Asuka was one of the first permanent capitals of Japan in the 5th and 6th centuries and is central to Japanese history as the home of the first emperor and the roots of Buddhism, which came to Japan from China during the Asuka period. Its historical roots go back even further to the Tumulus period, (Kofun Jidai (250-552)), which is characterized by key-shaped burial mounds.
