- In this video, I outline 7 duties/perks that come with being an undergraduate research assistant in a psychology lab based on my own past experience. Being a research assistant is an excellent opportunity for those with a passion for psychology or anyone who is interested in pursuing graduate study in psychology. I gained so much from my research assistantship, and it prepared me so well for my current PhD program in Clinical Psychology.

Woow I loved your video, KEEP GOING👍🏼
Thank you so much!!
Great video
Thanks!
Awesome video! thank you so so much !!! just a question, are the positions to be a RA within your university or can it come from a charity or something else ? I'm a first year and I really want to try to be an RA to get work experience so I was wondering if, in order to get a position, I should be asking teachers or charities or independent psychologists (through BPS maybe?).
Thank you very much for the amazing video and taking time to read through your comment section !
RA positions can come from a variety of places, I have a post about this on my Instagram page as well: instagram.com/gradlifegrind/guide/research-info-tips/17880384313980925/
@@GradLifeGrind thank you very much !!!! you're a sweetheart !
@@sylvia.d any time!
Thank you for the enlightening video! As an undergraduate, how was the work-study balance between your course-load and your responsibilities as an RA?
It was tough to manage honestly! I took 5 classes almost every semester and spent about 16-20 hours as an RA. Time management was critical!
@@GradLifeGrind Oh, alright. Thanks for the reply! It really helps prospective RAs (like myself) to know roughly what to expect :)
@@jeremybong7238 no problem!
I’m in Jamaica would love to go to America and get some experience and do some graduate studies.
Very cool!!
We've been struggling to our thesis theoretical framework. Can you recommend any theory that will support our claim regarding psychological burden among farmers?
I don’t much about that area of research, sorry!
Hi! Just to clarify. If you do complete your masters degree in psychology, it counts as research experience for your PhD program? I’m an undergraduate student right now but I would like to apply for PhD program however I do not have any research experience.
If you get research experience in your masters program, then yes, it counts towards your competitiveness for doctoral programs. In general, getting a masters shows doctoral programs that you can handle grad level course work too, assuming you did well.
Hello 🙂 I am currently an undergraduate psychology major and I am trying to apply to a lab to gain research assistant experience, however, math (psych statistics) is not my forte . Do research assistants deal with a lot of math during their shifts when they are beginners? Also, what kind of skills are needed to excel in a lab as an undergraduate?
Hi!! Thank you so much for asking. In my experience, undergraduate research assistants don't do a lot of statistics! But research assistantships are a great way to get exposed to stats/math if you are hoping to get more confident in it. It's usually not a requirement that you are proficient in stats as an undergrad student, so you should be able to get a position just fine! Some skills I recommend are: curiosity (which will become scientific inquiry), organization, professionalism, and eagerness to learn/get involved. Best of luck!!!
Grad Life Grind Thank you very much I really appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions 😁.
