Reason is the planet's leading source of news, politics, and culture from a libertarian perspective. Go to reason.com for a point of view you won't get from legacy media and old left-right opinion magazines.
    ---------
News reports often give the impression that human beings have wrecked the earth, the middle class is disappearing, and the world is getting more dangerous.
"We are destroying the planet," Michael Moore says on CNN. MSNBC says that "the middle class is disappearing." The media warn us about things like a "deadly Ebola outbreak."
This negativity comes from the way humans are wired by evolution, says Reason Editor in Chief Katherine Mangu-Ward.
She tells John Stossel: "If you are a caveman who hears a little rustling in the weeds, and you say, 'Oh, it's probably fine,' the other guy who says, 'It's probably a tiger,' that's the guy who lives. That guy was our ancestors."
But our instincts are wrong, she says. We needn't be so scared.
The cover of the August/September 2019 issue of Reason features a glass that's completely full. Inside the magazine, you'll read about how there is less war and more food. And we're healthier, while working safer and more fulfilling jobs.
Mangu-Ward points out that today we have medical breakthroughs that would've once been called miracles. Deaf children receive cochlear implants that allow them to hear for the first time. Artificial limbs "allow the lame to walk."
"These are things that, in another era, would have caused the founding of an entire religion!" says Mangu-Ward.
Stossel pushes back: "What about this constant complaint from the media?…The middle class is shrinking."
"Mostly it's because people are getting richer," Mangu-Ward responds.
She's right. A graph in Reason shows that about 50 years ago, 53 percent of people were middle-income, making between $35,000 and $100,000 per year. Although that statistic has since fallen to 42 percent, the reason is that many people moved into upper-income brackets. The share making more than $100,000 rose from 8 percent to almost 28 percent. (These numbers are inflation-adjusted.)
"Pestilence, War, Famine, and Death are All on the Decline," was the subtitle of another article in the issue.
"You wouldn't know that watching news programs," Stossel said.
"That's right, and yet it's absolutely true," added Mangu-Ward.
Even with the rise in terrorism, she notes, "There are fewer wars and fewer people die in those wars than has ever been true in the past."
Stossel pushes back again: "Lately, life expectancy dropped a bit."
"Overall, that is the tiniest blip," Mangu-Ward replies. The long-term trend is still up.
An article titled "How Work Got Good"argues that people are more fulfilled in modern jobs.
"A couple hundred years ago, work was dangerous," Mangu-Ward adds. "It was very easy to die at work…work was extremely boring, even for people that had good jobs. Jobs are pretty interesting now, and they mostly don't kill you, and we should be grateful for that."
But there are problems, and Reason's editors understand that. The back half of the magazine is filled with the bad news: misery in Venezuela, threats to an open internet, the new popularity of socialism.
"Everything that's bad is politics, everything that's good is the market." Mangu-Ward argues. "Life gets better. We have the opportunity to look to a future where those trends will continue-if we can just manage to keep politicians from screwing it up."
The views expressed in this video are solely those of John Stossel; his independent production company, Stossel Productions; and the people he interviews. The claims and opinions set forth in the video and accompanying text are not necessarily those of Reason.

Amazon made tens of billions in profits last year but was perfectly willing to accept corporate welfare from NYC's Long Island for "HR2" even as they paid zero in corporate income taxes! GE also paid zero in corporate income taxes on billions in profit. I guess if your into that kind of thing then hell yeah, where does one sign up? Is that really the question we should be asking ourselves?
Don't get me wrong, having your own local Billionaires around like highly esteemed social alumni is good and all. Hey here in the the Metro Detroit area we don't yet have a truly usable mass transit system but change is in the offing.
But as long as you're economically mobile enough, you can now take in a Redwings Game or a concert at Dan Gilbert's new LCA (Little Caesars Arena), Lions game at Ford Field, or Tigers game at Comerica Park. Meanwhile, the promised investment in the neighborhood languishes. Facts do matter.

    • @smokert5555

@@MrBrelindm First off, that wasn't corporate welfare, it was a tax break as an incentive to locate there, which AOC nixed, costing hundreds of jobs for no particular reason.
The rest sounded like you're trying to demonize them. And get in a shot at Detroit's politicians while you're at it.

    • @rbwoodwork1890
      @rbwoodwork1890 5 років тому +2

David Brelin I think most of that falls on your local government as it does in most communities. They hope giving those tax breaks will bring jobs, jobs means more local income for the city. They just don’t spend it wisely, most city budgets are way in the red!

    • @MrBrelindm
      @MrBrelindm 5 років тому

@@smokert5555 that's the point! DC doesn't have any kind of exclusive on corruption! And quite frankly, taking unnecessary enticements when they had a stockpile of money is the very definition of corporate welfare!
They're not being benevolent to the society at large, they're a net taker. A drain on needed City resources. And yes, Detroit's got a long and storied history of corruption too. There's questions currently surrounding the Land Bank, and another with Blight Removal. Grifters populate industry and government alike.

Personally, I will NEVER believe both John Stossel and the woman from "Reason" magazine because they exaggerate, with their right-wing propaganda, about life getting better. Especially in the United States. But what I want to know is: How about income inequality, homelessness, poverty, and corruption in just about certain parts of the world as well as America.

    • @pete1853

Food and clothing are cheap, generally speaking. I recently got some plain colored tshirts for $2 each, new. That was clearance, but they were less than $4 even at full price. Jeans at Target are about $20. And then there is second hand if that's more than you want to spend. As to food, many vegetables and fruits are a buck a pound or less. Potatoes are dirt cheap, as is rice, beans, etc. Chicken and pork are often $2 a pound or less. Shelter depends where you want to live. Government has made that expensive in many areas by restricting supply.

Silver in China traded at a ratio with gold of ~10:1, whereas in Britain, it was ~15:1, leading to Britain quickly running out of silver and establishing the gold standard shortly before the Opium Wars.

I'm very skeptical towards their "the market is good philosophy". A completely free market is not something you'd wish... just look at the US. A free market is basically the same as evolution by natural selection where "natural" is now our market environment. The thing about evolution by natural selection is there are a lot of losers and those losers will be the individuals' whos environment/genes didn't teach them to "win". I'm not saying a market is bad but there must be some kind of control. Besides that, it's a great video showing a positive angle to our world.
