I rediscovered my 16mm f/2.8 using Acros and high ISO: really cool, vintage looking pictures are the pleasing result. fun.

I’ve actually enjoyed the 16mm 2.8 more than I enjoyed the 16mm 1.4 so far. The size and silence is so encouraging to shoot with.

@@ericrjennings I really enjoy your editing, the intro/outro B-roll, and your conversational style (I've always enjoyed that). I'm mulling a big camera upgrade and really appreciate your takes on the major players. Your recent thoughts on the Fujifilm medium format body was really helpful in shaping my own decision tree about that camera.

I should make a follow up on that camera. Here’s the long story short… awesome output but too heavy / slow for my needs. I’m more an m4/3, APS-C, or small FF shooter

@@ericrjennings I've had a chance to play with thr GFX100 and I love the output but needed a chiroparctor after using it. I'm kidding about the chiro part, but the weight of the body alone made me really appreciate a lighter system. The medium format cameras from Fujifilm are awesome, but you are going to get a workout if you use them.

I have the Fujifilm 16 F1.4 and I rarely shoot it wide open. If I have sufficient light, I shoot it at F8. I use it mostly for landscape photography, where I want almost everything in the frame in focus. So, I would most do the same if I had the Fuji 16 F2.8 lens.

    • @ericrjennings

Good point. The 16 1.4 for me would be about that DOF. At f/8, I’d take the smaller lens.

I’m rolling the dice today on the 16 2.8, a used copy i can return if i hate it. I’ve got the Viltrox 13… i honestly love everything about it except it’s a tad bulky to just throw into my purse. I also have the sigma 18-50 2.8 and it’s great overall…. But i keep wanting wider and again, something more pancake like (I’m a former Fuji x100 user and i also shot a Nikon with their TINY kit lens, why i can’t get a nice wide like either of these in the size for my Fuji xs20 feels silly). I have a feeling I’m
Going to be disappointed when it arrives, but hoping for some small wide solution.

I think the 16/1.4 is the obvious answer if you can deal with the size and noise. I love that lens but I don’t have any idea what to do with that focal length so I sold it. But the rendering is definitely magic.
I’m not into the new 1.4’s. I just can’t swing the price. If you’re chasing shallow dof you might as well just go FF for the price and size of those lenses. I’m sure they’re amazing just not for me.
I’ve currently got the Fujicron trio and I love the size, weight, price, build. I’m not going to say the output blows me away. But the image quality exceeds my photography skills.
Have you tried the 16-55? Love that lens too. But it’s a chunk. I found myself not taking a camera around because the whole package became too big. Hence the Fujicrons.

    • @ericrjennings
      @ericrjennings  2 роки тому +2

You nailed the dilemma. Get 1.4 and it’s too big. Fujicrons are perfect but not mind blowing.

I used to shoot a Nikon F100. I bought the camera (body only) used, from a local camera store. While pondering a lens choice, my eyes fell on a AF Nikkor 24mm f2.8D next to the camera. Realizing I’d never shot wide angle, I decided to give it a go. I spent about a year exclusively with that combination (I didn’t even have another lens), learning how to use the 24mm to best advantage. The first photo I ever licensed was made with that combo, shot on Kodak Tri-X 400, pushed to ISO 1200.

When I bought my 16 2.8 is was an obvious choice, I wasn't going 16 1.4 too heavy and expensive and really the same with 16-55, 16-80 sucks for video, after all I went with fuji to be light/less expensive. If I was buying right now I'd be looking hard at the sigma 16 or viltrox 13. TBH honest though the Sony 20 mm 1.8 is SO good its hard to pick up anything else

I guess if the lens was good value for money it’s worth it. But if it’s not cheap 2.8 almost don’t cut it anymore nowadays.

Is bokeh really important for a wide angle lens though? 2.8 is pretty plenty for my needs. We’re all so invested in getting the best bokeh that we forget what these lenses were made and designed for.

The 16/2.8 is wider than the 16/1.4. And it focuses almost as close. At close focus, tons of separation, as you’d expect. I personally like the bokeh of the Fujicrons. Their bokeh is smoother with less outlining than many of the “character lenses”. As an example, my 56/1.2 has lots of toneh, but it does not have good bokeh. Often I go out with my 16/2.8 on camera and 35/2 in my pocket. Both are small and both have smooth bokeh. When I buy the 10-24 (hopefully soon), I will likely also buy the 50/2 to tag along in my pocket.

@@ericrjennings thats basically why I'm currently holding on to my Fuji gear, if the x-h2 doesn't do it for me, I'm out. The problem is even if the camera is a powerhouse its still going to be relatively big and they are going to want 2K+ for it

The 16/2.8 has severe barrel distortion. It’s almost in fish eye territory. If you shoot Jpeg the camera does a good job correcting it. If you only shoot raw you may have a hard time correcting it.
