The one where they call everything “Mexican music” is sooo accurate 😂😂
@@pascualvalle7120 What's the difference? Here in Texas the music sounds carnival.
It was absolutely discouraging when someone told me "you're trying to hard. You're not Spanish" when I tried to speak Spanish at work. Whats so discouraging is that I am actually part Hispanic and I take pride in learning more about that side of me but ppl are so negative.
i swear Americans are so weird when it comes a to learning a different language. They act like if you are not from that certain country then yiu have no business speaking that language 🙄
Give them a tiny bit of sarcasm. "thanks for the encouragement". Theyll fall in line. Just avoid those stubborn ones
This exactly how I feel as a black man learning for about a year , everything you’ve stated is true. I needed this🙏
When he said "stop trying to be Mexican" ...I felt that. We're not trying to be anything we're not. We just want to learn another language and culture. Thank you👏🏻
I’ve been learning Spanish on my own for almost a year. I can relate to everything in this video. My family be like “boy you know you black right?” But they always want me to translate 😂😂😂
Imagine their faces when they realize a bunch of Latinos are black 😂😂🙇🏾♀️🙇🏾♀️
@@jaminwaite3867 it really is just like the US that associates skin color with language and I feel like we need to better educate our fellow citizens on this matter, honestly.
@@RingsOfSolace Yea, people need to stop learning things off the street and need to start paying attention in school. 99% of people in the U.S don't know the difference between race and ethnicity.
Since I started learning Spanish I’ve been so obsessed with the culture
Girl same omg I wanna marry a latino so I can become even more engraved in the culture😂
“I don’t know whats your obsession with Spanish” but then they need me to come translate 😭
I’m Mexican and I gotta say that don’t worry where you are from, don’t worry if you are black or white, gay, trans, hetero, etc. You can learn whatever you want and go wherever you want.
It’s stupid just think that you have to survive in the place you where born.
✨LIVE YOUR LIFE✨
Man the number of times family has either said “you wanna learn Spanish because you wanna be Mexican” or “oh you trying to get you a little Mexican girlfriend huh, not into black girls”. And you can tell them over and over I like the music and I wanna learn something new. It took a while and lots of schooling but they accepted it.
Spanish speaker in here! Don't ever get discouraged by people, we do appreciate the effort 🙌✨
Thank you. I have found that Spanish speakers in large cities tend to be lesstolerant of Spanish learners. In the more rural locations, it has been my experience that me learning Spanish has been better received, even encouraged. Every time I have been treated rudely for speaking Spanish, it was in a big city such as Houston or Austin.
"Who you yelling at? I will come cha cha my way to your room right now boy" that part took me out lmaooo 😭
This is so true! Learning Spanish came natural to me tbh. When I started learning Spanish my family joked a lot about me wanting to be Mexican. Then I started ordering my food in Spanish and they got used to it. I moved to Florida and they came to visit me at work. Majority of my clients were Spanish and my fam was in awe to see me communicate with people in Spanish as if it was my native tongue! Never let anyone deter you from your goals! Soy un afroamericano que puede hablar escribir y leer español. No soy correcto 100% del tiempo pero me sigo aprendiendo todos los días.
Wait! I'm learning spanish right now and I think that I can translate what you said! You said " I'm African American and I can speak, write, and read spanish. I'm not correct all of the time, but I'm improving everyday". Was I correct?
@@bigtaskat-hand4742 NICE!!! To give you more insight. when I used the phrase “ me sigo aprendiendo todos los días” the direct translation would be “I continue learning everyday”.
Same exact thing happened to me. Then you have the family members who see your progress and say they want to learn but never start. Good video man
"I just hope this is a phase cuz he need to know that he black" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Much love Capt!
Lmao yes and the “cut that Mexican music off” is a classic. Anything Spanish is automatically considered Mexican.
“Cut that out, you know i don’t speak that ” my mom 😭🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
im hiding it from my family so one day i just pop out speaking it ahahah
When I wanted to learn English my mom's denial got to toxic levels when she started saying that I wouldn't use it, or that I would forget it. Until she finally convinced my dad to stop paying for the courses and get me out of there.
Luckily for me, I had the basics already, and I had the internet to learn on my own. I also learned how to teach myself a variety of skills, and now I am learning other languages as well.

“I will come cha cha to your room right now boy”😂
When I play reggaetón in the car, my sisters like it but after like three songs they get tired of it cause it all sounds the same 😂😂🤦🏾♀️
Omg same with me I try to play a few songs then after that I will change the station😂 she is more accepting of it than my mom tho, my mom thinks I’m trynna be sum I’m not when I just want to grow as a person and step out of my comfort zone. ¡Me encanta español!😌🥺
I never thought about this much, but now seeing your video makes me realize that a lot of that did happen to me with my parents and friends. Parents started with telling me Im wasting my time, then my Dad caught me watching novelas in my room with a notepad (writing vocabulary I didn't know yet) and he was not happy. A friend told me, "Learn from me, dont commit the same mistakes as me. I went thru this whole phase youre going thru, I thought I wanted to be Mexican too, but trust me, you're NOT Mexican and this is just a phase, you should just be who you are." Well, 16+ years later, I never expected this but now Ive been married for 12 years to my husband who's from Mexico and speaks only Spanish (he's had a chronic illness so we've focused on survival instead of being free to focus on him learning English with me). 95% of my daily life is in Spanish. I think in my head in Spanish, thinking out how Im going to say such and such to so and so, and then realize "Oops, wait, I don't need to be planning in Spanish to be talking to my dad today." 😅 Fun video, thanks!
Lmaooooo the first few seconds is pure facts. Black families, honestly. My family is black.
My family is also black and my mom actually wanted me to learn another language
@@kevyonphillips-ellis8675 My family is happy that I'm interested in other languages and not drugs 😂
I’m more in the acceptance category👍🏾!! When I told my family I was learning Spanish (Its been 4months now) they were happy I was being diverse and would care that I blast Spanish music EVERYDAY!!!😭😭😭 Even my grandma supports me by texting me only in Spanish.
My family racist so I already know what's going in my granma head. My mom at first was like "Why are you learning Spanish? Are Mexicans talking shit to u at work?" Then my brother made fun of me. Even I had doubts continuing Spanish bcuz I just had bad experiences with certain Spanish speakers but I try to keep an open mind and understand that not all of them act in a certain way. I had to remind myself why Im learning this and it's cuz I have a goal of learning different languges. It's almost a year now and sometimes I catch my aunt even jamming Spanish music and my mom asking me why I "stopped" when i take a mentalbreaks. Im filipino btw.
Do what you want. Learn what you want to learn. Life is too short to be trying to please other people! Get and love your life!!
I felt this 😭because (I have a couple light patches on my face I don’t know why . I just do) My nephew dead ass looked me in the eye and told me “the reason why you have the light patches is because you keep thinking that you’re different races so your skin is getting confuse”. All I wanted is be a polyglot and learn about different cultures 🥺 I’m black and I know I am (and proud of it) I just want to be a multilingual black person is that so hard to understand 😭😭🤷🏽♀️

I'm the only teacher that speaks some Spanish, other than the Spanish teacher. Made fun of me when I was learning, now we have students that don't speak any English now they need me to speak to the student and his parents.
" I just hope this is a phrase because he need to know he's black" that got me dying lol
"Kiki you are not Puerto Rican. You black". Random jibberish with "taco" and "sombrero" thrown in there. Then it's the rolls eyes "You like that culture stuff" Sarcastically "You are so cultured". It's all good though.
It's funny because growing up I was really into japanese because of anime, but around 18 I switched to Spanish because I realized it would be way more practical, I use it in my job as a pharmacy tech, my family never really ragged on me about it, they always saw it as useful growing up in california and now living Texas
I’m learning Spanish because I like it and my parents always tell my “what do want from this language you will not get any benefit from it you better work on your English”
My family and friends say *your just learning so you can flirt with Spanish girls* 😂 doesn’t acknowledge the fact that I just like the language I want to interact with a different culture. Viajar algún día y leer memes en español
Yooooo... here’s my experience
Mi y mi esposa fuimos to el restaurante con las primas. Soon as we started speaking Spanish we could feel the hate. The “I have Spanish in me, pero no habla.” The staff were vibing with me and my wife but gave my cousins the 🥶 shoulder.
All that being said. We still haven’t given up and now COVID gave us the time to practicar juntos.
Oh God, I can relate!! Sometimes my mom finds a regatón song on the radio and say, “there’s your music, Tiffany. What are they saying?” Another thing she does is she’ll call me and ask how to say something. My whole family thinks I’m also a hit on Christmas. “Oooh, she can speak that Spanish.” 😂🤦🏽♀️
I think they just feel proud of you ☺️, it happens to me with English
Btw, I'm mexican and I can't understand reggaeton lyrics because of the accent, can you? 😅😂
@@RedTrooper22 I think you’re right, 😂 and I can understand a little, but not enough to understand what the song is about. 😂

When I tell you this is soooo true!! I love it. I'm still in the first phase. One thing that annoys me is anytime they hear someone speaking Spanish they say "WHAT ARE THE SAYING SINCE YOU KNOW SPANISH?" like mf I don't know!!!
lool that's me learning english, they always want me to translate songs, but man, they sing so fast!
My mom always jokes about the time Bush Jr. said, “I don’t speak Mexican.” 🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🇲🇽🇲🇽
He was the President, but apparently the only degree he obtained was the degree of ignorance.
@ when I was in Trinidad there was a guy that worked for my uncle that everyone nicknamed Spanish. Dude spoke no Spanish, he just looked Latin American so everyone called him Spanish.
“Cut that out you know I don’t speak that!” 😂😂
It's the "IDK now you need me" for me!😂😂
But my country azz cousin was glad I was able to help this Mexican guy buy stuff in his corner store! Ha!
Lol I had a similar experience to this when I was learning Arabic
I got this from my family and I'm actually half Panamanian! They be like "You're BLACK"😑😑😑
My mom always thought it was stupid for me to learn Spanish because "everyone around here speaks English". Good thing I stuck with it, because lo and behold, there are people who speak Spanish as well.
It’s strange how some people in the United States will get so annoyed hearing a different language or finding out you want to learn a different language. I plan to try to become more consistent with learning languages and plan to teach my daughter and nephew Spanish.
I feel self conscious when trying to learn Spanish around family. They get confused and unsure why I would even want to learn it. Thankful for the Internet at least I can find others who can relate or find people to learn with.
I totally agree with your comment! Why does our society tech our children to be so
Closed minded? We should begin 2nd language education at kindergarten. Why not open their minds to other cultures and possibilities?
Don't know why they think that. I took Spanish in high school because foreign language was required.
My family is just the opposite they are happy that I’m learning Spanish. When I go to their house and watch Telemundo my dad ask “Are you learning anything?” Or he will ask “what are they saying?” And I try my best to explain what I know. 😁😁
“Who you yellin at” lmaoo
Especially being black and having gone through this when I started learning spanish 11 years ago this video was spot on LOL but not just family a lot of peers too
literally my life story bro😭 when i started learning papiamentu(Portuguese/spanish creole language) , the language of curaçao where my dad is from. But my moms side is black american and the journey was rough for sure but now it’s all love and they encourage me. dont stop because my mother tongue is khoe khoe and they like well mama dead so who you gonna talk to now? how about UMMMMM 300,000 people in Namibia with lessons???
This is so true I used to be so ashamed of there behavior it was so annoying they used to say to people “she thinks she puertorriqueño or turn that mess off when I listen to Spanish music but now I understand it was just a lack of understanding and it’s been ten years since then and they actually tell people and are proud that I speak Spanish !!
I definitely hadn't had anyone 'reject' my learning Spanish, but there's definitely been doubting that I could actually do it (albeit expressed in a round about vague British way)
Vivo muy lejos de mi familia ahora así que cuando empecé a estudiar español no me pudieron molestar pero cuando estuve aprendiendo chino mis amigos siempre me dijeron "que haces, intentas ser asiático?"
I'll be honest. I don't think I'm at the necessity part... And I think my family accepts it... but it still feels very tense when I speak it around them. And not Spanish, but Japanese too. So most of the time when I'm doing exchanges I just go to another room. I've accepted that certain members of my family are simply just intolerant of other people. That's not gonna stop be from pursuing fluency though.
This was hilarious! 😆😆 Funny how people be cracking on you till they need you. 😂
I get treated like this to, they just be mad because they wish they had the patience and persistence to do the same. This was funny 😄
Here in California there a lot of folks of Mexican ancestry that do not speak Spanish. My grandparents generation didn't teach their children Spanish in hopes they wouldn't be discriminated against. My grandparents tell stories of being disciplined in school for speaking or translating Spanish. Learning Spanish is still on my bucket list. Speaking a second language can give you an advantage in a job over someone who only speaks one language. Enjoyed the video!
Happened to me the same way not the Spanish part cuz my family is Hispanic and I speak Spanish myself but I was learning Italian, Portuguese and French my friends made fun of me but I learned to live with it and I laugh I even joke about it myself so I make myself laugh. Your videos are awesome
My mom doesn't like my Spanish music whenever I listen to it in the car or whenever she's around. I have a few cousins who speak Spanish though and I'm encouraged to keep learning. And I can help the kids with translations when they are learning Spanish
Lmfao the “he need to know that he black” took me out ! This is my second time viewing the video and it still has me weak.
"Oh... Y'all just talked so much crap throughout the years I just learned to cut y'all off aha!" Never related more 😂😂
Hahahahaha that voicemail just took me out! 😂😂😂😂
Your family definitely are not Californians. I told my family I’m learning Spanish, and they said good, I’ll call when I need you😂
i’m so grateful because my dads supportive of it. he’ll make them offhand comments like “you remember you black, right?” as jokes, but other than that, he’s been pushing me to learn even more languages after spanish 😭. i probably will, though, i wanna learn french, italian, and russian if my brain can fit all that. i’m a teen, so this is the best time to learn languages and retain them
I definitely experienced at least two of these 😂😂 My friends/family always asking me to translate words lol
This is great! So fun to watch your acting talent! I'm learning Spanish and, yeah, I've got a lot to learn!
I love this channel, everyone is so inspiring. Makes me want to do more. I love reading the comments with how committed everyone is. 🥰🥰
I was introduced to the culture when I was younger. I fell in love with how the had the close family thing. I moved with the family for 2 years, I became family. My comprehension of the language went threw the roof
Me : Learning Spanish for 3 years still taking spanish lessons. My Family: Why are you taking lessons? Don't you already know spanish??
obviously none of them have tried to learn a language or they would realize it's a journey
This happened to me alot when I started taking spanish seriously. Most of my trouble came at school. My story is a bit weird in that biologically I am mixed. My grandfather on my mom’s side was dominican, but I only met him when I was a baby after that, not at all. I found out more about him while in high school when I started taking it seriously so I had even more motivation. People in my Pre Ap Spanish 3 class always made fun of me 😂😂 especially some of the mexicans(prolly just jealous but it’s all love) I was the best student in both Spanish 3 and AP Spanish 4 and always got called a tryhard (but they were asking me for help on their homework🤦🏽♂️) As far as at home, definitely had some of the same things.
When i was first getting into spanish it was most definitely the first few stages with my family as well as people i went to middle school and high school with. There were times I felt discouraged because it felt like you were not "black enough" or that you were" trying too hard to be hispanic" when in actuality I wanted to go beyond textbook spanish and actually experience the different cultures and how different spanish speakers live outside of what is shown in media. After a while when they see you know so much and can order things and communicate in spanish , then you are "cultured" and finally they start listening to some of the music you listen to and try the foods from other spanish speaking countries that you like to try.
I actually started learning Spanish because my parents would speak it around me as a kid as a type of code, and it would frustrate me that I couldn’t understand them. It’s mainly my extended family that acts some type of way about us speaking Spanish, but we just talk about them (or pretend to talk about them) in Spanish immediately afterward. 🤣🤣🤣
I just came over from your UA-cam story and THIS IS SO FUNNY. I thought I was alone with having such a close minded/negative family. Thanks for making this! I needed it!
Sí! Thank you for your channel and videos. I learned Spanish as a teenager bc my best friend is Colombian and i used to hang out at her house where her grandmother didn't speak English. When i started learning Spanish I got some push back from my family also. They would say stuff like, You are not our child, I think someone switched babies with us at the hospital (like a baby knows the parents' language at birth!) They also thought my Colombian music was strange. Then......years later they were proud of me. One of my cousins, my favorite cousin worked 6 hours away in a hospital in Georgia, She called me on 2 different occasions bc she had patients who spoke only Spanish and she wanted me to tell them what the doctor was saying. it was unreal! Thanks again for your channel! You are lo mejor!
All of that is so true! I get nervous now listening to music in Spanish or Netflix shows because I’m afraid of ridicule. It’s been holding back my progress, so thanks for this video! I’m black to, ‘see picture’ lol and my family doesn’t get it 🤷🏾♀️
My family makes jokes & they say the taco burrito stuff to me all the time. They say my music sounds like carnival music (listening to banda) & they’re always like “do you even know what they’re saying?” They also always say they wanna learn but when i try to help them they reject me saying “i don’t speak that” I’m like how you gonna learn if you don’t let me try to show you? 😂🙄 thankfully tho my fam has been extremely supportive of it for the most part. they always say “have you done a dna test yet?? Bc all of that came from somewhere! Idc what anybody says, you got some Mexican in you SOME WHERE” 🤣 turns out ancestry said 2% mexican lol!! & my family was like yup we knew. 💀 but this was spot on. Anytime someone is speaking Spanish some where it’s always “Shelby!!! What did they say??” 😂 but overall my mom brags on me a lot telling everyone that i can speak Spanish & that Ik how to dance the way Mexicans do lol.
I got indifference from my immediate family. Now my aunt's would say "You just leaning Spanish for women ". I would say not only. Lol.
Jajaja love this video!❤️ I don’t have any family members questioning me like this but I am obsessed with the culture now, I watch everything in Spanish on Netflix but I am noway near as fluent as you! So glad I found your channel! x
Estoy aprendiendo espanol aqui. Me encanta Tu canal! Gracias!!!
I learned French first. It is nice to see a video that explores and acknowledges how socially and emotionally hard it can be to learn a new language in a world that expects you to only speak your first language 😊 I can relate.
Omg, the part about being in a store and your family needs your help is so true! Lol! I love speaking Spanish to native Spanish speakers
Dang that's messed up. Maybe its regional too tho? Since spanish is pretty regularly spoken in my area no ones had an issue with me learning Spanish. Now I when I tried to learn French my family was exactly like this tho! 😂. My dads side is Black, Cuban/ Creole. I told my dad that I was going to learn french and that man said "why on earth would you do that?! Ain't no one speaking french round here! You better learn that spanish. That's what you need to learn!"
I was hard headed but he was right 😂😂😂❤
It happened to me, my family used to make fun of me when started learning English.
The title was already so relatable that I liked before seeing the video.
Family members asking what something means hit the hardest 😂💀
"stop trying be Mexican, You are black" me reí mucho jajajajajajaja xd
That intro is EXACTLY what I’ve been scared of since beginning to learn lol
Thank you so much for this video. I have never experienced so much negativity and almost discrimination from other people. I'm trying to broaden my mind and keep learning new things, but people hate on me.
Broooooo 😂😂😂this is hilarious... funny thing is I'm Puerto Rican and African American and my "black" side will say man stop with all that Puerto Rican stuff jaja
So funny how true this is.. the stages people go through while your learning. However I am so grateful for the ones that are supportive. Estoy orgulloso de ti bro keep it up!!
Thanks for your encouragement. My family thinks I’m a joke since I’ve been learning Spanish. But it’s nice to walk down the street in Ybor City and start singing Spanish songs that I recognize. It’s kinda sad to receive accolades from perfect strangers vs family when knowing the lyrics to Spanish songs. I might just get up enough nerve to go into one of the Latino clubs for my birthday😃
Aye bro u just like me fr 😂. You look very Dominican but you African American, and I look very Puerto Rican/Mexican but my parents are from Sicily and Romania. In the last few years since I’ve gotten into high school I’ve gotten really obsessed with the Hispanic culture because at first everyone thought I was Hispanic and I didn’t really correct them all that much when they kept saying it, and a lot of my friends are Latino so when I sit with them I kind of blend in. It has also been very easy for me to learn Spanish (almost fluent now) knowing two other Latin languages and having some Latin American relatives and family friends. Lately specifically this past year, I have become even more obsessed with the culture when I started listening to more Reggaeton music after going in Italy two summers ago. When I got back from my vacation I started listening to more Hispanic music and watching funny skits about Puerto Rican’s and Dominicans. Now I know a lot more about differences between Caribbean Hispanics, South Americans, and Central Americans. I thought I was the only one that had a story like this lmao. Obviously being slightly poorer, more humble, Latin and Southern Europeans my family shares a lot of similarities with Latinos. They’ve started noticing this whole “Hispanic Phase” several months ago. They usually say stuff like “Oh first he wants to be Arab, then he’s Spanish, then he’s black. This guy wants to be everything.” Lmao 😂 But anyways bro I think we very similar and I’m very surprised but glad at the same time that someone has had a smilies experience as me. I don’t know about the whole acceptance part because I don’t think it’s that serious, Atleast not for me, but I’m currently 16 so we’ll see how good I get at this shit later on lol. They know I love cultures and they are cool with they just don’t want me to over do it and believe I’m something that I’m not. I don’t believe that I’m Latino but I do love their culture and recognize similaritieswith my own such as looks, phrases and ways of talking or acting, culture, and language wise. But aye that all man, good video, I really fucks wit your content 👍🏽
Puerto Ricans look more like Dominicans than mexican and Dominicans look like Puerto Ricans than African Americans
my family is “read this read that” 😂😂
I never had a problem with the family. I did have a strange experience at the school I workrd at. I was talking in spanish to a grandparent of a student. Co workers said I shouldn't Speak spanish because no one could understand. That didn't stop me.Excelente video.
My family does this too. Idk why they love trying to discourage me in anything I try to do, not even just learning Spanish. I'm not black still I can relate. It gets me down but I am learning to ignore them. Like you said, I'm not learning for them, I'm learning for me. Thanks for the encouragement.
This is seriously one of my favorite channels on UA-cam. Hilarious 😂
Yes! All of those things are true! My sister use to make fun of me when she heard me playing merangue . Now she wants to listening to the song about "te quiero baby",she was talking about la morena by oro solido🤣💀🇩🇴
Best video yet Ricky. ¡Tu eres la neta!
So true except in mi familia everyone is related to someone from a different ethnicity and with our Native American selves, everyone thinks my family is latina. So my family just excepted me for who I am and embraced the Spanish language with me.
This video hits the nail on the head. I remember when I was in high school, and the Spanish bug hit me. I was watching Univision on tv and my mother called me to the dinner table to eat dinner. We were eating dinner for about ten minutes and she said go turn that tv off it’s so annoying. I did not move, then my father said you heard your mother. I was so sad, I don’t know why my parents acted that way. But I kept going after that, started listening to the music and when I went to college I took every Spanish class I could and got great grades. People think I’m Hispanic and I don’t even have to speak. They see my reactions and when I order lunch they give me a side eye... I love ❤️ it
Been following you a while. You are so inspiring!!! Can't wait until I am on your level 😊
"That Spanish stuff" lol!
Currently teaching myself Spanish. I love it!
That shit really be pissing me off too.
THANKFULLY i have no bad experience w my family and spanish(since im mixed !! ) BUT i have had some confusing looks from people when they hear my accent sounds like a latin caribbean accent & they ask “omg are you dominican or puerto rican or etc. “ & im like “nooooo im actually part mexican😂💀”
it’s always hard to explain to them why i decided to study PR spanish vs mexican spanish but my big thing is bc i felt like i fit more w the latin caribbean world based on how i looked & just in general the vibe tu sabe😂!! no one ever believed i was mexican anyways so if they complain im not “true to my roots” ehhh it’s whatever 🙄💀
Being black is not a nationality, so if you´re black, it doesnt mean you have to speak english only, you can learn as many languages as you can. I´m dominican, and obviously I speak spanish, I´m also black, but I decided to learn english and now I started learning french.
Kudos!!! I know over 200 spanish words when I see them but it's hard to put sentences together my Spanish is severely broken
