Good info. I only slipped on the air hose and ropes when I worked on my roof. I don't think that retracting lines are good on steep roofs because it can't keep the tension. Looking for a better solution before I do a steep section of my roof.

Any chance any of these can be used as a self retracting dog line? Unable to have a fence in the yard and am hoping to find a retracting cable solution that covers >20-30 ft. Thanks!

It is a fall arrest device, so I would not recommend for that applicaton. When the dog runs fast enough (ex: something like over 6ft/s) and the lock mecahnism activates. It can lock within 5 ft or 10ft whereever the point the dog moves fast over the set speed of the device.
