Those Jags teams of the late '90s were STACKED. Brunell at QB, the "Lightning and Thunder" WR duo of Smith and McCardell, Fred Taylor and James Stewart at RB, Boselli anchoring the O-line, and a dominant defense with Brackens, Lake, and Darius, not to mention Reggie Barlow returning kicks. It's a shame they never won a Super Bowl.
Which ironically is why the NFL made it disproportionately harder on Cleveland and Houston to win as expansion teams. The league allowed both Carolina and Jacksonville to get a lot of quality players in their expansion drafts which helped them both become competitive really quickly, both making the conference title game in their 2nd year. I think a lot of the other teams bristled at this and like I said, it got held against Cleveland especially and Houston three years later.
The duo of Keenan McCardell and Jimmy Smith was as good as it gets for Jacksonville. The Jaguars haven't had a duo like that at Wide Receiver since then.
@@ericsigersmith6067 The truth is McCardell was more so a coach just preparing the younger receivers to take over while he was still an active player when he was with the Chargers in San Diego.

Week 6 of the 1998 NFL season was the battle of Florida between the Miami Dolphins and the Jacksonville Jaguars (which was regionally televised by CBS on October 11, 1998).
Those late 90's Jaguars had some GOOD teams. Also, I think Fred Taylor just might be the most underrated RB in NFL history. It' is an absolute crime that he only made 1 pro bowl in his career, and that was late in his career. Yet he had 7 seasons where he rushed for no less than 1100 yards.
Very good teams. Coughlin did a fantastic job building that roster...after the '96 AFC title game appearance, to continue retooling to get back to the postseason three straight times and advance a little bit more each year ('97 Wild Card, '98 divisional, '99 AFC title game)...I figured for sure they were set up for success in to the 2000's. But attrition got them and it didn't help that Baltimore, Tennessee and Pittsburgh were all in the same division in 2000 and 2001. JFC...bloodbaths.

I think the '99 team had a shot if they had played a tougher schedule. They went 14-2 against one of the weakest schedules in NFL history. If they'd played some better teams they might not have had as good a record but they'd have been more battle-tested for the games against Tennessee.

The Comeback was in the 90s… so was SB 25 aka the “Wide Right” game… SB 32 with Elway winning his first… SB 34 one yard short to end the ‘99 season… this game was good but there were multiple games throughout the decade that were better.
You were off by a year. It happened the next year in the 1999 AFC Divisional Round (Jan. 15, 2000) on a Saturday and I'm still in shock of how it ended and its been 20 years since and counting. That was also the final game that Jimmie Johnson would be Coaching as he retired.
These late 90s Dolphins teams were loaded with talent on both sides of the ball. Honestly what kept them down was probably Jimmy Johnson. He handcuffed Marino. Was too conservative on offense. At the same time he drafted and built those amazing defenses of this era.
I lived in Jacksonville at the time, and I remember it was the first Monday night football game the Jaguars played. my girlfriend bought me a pair of tickets, and me and my buddy went to see the game. I remember calling out the game winning Keenan McCardell "touchdown!!!" before he caught the ball. We were about halfway up, on the same side of the field, about the 40-yard line. I even stood up and raised my arms in the touchdown signal when I yelled. 😃 the great thing is, I actually had my eye on Keenan from the beginning of the play, since he was on our side of the field. I also remember one of the local female reporters referring to them as "The Darlings of Monday night", while interviewing one of the Jaguar players.😄 I had forgotten what a entertaining game it was.
