Oh yes. Dive deep. The educational side is very important. It helps us immensely not to go chasing every defect on soft clearcoat. Keep teaching......im listening, Brian!
Wow! Very informative. I would be interested in the commercial grade paint that is in white trucks and vans. Mainly interested in filling in rock chips and spot spaying paint. Thanks for all you put into your videos.
I really appreciate your efforts to impart some of the knowledge you have regarding the enhancement and care of clearcoat and paint finishes to the rest of us.
That’s a lot of material for a 101 class, but much appreciated. No need to apologize. Can’t be easy to draw that way while trying to maintain a clear view of the whiteboard for us. I’m sure the Shop Manager approves.😁
I’m letting you know Brian. Class is in Session when you speak. Can’t wait for more of this. Yes Deep Dive. For those who have a short attention span you’re gonna miss out on how paint breathes, expand, contracts etc.. It’s rare these future topics are explained for FREE. Les go all 3 Brian’s 🫡
Great video all of us need to hear. One area I have started to run into is hand applied clearcoat or aka snake oil. Some detailers just apply the clearcoat over the swirled, burnt through clearcoat, and failing clearcoat. You can polish the scratched area and the top is smooth as silk but the scratches are still very visible. The jobs where the detailer burnt through the clearcoat and applied the clearcoat are tougher for me to notice. I would love tips for dealing and with these patxh up jobs as they are becoming more common with the economy going in the direction it’s going.
Hey Brian, very informative video on clear coat! Seeing this video, it would be a cool idea to see how you approach each scenario and how you would protect each of them as well!
It's one thing to understand that there are different types of finishes but it's quite another to be able to identify them. How does one identify them? Call the manufacturer?
Reaching out … if you can actually speak to a live rep… is what I do. I spent. Few days at PPG Pittsburgh area to learn as much as I could about clear.
Tricoat is a midcoat that is associated with pearls or candy midcoats. You lay your base color then you mix pearl in with base clear as your pearl carrier and spray over your base for the effect, then you top clear. Kandy over metallic is three stage as well as you mix candy concentrate with base clear and spray over your metallic base then top clear
I spray a lot of clear coat, a lot of primers, paint, and clear as well as cerakote. There are so many brands of paint and clear now days and a lot of them a junk. Good clear and a good quality clear coat gun make all the difference. If you want a glass finish spray your two coats of clear of then before you spray your third coat on mix in about 10% reducer in with your clear for that last coat
A bit behind on your clips Brian, but must say that in typical Apex format, your explanation was thorough and detailed. I am anxious to view that follow up. Thx... Cal
Brian I would like to know more of the spray on ppf. Just bought a new cx5. My concern is the bottom of the front fenders and lower rear quarter panels. I had ppf put on the front bumper cover mirrors and part of the hood. Unfortunately Mazda does not put that textured finish on anymore. I did however put a layer of BC1. It is holding up well so far. The sun here in the south in July and august is a killer. Btw I purchased some cheap made in china mud guards. I had to put some gaffers tape on the edges as they are poorly finished. Temporary solution.
Forgive my left-handed scribble please! :)
😆😆😆😆
Thank you so much Brian! I welcome the deeper dives anytime.

Just curious Brian ; this future arsenal of sprayable PPF similar to the properties of plasti dip?
Same idea… different formulas
Using primer polish helps on single stage b4 coating?
It sure can, yes.
"101"...what is that?😂 Why not 102 or 163 or 457 instead? 🤦
