- An original song based on a poem by Amanda Carolan. In honor of all those pals who fought in WW1.
Words and music by Ian Edwards and Amanda Carolan.
Original Poem:
Shoulder to shoulder with these Pals of mine
Not to join would feel a crime
Heads held high, we’ll return as heroes
Do town and country proud
Us pals together, can not die
Lest you forget, Our tale must be told
21 shillings, for a weekly pay
It’ll be over by Christmas Day
21 shillings, means you won’t starve
21 shillings for a broken heart
It’s a strange war, it’s hard to realise
Why the waiting, Is it really war at all
Our vision’s blinkered by these walls
But Overhead an arch of blue
No man’s land’s a tangled desert
A terrible state of disarray
21 shillings, for a weekly pay
It’ll be over by Christmas Day
21 shillings, means you won’t starve
21 shillings for a broken heart
It won’t be long now, I hear, Captain Charlie say
Fight strong and straight lads
And we’ll be home, for Christmas Day
Our guns fall silent, our time has come
Don’t be scared remember where your from
A hundred went an only ten come home
21 shillings, for a weekly pay
It’ll be over by Christmas Day
21 shillings, means you won’t starve
21 shillings for a broken heart
Beautiful song about a horrific war!
Thank you Carol for your kind comment.
