- How to remove throttle slack from a Yamaha MT09 (FZ09) (2015)
Warning for new riders...
WARNING - Removing throttle slack can cause slight throttle activation on FULL lock - Check test and be Aware!
This could've been a 20 second video, i don't know how you managed to stretch it out to 12 frickin minutes, but thank you anyways
Thanks a lot for this. I didn't know you could adjust the slack. It was driving me nuts!
I just picked up my 2014 mt09 3 days ago. It has heated grips I presume they are aftermarket. It has about 1cm of free play. Glad to see this instructional. I will try reduce it a tad.
"If your new to riding and you have an mt-09, Holy shit.".... That had me cracking up in laughter but i agree 100%
I’m gonna subscribe because I just bought a FZ09/MT09 just now and I like your videos.
My throttle slack is too much. I’m glad you made a video on it.
Thank you. 👍
Makes a lot of difference to response especially when you really need it..
As you say not too tight or you'll be doing a lest hand turn at 90 instead of thirty.
WEGGY zx12r Yeah it does help a lot to control a powerful bike, check and adjust, best to test full lock before riding! ;o)
Cheers Weggy

Thanks for that just bought one last week and this has made quite a difference along with adding on the Co setting as I have a BOS exhaust. No information on the internet so i just slapped it up to 20. Still not 100% happy that the bike doesn't totally agree with my wrist on Standard and A mode. don't like the idea of having to spend money on a power commander to rectify this, but if that is what I have to do then so be it. Have you got rid of the snappy throttle on yours....
Thank you for this, just got mine a few weeks ago and I’ve been fucking up my shifts since then because of that horrible slack. Can’t wait to try this
My throttle on my m09 is very heavy, is there something to do about it?
thanks for the advice. Ive sorted mine now also. I also had too much side movement. I wrapped some ptfe on the inner side between the left side of grip and main body of the handle. works a treat! been riding with the mod for 2 months now no issues
Samad Lone Awesome, mine seems ok side to side, but instead of ptfe try using those large PLASTIC plummer washers for a better Finnish :)

Mr B
Thank you for yet another awesome vid..... That slack was getting on my nerves and now thanks to you it's not
Nice one Mr B, can't stand throttle slack myself but it does depend on what bike you're on, I must admit I don't mind it as much on a cruiser as I did on the old sportsbikes, RSM8 RI.
Skeggy Cruiser Yeah, when you got a lot of power and throttle slack you can get wrist ache trying to hold the slack off.
Cheers Buddy

Nice and simple mod. Might have to give this a go on my bike. I hate having slack too.
TheSpikeyBiker Yeah, I don't know anyone that likes slack, it's heavy on the wrist and unpredictable, yuck!

Mr B
Another great video. I always learn so much from you. Keep posting them. Thank you!

Just done mine. Much better with near zero slack. Now don't get me going about MT09 chain slack adjustment.
Will adjusting the throttle slack help that annoying first gear slack in the engine also ? For example when you put in first gear and just release clutch slowly to full release it does not run smoothly. Dont know how to explain.
Check your fueling (map), could be too lean or too much fuel...with AFR ~14.5 it should start smoooooth
Thanks bro...
Hi mate, another good informative v'log, just at 04:41 you siad that it's 3-5 mm, then at 04:54 you say it's 3-5 cm's : P
P.s. for someone who doesn't like grass on the pitch, it needs a trim & it looks like Noddys moving in lol ; )
Rsm8
sharky09000 Hehe very observant, I left it in as re-shooting the whole thing? nah! :D Yeah grass takes second place over MT09 ;o) - Noddy will move out soon as new pipe on :)
Cheers Bud

I've got my brand new XSR900 yesterday and after the first few hundred meters, i notice unacceptable throttle slack (Great VDO on this issue by the way) but also unacceptable side by side play. While first thing I will do today is to remove the throttle slack (which I've done on all bikes I ever own), I wonder if someone has a quick fix for the side by side play?
great video as i have been facing this issue with my 2015 MT09 tracer. i was thinking yes thats it but when i checked the throttle this morning there wasn't really any slack. i am experiencing a jerkiness in the throttle response which is frustrating as the bike is great otherwise. took it to yamaha here in barcelona but they were no real help. facing another issue with fuel consumption as i thought it should be better. any help would be massively appreciated. thanks
Try adjusting the Fueling - Video link - ua-cam.com/video/4jpXD-3fybA/v-deo.html

Mr B
Thanks Mr B
Yeah I've had the same jerkiness because of no slack at all....very danger when cruising with one hand or slow maneuver
Sat on one today at the MCN show , looks really nice to ride, let us know how you get on with it rsm8
byker mike Will do buddy, stay tuned to find out!

Just a little thought ...with the instant throttle nature (some call it jerkiness)of this bike..if you ride over a bump or pothole or whatever, and without the slight lack of play (thats there as standard.).. is there a danger of getting the throttle on without anticipating it...catching you out ...say mid corner or as you're braking?...not a criticism..or being awkward..i'm getting the same bike next week so i'd like to know if its a possibility...?
dmandhelen I've never pulled the throttle by accident, not sure how that could be possible, don't take this the wrong way but have you ridden long? Correctly holding the bars should never cause accidental control. If you are worried I'm happy to help with some tips. Enjoy the Bike, take it steady, work your way through the modes starting with B :)

dmandhelen Just to add - we do a live hangout every Thursday at 9pm, so you can ask any questions 'live' to the panel :)
Mr & Mrs B's Brain Dump well I've done 14,000 miles on my z800 in the last year and about 60,000 miles since i got my first bike 5 years ago and i agree I've not had that happen to me on the kawi.or others....but its throttle is extremely smooth and predictable with not a hint of jerkiness .. I've heard of some throttles being super sensitive from other bikers thats all and wondered if this could be a problem with this bike....thank you for your reply...;-0
Mr & Mrs B's Brain Dump and you've got to keep in mind that you're giving this advice to people who might not be as experienced as you ...who might not handle the bike as well as you ....
dmandhelen Best advice I can give you is stop reading and start feeling, I think you will understand that. But please feel free to ask me for any advice.

Não entendo porque a Yamaha não colocou o sensor do acelerador eletrônico na manopla da moto ao invés de usar aquelas porcarias de cabos que só dão dor de cabeça e folgas indesejadas no acelerador.
That sure would be annoying! Great video x
jenny666barnish It *was* very annoying, all fixed now though, Cheers Jen

Sweet. Thank you 👍
Just picked up my bike today. 2015 ABS. There was no throttle slack at all.
Hi Mr. B, need your advise....why my left hand especially palm & fingers feel numb during riding this MT09? i have no idea for this, what happen actually...need your advise...
Are you using your legs to support your weight or your wrists? (You should use knees to grip tank) also check bar end weights are tight.
RSMF-*RI*
Mr B
i think i use my leg to support my weight...using knee to grip tank can solved this? How? Can you explain more?...thanks...Mr. B. (like a boss).
its the harmonics (vibrations) of the bar. it wont happen to every one or on every bike. adding heavier bar ends, changing bars etc can help. I got the same thing on my right hand on my ktm duke, while not on any of my other bikes. changed bars, added heavier bar ends and problem solved.
ok..understood...thank you bro...
Thank You for the help ur awesome.
+Victor Reyes hehe, many thanks Victor, awesome comment!
RSMF-*RI*
Mr B
how do you fix when the throttle grip moves from side to side?
+GRRB Large plastic washers from a DIY store :)
RSMF-*RI*
Mr B
Thought the 09 was ride by wire. Owell will go adjust the cable now
It is...wire goes to the sensors and sensors operate motorized throttle bodies
I hate throttle slack too...
lol maybe do an edited version Mr B and count the number of times you said the words "throttle slack" could even make a competition out of it :)
Darth Peachy Haha wow, now you mention it I gave up counting after 20! Cheers Buddy

Mr & Mrs B's Brain Dump No probs mate, there are a few things I am aware I tend to say alot and no matter how much I try I can't curb it. I did something similar with "gun gum" when I was patching up the exhaust on the ZZR. But I know how you like your competitions and thought it was worth a mention :)
now that's how to do it...
Tosh twentythree Indeed, no slack here :)
Cheers Tosh

Mr B
Nice
Anoying ain't it, that throttle slack? :) And this fix is free!
Best mod sofar for me is the O2-controller from Kevinxtx though.
Kwakboy By the way, if you find that throttle still is somewhat sloppy, side to side... You could fit a teflon folie and ring on that throttle.
There's even a kit for it on Louis:

;)
Kwakboy Yeah, a simple fix for free, nothing worse then slack. Now I'm waiting for the first free service before I make any changes.
Cheers Buddy

Sooooo simple!
Matt Cornell It really is! - Cheers Buddy
