Long before the Police this was a song originally written and performed by Sting with his first band called Last Exit. Much of the police back catalogue comes from Last Exit with the songs adapted by the police and by Sting in later years. The Police version is from the film soundtrack called Brimstone & Treacle (1982)
Omar Hakim and Branford's solos are AMAZING. The full documentary film is pretty amazing to watch. You get to peer into his creative process producing songs. As far as more songs, there isn't a bad song from Sting. Not a one. Singer, songwriter, composer. You may be remembering Sting from when he was lead for the band "The Police" and they were an 80's punk/rock band.
Yes, it’s absolutely a love song. It’s a passion song, more than anything. If you liked this, Sting has a huge catalogue to explore. I know you like to watch and hear live versions, luckily Sting has many excellent live recordings. One of my favourite DVDs is called All This Time which features a concert he arranged for friends at his villa in Italy that is in two parts. The first is the creation of the band and rehearsals, and the second is the concert. What makes it very powerful is that it is scheduled to happen a day or so after the 11th of September, 2001, so you see them dealing with the shock of what happened on 9-11 and their different reactions and wondering how to go on and play what was supposed to be a joyous concert.
I love the live version of this more than the studio version. It ramps up to a much more frenetic level. This clip is from the movie/documentary Bring On The Night which tracks the launch of Sting’s solo career. It’s a great movie to watch.
The jazz element was something Sting wanted to explore after the time in The Police. He had done jazz before The Police got famous, but his record label was very worried about this ‘new direction’.
Everybody's gangster till Sting pulls out the double bass lmao. So glad you liked it! And yeah to be clear, Sting is the singer. As another commenter mentioned, this was after he went solo and left The Police, who you'd might as well check out too. For more of the cool vibes from Sting's solo career you should check out It's Probably Me ua-cam.com/video/OJ73PyDOpaA/v-deo.html; to see a more the kind of hard-rocking you were maybe expecting from this, Synchronicity II by The Police ua-cam.com/video/o5FPPoLqkCk/v-deo.html
Saw this tour in Dublin 1985....the talent on that stage is immeasurable

When Brandford Marsalis started playing his first notes on soprano I felt shivers. It's extraterrestrial!

Sting ... handsome, talented, mysterious, aggressive, sensual....ya, I kinda dig him, for a long long time. Go Back to the beginning. It's fun.

Omar Hakim is a badass drummer
