Because she has no memories of loving him .. so she thought it was for that but later on .. he tells Elena that’s he’s trying to get bonnie back because she sacrificed herself for him and nothing to do with her vouching for him to Elena .
Apparently the writers would have had stelena as endgame if Nina didn’t leave so I’m wondering if they wanted to head down the route of Bamon but knowing them they would have killed Damon off instead of Stefan and left bonnie alone like they did
