Same feeling here. Discovered Djavan earlier this year while serving in Afghanistan. There's that wonderful feel-good feeling about his music. Since then I've been alternating his songs as a ringtone on my mobile phone. Sad thing is I can't understand portuguese......though I've been listening to various lusophone musicians since 12 years now.
I was a huge fan of Bossa Nova and Sergio Mendez but some how I missed Djavan I just discovered him in 2015. His discography is beyond amazing he writes about love and his navtive country and God how he flatters wormen in his songs. sometimes lyrics are meaningless or ambivalent but the total effect is beautiful music. I am so in luv w this artist his warm and beautiful voice caresses my soul. Thanks for sharing.
Believe me: Djavan lyrics can be anything but meaningless. There are a lot of Brazilian folkloric and cultural roots in his music, which can make it complicated for other nationalities to understand sometimes. It requires lots of sensibility and cultural studying in order to understand 100% of his work, even for most of Brazilians themselves. :) He is awesome.
I totally agree with @Lucas Costa on this. Believe me: his lyrics can be considered poetry by itself, just read to get the experience. And I can help with that if you want it; it will be a pleasure! Probably for being from a northeastern Brazil, Alagoas, his music tells us a lot about this region culture, which is not very well as known as Southeast like Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, even for Brazilian as well to another country's people.
This groove and harmony will be enough to convince most of us here to admire Djavan, but the real Jewelry of his work are his Lyrics. They are gorgeously written in formal Portuguese, without loosing touch with popular scenes. It would be awesome if foreigners could listen Djavan as we do.
Hi ! DJAVAN is the Brasilian musician that I prefer, and I know many of his songs, cause for me, the Brasilian music is "the sugar of the music" I bought 2 DJAVAN's songbooks, plus the chords and lyrics that we can find on Internet, so I know I-don't-know-how many of his songs, without being pretentious. I've never been in BRASIL, but will go there for 2 months in 2021, to learn more and more Brasilian songs. I love Joao BOSCO, Chicon BUARQUE, Carlos LYRA, Roberto MENESCAL, of course VINICIUS, Tom JOBIM, Joao GILBERTO, Gilberto GIL (that I've seen 5 times, cause he's the Brasilian musician that comes the more in FRANCE), etc.....The Brasilian music is the style of music that I prefer. I hope I'll be able to go there and see concerts, with that fucking Corona virus. CIAO BYE !
We can feel that they're really having fun! Djavan's extreme musicality and swing naturally pushed each musician of this (already) top band to a whole new level resulting in one of the best performances ever of the whole Night Music season! No doubt, one of the top 5 live band music shows ever too!
Marcus Miller and Hiram seemed to vibe off of one another whenever they played together. Hiram was always shaking his hips! 😆 And I love Don Alias' improv/solo. RIP Hiram Bullock RIP Don Alias
When I watched the show it was on cable at a reasonable hour, but that was at a time when many people did not have cable. I wish that I had lived in Brazil in the era of the samba and bossa nova, but still I feel very lucky to have known the jazz-rock fusion era...I was also crazy about country rock and country swing!
Show, in 1983 I was to a Djavan Show in São Paulo, Palácio das Concepções do Anhambi.
Djavan's songs are quite difficult to understand even to Brazilians, because his lyrics are not concerned in making any sense, but rhyming. The translation of this is: Part 1: The morning came to rescue me with flowers and birds Gentle, loose [birds] with blue wings Butterflies in a rabble. One say "rocks can't speak". I wonder if they could. Me, Anna? Love me, burn me in your bed. The velvet of the speech. That kiss which is sweet. Arrest me, equalize me, surrender me with your bullet/candy (1)
What a monstrous lineup. The late great Hiram Bullock obviously having a great time. Love Djavan, Brazil's Al Jareau who he toured with in the late 90`s.
The guy playing percussion is also a monster of jazz. If I remember well, Don Alias was the guy who recorded the classic Jaco Pastorius' version of Donna Lee.
Of course, I was joking about no talent appearing on this show! My collection is filled with American jazz-rock fusion, samba bossa nova, and all other types of music, except for rap. I discovered Brazilian music by seeing on the covers of the popular jazz albums all of those Brazilian artists. Many times I have been lucky to see some of them on my trips to Brazil.
The name of this song is "Asa". Djavan is a great brazilian musician. He has beautiful songs like "Flor de Lis", "Oceano", "Meu bem querer", "Se", "Sina.
Translating the first 8 verses, that's what you got: The morning rescued me with flowers & birds, Soft, free, with blue wings, Butterflies flock, You say that stones doesn't talk What would they say if they did talk Me, Nurse? Love me Burn me in your bed The velvet of speech
Honestly, I don't know the name of the song. I would say it is a song that Djavan has on one of his albums. The format on Night Music was for David Sanborn and the band to back up the feature musician. If you wan't to narrow it donw, this was somewhere around 1989 or 1990.
R.I.P. Hiram Bullock
