. I'd steal rice by putting them in my pockets when I pass shops selling em. Worked the lowliest jobs. Got beaten a lot. Gun to my head. I never begged for my life. Years later I applied to a call center. Noone would talk to me because of how I dressed. I was rough on the edges. Wasn't graceful in educated groups. But I aced all the exams, being poor and uneducated I read everything I can get my hands on from trash. From refrigerator manuals to torn up engineering and pocketbooks. I faked my way into jobs. Always afraid they would find out my papers were fake. I tried so hard not to be found out I excelled in every job. In fifteen years I only ever misspelled one word. Now I have enough experience to not need those papers. I have houses and businesses. A pretty japanese wife with mistresses even. But still some people would look down on me. But they can never do what I do. Created new technologies only I can use. Wrote papers that got me cushy jobs. Life is not a matter of abilities but a contest of will. And those women who saw me as beneath them now ask for my attention. But how can I love such trash. No, not anymore.

Thanks for posting this scene from one of my favorite movies. Indeed, amazing scene, great acting, fabulous music by Michael Nyman. Why aren't more of these films made? I love how Anton saves his brother from drowning and then he swims to the shore getting oriented by looking at the stars. Awesome, awesome, perfection!
