I saw Botti and Sanborn in Fresno California a few years ago at a concert at the Saroryan Theater. What an incredible concert. They had the audience just rocking. At the end of the concert both of them including the members of their band were very personalble and down to earth as they spent at least an hour after the concert talking with the audience and shaking hands.
David Sanborn is soo smooth. And his improvistational skills are beyond this world. He has the smooth sound of King Curtis, the fingering agility of Charlie Parker and the sweet raw sound of Stan Getz.
Gorgeous redo of one of the most magical pieces in jazz history. I've listened to Flamenco Sketches on Kind of Blue more times than I can count. That Adderley super low exhaling note at the end of his solo is supernatural.
My wife and I were at this show. It was in Dallas at a wine and spirits convention. We met Cameron Smith after the show. It was a really great show - although nothing beats Sanborn from back in the late 80s in the Straight to the Heart era.
We saw Botti last nite-here, in Toronto @ Massey Hall. The performance was nothing short of awesome. He played this, as well as lots of stuff from Italia.
Hopefully someone will be performing this classic in 100 years from now. It's one of my favorites to play, er I mean hack. They treated this with its due respect, making it their own but staying close to the classic recording. Nice stuff.
These guys are great contemporary players and this video sounds great until you go back and listen to the original on Kind Of Blue. WOW!!was it an incredible performance.
Amazing what Sanborn can do with the horn, Botti tone is perfect however he has stated he cannot play jazz and is not a jazz musician he just plays music. I just love music and I appreciate what these guys bring to the table

You know? Miles Davis is a legend R.I.P dont get me wrong but chris botti kicks his butt, more articulation, dynamics were key and his high notes come out like slick porcealin.
its the same mouthpiece or his "sax works" mouthpiece which is basically very close to a dukoff d8. You can make a dukoff sound smooth if you work at it. The thicker your reed is the more textures you can play. You might like v16 reeds. They are great I think!
VERY NICE......Try Joe Bonamassa for some REAL MUSIC...LOL Tried to share it but there is NOT that option available....But do yourself a favor and check out what might be the greatest guitarist ever...
Perhaps not as good as the original, but still an excellent version of the piece. Chris Botti's playing is definitely influenced by Miles. The opening phrases of Sanborn's solo sound alot like Cannonball. Thanks for posting this.
this is an awesome video, sanborn is awesome. aside from the astoundingly cheesy intro complete with a sleazy goatee this is great. is it just me or does chris botti sound almost exactly like miles davis on kind of blue?

Miles would probably hate Chris Botti, as he did a LOT of trumpeters of his era. However, I think Chris did a fine job with this classic. Although I admit, this had to be a HUGE undertaking, as this is probably one of the few songs that no one has touched from Kind of Blue. He's also covered Milestones & 7 Steps to Heaven; CLEARLY a Miles Davis aficionado! I had a chance to see him live in concert. He puts on a great show. I'd like to hear more original jazz material from him though.
@Omills07 sounds like what an old friend told me about how some people make the music sound too sterile, whereas when Miles was alive, it was something you felt that couldn't be explained....no comparison between to two individuals...but Botti does have a nice sound though...must be the Monet :-P
They both bring their own individualism to the table while paying homage to the tune and the original players. There is nothing wrong with them putting their personality into a song thats almost completely improvised, isnt that a big part of jazz? Good cover of a great tune.
Once you get past that Uber-Cheesy intro, the performance is top-notch, they captured the essence of the song without slavish copying. Miles would've been proud. This is NOT smooth-jazz, this is the real deal on this song.
BTW ... since when playing good music in whichever channel is an "example of the collapse of western civilization"??? If you are a Jazz lover, you should be happy to see it spreading everywhere! Let there be Jazz on Pop channels! I can't believe how people can be so small and pompous!
One more thing: You don't need to be an outcast to be a Jazz artist. There is no contradiction in being popular and being a Jazz artist. You self-entitled Jazz experts seem to love to bash artists that become more popular! Get off your imaginary high horses, read a little, learn a little, maybe study some sociology, maybe try to truly learn music and what music is about.
he studied at indiana...he knows what he's doing, Im not sure how you can question if he is a jazz musician or not: i personally am not a fan of his contemporary jazz, however in THIS setting of classic cool school, he sticks to tradition, and does it quite possibly better than miles himself to some degree. But please dont call it "horrible", it makes me question your intelligence
I'm not trying to detract from miles' genius, but he totally stole Blue in Green and Flamenco Sketches from Bill Evans. Don't get me wrong, I still love him, and the rest of his work was very original. Blue in Green and Flamenco Sketches were totally Evans' compositions, and he just took all the credit.
Chris Botti sounds excellent on this song (you can really hear the Miles Davis influence here, he even plays some of his 'licks). However, NO ONE can play this song like the original....Miles Davis. Just listen to the way Miles phrases his notes. I'm not into David Sanborn's solo as much. He should have kept the 'funk' out of his solo. Although this rendition can't compare to what Miles, Trane, Cannonball and Bill Evans did, it is still very good.
Sanborn is a god. His CD's are craps, but when he plays live with Miles, Clapton, Gillespie, he's the best. I'm sad he's doing so much shit in his records...
i am a bog botti fan but somehow it sounds like sanborn is just way above chris botti's range as far as improv goes. i like the line botti played but after hearing miles play it so much i felt no emotion in his playing. which is a phrase u dont hear often with Botti.

the pianist is Billy Childs. He's been with Botti for quite awhile, along with Billy Kilson on the drums. Truly one heck of a band. Hope this helps!

This MIGHT be the only remake of this song that I know of. I think Chris Botti did it justice. Miles would be pleased.

Yep, Botti wants to play like Miles, but Sanborn plays like Sanborn. That's the main difference. He's really terrific here.
