This and One day in September....ahh the memories. Best code of Football, hands down, no need for cheerleaders or halftime entertainment, because you need the break to recover for the next half. When you get two sides playing one another and it is goal for goal and you don't know who is going to win, there is nothing else like it.

Rugby is the main code in Queensland, New South Wales and New Zealand.
The rest of us mostly follow Aussie Rules.
There was a guy at a Rugby match who heckled during the national anthem and he was booted out hard and fast.
Edit, every ANZAC day there is a special game and during the minute silence you could hear a pin drop despite 100,000 people in attendance.

No. Rugby is NOT the main game in NSW, Queensland and the Australian Capital Territory. Rugby is Rugby Union, a game that originated in the private schools of the English upper class and then adopted by a small minority of toffs and private school kids in the wealthy parts of Sydney. Rugby League is the main game in these states and territories. It’s a different game that originated in working class England and was taken up as a professional game in NSW and Queensland in the early 20th century.
Rugby Union is the main code in New Zealand.

VFL morphed into the AFL when the league became a national league . Before that we only had individual state leagues and no national competition. EDIT Aussie Rules was codified in 1859 . It was the first football code in the world to do so . Parts of the game were influenced by Marngrook , an indigenous game , that is possibly 1000s of years old . We still have all our Aussie Rules state leagues.I wouldn't worry about being controversial. We are a thick skinned mob who show our patriotism in our own way . So we're not going to shit on you for your patriotism or how you choose to show it .

I have a young friend who, like yourself, is a born and bred Texan. He started coming to Australia about a decade ago, to play professional baseball for a local Adelaide team. This was always in the American off season. He wasn't major league in America, but as I understand it, was minor league professional. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Anyway, on his second trip Down Under he met a young Australian lass. They began a relationship. And on his third such trip, he stayed. He is now a permanent resident, and is working his way to becoming an Australian citizen. He will then hold dual citizenship. The most remarkable thing is when I first met him, his Texan accent was just like yours. But over the intervening years, his accent has softened. He will never sound like an Aussie. But he doesn't sound Texan either. And he loves Australian Rules football, and is growing to like the game of cricket, although he has not lost his love for baseball. Oh, and the Aussie lass he fell for is now his life partner.

Many of these marks or 'speccies' are legendary, and many Victorians and Melburnians know them like the back of their hand. They're cemented in Victorian sporting folklore. The one at 3.27 is probably the most famous, taken by Alex Jesaulenko in the 1970 VFL Grand Final in front of 121,696 spectators (record attendance for VFL/AFL) with the famous commentary of 'Jesaulenko, you beauty'. I would often get this in the playground during kick to kick because of my first name, Jeremy. I saw Alex one day on my lunch break at the local servo. People were in awe of seeing the great man, and you do come across famous footballers in Melbourne from time to time.
There are several other very famous marks here too, like Trevor Barker and Royce Hart.
Just thought I'd express how much footy means to some of us, and the romanticism associated with this classic song. My relo was the youngest player ever for Richmond Football Club, and he raised some pretty amazing daughters, one of which that had a Hollywood contract, and she was the lead actress in a picture with Ronald Reagan! There's a bizarre connection for you.

Obviously a man in need of a new football code. What you've seen here is Aussie Rules, originally conceived to keep cricket players fit in the off season. This footage comes from the Victorian Football League, which later went national to become the AFL. There's quite a few videos on here to help explain what's going on, if you want to prepare yourself for the next time they venture across the Pacific.
Rugby League, derived from Rugby Union or English rugby, is also worth a look. Again, plenty of explanatory stuff on here. The NRL is putting on a show in Vegas in March next year, if you like what you see.

Oh dear, what have you done? You've opened the AFL floodgates, that's what. And the tear ducts in my case. I wondered how this song would hold up after 50 years, but it's as visceral as ever. There's nothing to compare to the big blokes flying through the air doing a speckie! (Edit: a speckie is a "spectacular mark', often getting an extra lift off another player's shoulders. A mark is the catch of a kicked ball which earns the catching player a free kick. Very valuable when these blokes can accurately kick 50 metres, or 55 yards; many can kick from outside the 50 metre line and score a goal.)

You said one controversial thing to my ears and that was to say this was Rugby to your eyes. You should never be allowed into Victoria after hearing that. Only half joking :) It is Australian Rules Football or Aussie Rules Footy for short.
You were right about the effects of this Australian Football on the body of players. Knee replacements are common and most of your joints take a battering if you play this sport every winter from ages of teens to your 30's. My older brother would always have his shoulders dislocated and trainers would come out during the match to pop them back into place. That was enough education as a 13 year old to tell me if I play this sport all through my youth and into my 30's I will be walking around like a 70 year old when it in my early 40's. So I played enough seasons in my youth to enjoy it without doing it every season to save my knee and shoulder joints for rest of my life, I watched and gone to a lot more games that I ever played. Played cricket in summer a lot more than football in winter so knees took some damage for bowling in cricket but nowhere near as much if I had played football every winter.

@@SonofBuck-f7z Whilst your lot was working out your own code of football, which I know as Gridiron, over here in Victoria in the late 1850's they were working out their own form of football which would be known as Melbourne Rules football first, then Victorian football and eventually Australian football as we call in now. But over the border in New South Wales they stuck to Rugby which more a British imported game for private schools originally from what I understand. To this day most people in New South Wales and Queensland grow up following Rugby and every state in Australia plays our own game. I see Rugby and Gridiron a bit similar. Mainly they throw the ball in Gridiron and Rugby but in Aussie rules footy it mainly kicking and throwing is illegal. Obviously for most of the world in Europe, South America and Africa they play soccer and in their own way they think of soccer as their football. So Americans and Aussies are the odd ones out in the world in playing our own developed codes of football. Actually I should also mention in Ireland they play another form of football called Gaelic football. The Kiwis stick to only Rugby just like the states of New South Wales and Queensland.

In fact, Australian Rules Football is the oldest codified sport in the world; it comes from our early history, stablished in May 1859 as a way to keep cricket players fit in the off season(summer). The first established competition was in 1879 by the South Australian Football Association(changed name to South Australian National Football League), and is the longest continuously run competiton in the world; the Victorian Football Association commenced later that year, and the Victorian Football League started with clubs breaking away from the VFL.

With you on bending the knee......can be NO knee bending in a free society.
Aussie Rules is nothing like Rugby.
Both American & Canadian football started as Rugby, with opposing sides facing each other in 2 seperate lines across a rectangular field which is 100 yards long by about 50 yards wide.
Aussie Rules has 18 field positions spread around the entire ground, every player kicks the ball, handles the ball, handpasses ( a punch ) the ball and must be able to run, hit and take a hit .
The Aussie Rules ground is oval shaped ( originally cricket grounds ) and have NO set dimensions, but usually between 150 and 200 yards long .
    80 to 150 yards wide.
The MCG holds approximately 100,000 fans ( all seated ), but used to hold over 140,000 when standing sections were jam packed with devoted fans.
The record crowd for a VFL game was almost 140,000 before i was born......from memory it was probably in the 1940's when Melbournes entire population was less than 1 million.
These days they say only about 121,000 because the AFL want people to believe their hype and lies.
The VFL drew bigger crowds when the 12 teams played each other every Saturday with all senior games starting about 2:15 pm.
Now the game is fully professional and managed by corporate gangsters and lawyers , so all the historical facts have been re written......the same people who want all of us to " bend the knee " on demand.

Mike, I see you've copped some flak over your comments around the knee thing with NFL and some people have bailed on your channel. That's sadly a symptom of how society is more divided these days. I personally don't agree with you on that point, I think those guys were taking a knee as a protest to some pretty serious social and justice issues your country has yet to deal with. But just because I don't agree with you on that topic, doesn't mean I discount your right to your opinion, nor does it mean I write you off as a human being and bail on your channel.
Humans are complex bundles of contradictions and to be so black or white with who we hang around with does absolutely nothing for closing any divide. It's easy to hate groups of people from a distance, but once you hang out with individuals from those groups it's far easier to find common ground on many other topics. I wish more people could get that.

Same here mate gone woke and racism garbage keep changing rules its finished for me
I grew up on it we start playing as soon as can catch and kick ball
Now might as well be touch footy
Oversea people think its still tough but soft as butter now
You cant even yell stuff in the crowd now they'll ban you for life
So not interested and funny thing is alot of younger ones like my nephew
Who was bought up on it and was financial supporter of his team
But has walked away without any prompting because the politics involved in it and constant rule changes
Hed had enough and now follows soccer instead
Sadly all our sports going this way now rugby as well
So for me its done and dusted
They'll still get their 100,000 on grand final day as in the clips
But many games crowds down they promote the bigger game attendances
To make it look like had no effect but the ammount of people i know who no longer follow or support
One used to have minimum 4 yearly club tickets and no longer follows either
So i understand exactly where your coming from
Cheers mate still a great song and clips of a era gone bye Sadly
There will be plenty disagree with me but how i see it
They still play without padding only mouth guard and some who prone to concussion where a soft head gear
Nothing like your guys but taking almost all contact out 🤬 🦘🇦🇺👍
