Have you ever stopped to wonder why Link, our lovable protagonist of The Legend of Zelda, doesn't ever speak? Well, beyond making the character easier for players to project themselves onto Link, there's actually an in-universe reason that we discover in the Creating a Champion book for Breath of the Wild! Let's explore that reason.
What was your favorite part of The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild? Let me know!

he does have some pretty wild dialogue options when talking to npcs, and another bit of insight which we find from Zelda's diary is that link is a bit of a glutton, scarfing down any meal infront of him
this is why he gets so excited when making a good meal in game

Well who wouldn’t be excited when they’ve got a good meal right in front of them?

Link has a "diary" in botw. It's his quest log, but only in certain languages like Japanese or Russian you can actually see that he writes in first person. He explains his emotions in more detail there.
QuestWithAaron did a video on that if you're interested.
Whenever I play, I read the quests in first person to myself 😅
I wish they did that in English too. I think it'd be more immersive

quick resume: nintendo didnt want to pay a voice actor
Zelda's diary tells us that link is just going through what ever man goes through daily
Urbosa explained that Zelda resented Link because he already had full access to his abilities and she had unsuccessfully tried to unlock hers her entire life. She was also supposed to hear the Master Sword talking like Link can. Every time she looked at him she was reminded of her failures.
Personally I always defined Link's stockiness/quietness as a blank slate to impress our own personalities onto. In his situations, how/what you feel is what Link's feeling. If you're a "vocal" gamer, then your talking is Link's talking. If that all makes sense.
I'm certain this is what it stems from, but I have a hunch players wanted an "in-universe" reason 🤔
ye I figured that it was for immersion, but lore is part of what makes a game fun and considering you've played as this character for hundreds of hours you just get curious

I like how they show him gesturing that he's talking. Sometimes I find myself filling in what he was supposed to say and then they respond. It's like I'm in his shoes.
I find myself relating to this Link way too much, and I honestly find it comforting to play as him. I know people have joked about him having ASD-and he definitely wasn’t written with that intent-but his difficulty communicating, his emotional masking, and his hilariously blunt and honest responses make it really easy for me-a person with ASD and these exact same characteristics-to connect with this character. Even his backstory reminded me of my childhood and how I just kind of went silent and expressionless as more and more pressure to be what other needed me to be mounted. The only real significant difference between him and me is that he has purpose and gets to be a legitimate hero who is able to make his job what he actually excels in AND engage his passions at the same time.
I really like to think that on the inside, Link’s true personality is the embodiment of that scene in avatar with Aang’s marble trick
This was also explained in game if tiu read zeldas diary in hyrule Castle, zelda asks link why he doesn't talk he and he says he needs to be silently strong for the people
It's so funny because link is the most expressive and silly when he isn't around the champions or Zelda, like a woman asking " do you know the ancient hero ? " And he's like " I'm he "
it’s because of how many lines they would need via a voice actor lol
Link was actually chattier in Skyward Sword, even having the option to sass Impa before she and Zelda go through the Gate of Time. But I guess reincarnating so many times has made Link a bit weary.
SS Link is so extremely sassy. Mocking Groose's pompadour is one the greatest things ever.
ss link was the goofiest
"Am i late?"
Impa: LINK NOWS NOT THE TIME!
Link does speak, in game. Every time the game gives us a dialogue option, Link is speaking through them. We may not hear his voice when he does so, but we also don’t hear the NPCs’ voices when chat with them outside of cutscenes
we do kinda though. they make noises but their still voices
It’s obviously telepathy.
My favorite thing is that Sati said that he expresses himself more and tears in the Kingdom. He hums to himself when he cooks.
The only sentence Link able to speak is,
"Well.. Excuuuusee me Princess"
Remember, link still openly talks to npc, and most the dialog in the shika slate is written by link.
I hope that however TOTK ends, Link finally gets to say something. If Link dies in a heroic sacrifice to save Hyrule, give him a badass one liner to cap his story.

I think the developers decided to keep Link quiet to eternity in the games so every single person playing like him could feel identified. With no voice you can imagine yourself being the hero, by that way Link becomes universal.
So basically Link is trying to avoid being cancelled by just never speaking.
You also find out through entries that Link does speak once in a while, but only when absolutely necessary. Kinda like Samus if you think about it (except Other M), but to a higher degree.
Link is an honest short kid
It's not some internal conflict thing of him being "unable to express himself".
In fact, he says very clearly to Zelda that he thinks it's important that with how many eyes are on him, "someone silently carries every burden".
You can't have a hero who falters when everyone's hopes depend upon him standing strong against any and all danger.
"Link is an honest, serious man, committed to his duties"
I've mucked about in botw for hours and haven't once tried fighting gannon lmaoooo
**cut to Link on two flying minecarts**

They didn’t want to pay a voice actor.
True 😂
Excuse me princess 🤣
Well they still got a guy in there to record all 200+ (and that is not an exaggeration) grunts and other trademark Link noises. I can’t imagine it would’ve been too much more expensive to hire some people to dub his voice in what few voiced cutscenes there were. I think it comes more from a place of fearing alienation from the audience than anything else. For as long as the mainline franchise has existed, Link was a silent protagonist, and changing that could’ve very well caused an uproar from people who either
a: didn’t like how the voice was cast in whatever dub
b: don’t like how his character was handled
or c: hate the change in general

I think I'm in the minority that Link should get some dialogue some day. Maybe not soon but one day
I feel like just one line would be enough. But make it as impactful as possible.
I agree! I heard a theory once that the reason why Link could interact properly with NPCs in botw is only because he had forgotten the pressure of his duties…makes me wonder if we’ll hear him say a line or two in totk
I think the best way to do it is for him to just have one cool one liner as his only dialogue. You know, an exchange like
