- Why do Harley Davidson engines sound different to other engines and also from other v-Twins but also different through the H-D engine eras too?

the other main thing that makes the pa ta toe pa ta toe pa ta toe sound has to do with the fact that they DO NOT pick which cylinder to fire... unlike your automobile. In other words they fire the spark plugs (both of them) at the same time, whether its a combustion stroke for that cylinder or not. In other words both plugs fire at the same time, all the time. This causes a very strange sound because there is a partial re-burn in the off cylinder. This is very unique to the old air cooled V twins. The Revolution Max does not work this way... so, it does not sound the same as an air-cooled V twin.
FortNine did an excellent video some time back (search) explaining the pa ta toe sound. There isn't a firing order ! Big Surprise !

The Fort Nine guy is a physicist and actually I’ve heard him discuss these topics and he has a deep understanding as to what you’re saying.
Cheers.
BMW boxer is a 360 degree twin. Both pistons go "out" and "in" together. Otherwise, it would be a paint mixer.
Meh, I think it's mostly lumpy cams. I don't even hear potato sounds in M8s that aren't cammed. Big V8s used to have that sound like they're about to die, then fire at the last instant. I don't think anything is made to idle that slowly anymore.
I saw one guy make a Victory sound like that by adding a washer welded onto a screw that he attached to the end of his pipes. The idea being to reflect the sonic wave back down the pipe. It worked. It sounded pretty authentic.
I have a Ducati ST3 with more open system, sound like a V8. Better than newer Testastretta.
Harley's potatoes got thrown out with the integrity of the company.
Hi Alf I love the sound of the Harley’s I think they are lovely bikes but I love the sound of the Ktm 1290 adv I had and the cross plane engine of the Yamaha’s all got a distinctive sound plus my rocket I have now sounds lovely triples always do I think anyway loving your videos will you get out and make some of you riding your Harley soon hope so ride safe take care
The potato ended with the evolution motor. The dual firing of both pistons at the same time resulted in the third “to” being unspent gases.

Bad engineering. Built-in poor primary AND secondary balance along with uneven exhaust pulses cause the distinct flatulent blat that Harleys are notorious for.
