- George Watsky is a writer and performer from San Francisco now based in Los Angeles. A veteran of the spoken word community and a rising rapper who has found a new following online, George was featured on Season 6 of Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry on HBO. He was the 2006 Youth Speaks Grand Slam Poetry Champion, 2006 Brave New Voices International Poetry Slam Champion, and performed in a record six consecutive Youth Speaks Grand Slam Finals. In 2009 George was one of three poets who performed live on FOX at the NAACP Image Awards in honor of Russell Simmons' lifetime achievement award, and in 2010 he performed live as a guest on the Ellen Degeneres Show. He has also been profiled on the Carson Daily Show, in Billboard Magazine and on CBS News. George's self-released debut, Watsky, reached as high as #7 on the iTunes Hip Hop albums chart.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)
Just an FYI, this is not a comedy club. The audience is reactive and laughing, you just cannot hear it because they are not mic'd.
Just for all the comments mentioning that it was a tough crowd. They loved it.
Really? A few comments below yours there's a women that says she was in the crowd and said the crowd didn't really get most of it. I think if this exact Tedx happened today it would get a whole different crowd reaction. Watsky was just ahead of his time.

i could see how you could think that haha i find that his lisp actually makes alot of his rhymes very unique it amplifies specific words that otherwise wouldn't sound the same from someone without that speech impediment.

Our English teacher shower this to us last week in honor of what I guess is now "TEDtalk Month" in out classroom. I've known about Watsky way before he showed us this video, but I got to say, you start to appreciate somwone even more when no one else in the room gets it. I was probably the only one laughing in the whole class because no one else, even the notoriously known freestylers and book worms didn't even make a sound. By the end of the video, everyone was asking eachother what he was saying and what the point was. Its moments like these that make me realize that Watsky and I hope other great prodigies always have to deal with. That theres the mass majority of people who will never understand the points of speeches or the idea about vents. Its the smart people who get the crap during their shining hours.

that poem at the end made me feel sooooo good about myself. I have a lisp, its not any worse than watsky's, but i would still love to memorize that poem to use for my own "fuk-you i do wat i want" type of speech.

i use your inspiration everday. i get walked by and passed over because a lady in her big suburban on a cell phone caused an accident that left my legs spine and body crushed. i lost my left leg completely. two decades and 40 surgeries later i still receive no benefits and pretty much because i am white in a corrupt system my three kids and i were and are homeless gypsies being walked over. yet my eldest is at Willamette on very hard earned art and psycology major scholorships in the worst school in THE STATE OF COLORADO and they have their noses up at the charity white girl while they party and fail classes. and my other 2 with me are just as amazing. i could and can only use my voice and my story. and yes.. i am learning timing now that my battlecry is being heard just slightly. your work and love of earth is mine a peaceful hippie from a liitle town of nowhere in love with it. i have 3 faithful therapy cats. my dream is to talk more or meet YOU! carry on brave and wise soldier you serve your people well. thank you. I love this video, iv been bullied, and picked on for half of my life because i have ADHD, turrets, ADD, and im chubby. But after a while i inbraised all of that and used it to my advantage, im chibby, but im hella strong, im really active, and cheerful, and love to help others, and i love working hard in school. Ignorance must surely be bliss...Watsky, in my eyes, has a very protagonist view on life. I don't consider myself "educated" but I've done some time in school. His words, both in spoken word and in music ring true. It's sad to see the labeling being brought because of a non-issue. Lucky you're able to make your statements on a platform where your words can be seen. Lucky you can have those moments of superiority, when in anonymity you can bash someone behind a screen and a keyboard. Lastly, lucky that I have the presence of mind to look upon those who have negativity in mind and not lose mine.
Silence is a form of respect. It's sort of a thing they do in the TEDtalks audience.

he is on such a different intellectual level and nobody is ready for it, they expect to be spoon fed humor and entertainment but he makes their minds work for it, and more than half the time is rejected by their mind and they go on smiling with the rest of the majority of everyone around them with the same exact process happening.
its so hard to think that this guy is the same guy who has written, preformed, and sung one of my favorite songs of all time.

George Watsky truly is awesome, inspirational, and talented. And we are blessed that he can share his talent with us without becoming corrupted and selling out.
Saw him and met him in person in Feb. He is such a humble guy and very inspiring. I had tears rolling down my cheeks at his performance. I love Watsky :)

He's so amazingly talented and inspiring. I needed this today, this year. I'm at the end of my rope but I know now my kids can change, and change I must if I'm to meet their needs, nourish the seeds, I can't let go of. Hope. Though I don't have much, I make me tough, I'll end this rush of love and thankfulness with a sincere thanksgiving for a boy, nay, a man, nay, and inspiration, name of George, name of Watsky.

I think Watsky has got it down. He gives gratitude to the moments and people in his life that have shaped him. It seems to me that he understands that any greatness he has, comes from being shown the path to walk down. And then he made the choice to walk down that path of greatness.
Tears at the vivid description of the kids having left for college and sitting on their bed at night. He just showed me my future without even knowing me. Love your stuff George.
This is brilliant... stumbled upon Watsky "The Moral of The Story" which led me here... Love TED talks, so happy to see a young person who has so much wisdom and intelligence to offer.

Finally discovered Watsky randomly last year on Spotify. So LUCKY I did, as much as I enjoy his raps/music videos(which is a lot) his poetry is amazing. Ive always wanted to try and make music, but after finding Watsky Ive found its easier for me to express in poetry and not worry about trying to make it fit into a musical form. Just let it speak for its self.
Bo has said exactly the following in an AMA:
"I would love to collaborate with George. He super talented and much more talented lyrically than I am (so I'd be happy to get my ass handed to me)."
He was talking specifically about Watsky, not some other dude named George.

I think that's the point, you'd have to hear him say his poetry multiple times and really listen to the intricacies and layers, his work is more complicated than something which can be immediately understood.
I suppose it just means you get to listen to more Watsky :D

Wonderful presentation; I hope educators there were as affected as I was and hopefully were also motivated by the success of a positive push rather than punishment. If a few more of us start thinking that way (bless that teacher!), the world might be a better place.

The way I interpreted the comment was that Watsky carries himself with amazing old school style, irony is that he is an influential figure on UA-cam, a digital platform of the new age. He's a synthesis of the old and the new.
