It wasn't to make it relevant - it was important as it signified the first country which didn't embrace her with open arms. She was insulted that she wasn't invited to Buckingham Palace, but to a country house - she felt it was the aristocracy looking down on her for being lower-class. It was relevant to her, not to an English audience (which had a queen by the time this was out btw).
In my less than humble opinion Ms LuPone and Mr. Patinkin along with Webber's score and Rice's lyrics too technical perfection spoiled this project for the laissez faire world of film adaptations. The music is HOT, the lyrics are HOT, the performers are on FIRE (you thought I was gonna say hot!). Sadly,when it went to film, the producers gave the whole project an overdose of Valium and well, only "Les Miserables" was worse. 'nuff said.
+Raymond Maurer: agreed about the washed out film version which even deleted the enegry, adult satire/language, but I liked Les Mis except for the miscast and ineffective Ms Hathaway

In this patriarchy society, even today a woman with power is something weird to see .And these was realized in the 70's, in my country was a military coup and the name of Evita and Peron was totally forbidden. so I think Andrw Lloyd weber masterpiece is avant-garde.
@emlodik I said the line "later in the play", as in at the END Rainbow Tour when he name-dropped England, was fine. But the interruption in the MIDDLE of this song (Buenos Aires) was irrelevant. Read more carefully next time. ;p
@emlodik I laughed so hard reading this. I honest to god listened to this musical over 100 times over the past 7 years, but my sister and I have never had a good joke about this song. Now whenever I hear it, I can think, "WHO THE HELL DOES RAZARA565 THINK SHE IS?!?!?!?!" XD
I would love this version of the song so much more if it weren't interrupted by Andrew Lloyd Webber's vain attempt at making a play about Argentina relavent to the English audience. Eva's line later in the play saying, "Who the hell does the King of England think he is?" was fine, but the interruption in this song was completely irrelevant. D:
This worlks only in stage. The Original Concept Album and the Movie Album have this song complete. The first includes a beautiful and melancholic segment.
I prefer Elena Roger's (the new Broadway actress) version of this song. The Argentinian accent and singing helped in emphasizing the song's Spanish flavors.
She had no power in the role (the songs were completely wrong for her vocal range). And when your show is all about how much power she exuded, that's a problem.
