  • Just a short video of our dogs Niki, Zoey, and Hinky(aka Crazy Eyed Killa). This is the last video taken of Niki. She was 8 and a half years old. We were heartbroken to have to put her down on May 12, 2011. We miss her. Her sister misses her. She lasted over 13 months with her disease and we wished we could have kept her longer. The wheels helped immensely in keeping her happy. There is a definitive DNA test for this now available through the Canine Health Information Center: ofa.org/degene...

    Hi, glad they helped. Is your dog a German Shepherd? This cart was made by "Eddies Wheels". They are incredibly expensive at over 500 US dollars brand new. We were lucky enough to pick this one up used for 175. Let me know if I can help with anything else.

    My English Shepherd mix Jasper is headed towards the final stage - his back legs are completely paralyzed at this point and cross. We have a nice wheelchair from K-9 Carts East that luckily my vet lent me for free - another dog owner had donated it. Tonite he started barking at the air and acting distressed; we think he might be having his sight affected at this point, or maybe he has a bladder infection. It's been nearly a year, and we have really tried to do everything we can within our budget. I walk him a lot, I trim his fur on his hindquarters and feet, and make sure the calluses on his feet are not cracked or bleeding. But the barking tonite was weird, and for the first time he seemed distressed. I gave him half a Tramadol and it seemed to calm him and stop the behavior; I think I will have to take him to the vet soon. It's all about controlling symptoms at this point.

    My wife and I have an eleven year old shepherd with this and it’s breaking our heart. We’ve paid so much for her meds and nothing seems to work. She is pooping all over the house but she seems personality wise she is the same. I know I have to make the decision I just have a hard time doing it. She’s is my first dog and my kids love her. I hate this.

    I had to put my 10.5 yro boxer down this last friday due to this disease, started with the dragging of the back toe. His symptoms started about a year and half to 2 years ago, these last 6 months he just went down hill so fast. Its so hard to watch them give life their all when they have to focus so hard just to stay upright :( Thank you for putting your videos out there and making people aware of what they are dealing with.
    Our vet did tell us that there was nothing that he could do.

    Sorry to hear. I think it is a little different for everyone. It is a matter of how far you are willing to go. The dogs quality of life is definitely important, but when it starts affecting YOUR quality of life as well. With Niki it was when we had to clean her and her bedding everyday. It doesn't matter that you know it is the right thing to do, it is still a hard decision. Best wishes.

      I see this video was made years ago but obviously I stumbled upon it because my dog he’s going through this beginning stages I watched all your videos and this one labeled “the last” was hard for me to press play… and in seconds in I was a wreck grown man whimpering and knowing this is what’s to come... it’s hard to see a dog in good health otherwise such a happy dog... what a hard decision that we have to make
      God bless and hope all is well

      @@americanhighventures We are dealing with this now with our 14 yr old dog and the suck part is we are temp living in out 22ft camper until out house is done and it of course has steps. So it's hard for him going up and down and always has to be assisted but it's not to bad yet but I know it will get to that point soon. My In-Laws also help with letting them out every other weekend when we work and they have physical issues also. As much as I would love to try the cart etc. I just don't think that route will work for us in the situation we are in now. =(

    My GSD has DM. The hardest question I am facing right now is how do you know when its time. All I have heard is, quality of life. But what and when is that? My girl is 12 years old and can still walk somewhat.She is getting to the point where she needs help getting up and walking at times. The biggest problem is that she is starting to loose control of her bowels. She is still happy and still likes to play so she does have quality of life. How did you know when it was time for Niki?

    The good news is that stem cell procedures being used for arthritis and DM in dogs is yielding incredible results. Please pass the word along for people to check with their vets as to which vets are using this procedure. Videos on line are amazing and encouraging.

    Sorry to hear it. It is always a hard decision to make. This disease progresses at a pretty predictable rate, nutrition and daily exercise can maybe extend their quality of life by a few months if your lucky. The main thing is that you gave them the best life they could live.

  • @dbc1dc
    @dbc1dc  11 років тому

    I'm not sure where you are getting your information, but I had contacted the foremost authority on stem cells for animals in Southern California 2 years ago, and asked them bluntly how good were the results for DM. Their reply was, "not good".

    this is such a lousy disease. we are likely putting our German Shepherd, Boca, down tomorrow. He has lasted 11 or 12 months, with a cart similar to this one, although I wish we had this one, it looks much better. The quality of life thing is a big part of it too. It has been a long hard fought battle. I wish we could have done raw food diets and been better educated but Boca had urinary stone problems so we had to give him this prescription diet which is crap nutritionally.

    I'm sitting home instead of going to work this morning as my 13yr old Chihuahua has DM. Last night was the first time I was up with him as he was having tremors every time he inhaled. He couldn't settle down for more than a minute at a time. He was diagnosed with DM about 6 months ago. This morning was the first time he couldn't stand to defecate. My vet suggested anti-inflammatory drugs but they are hard on the liver. Does anyone have any experience with this?

    I must put down my Kala two days ago... :( she have a progressive CDRM from february. I helped her every day on moving, being with her and gently massage her. but two days ago , after dinner she was put down, because of Bloat (GDV) . I think GDV was result of mielopaty, because last part of her was paralized. .(((( She was 8yrs. The BEST DOG!

    All the videos that I saw on dogs with DM are still able to move around with their front legs...my GSD was completely paralyzed (front and back). She was showing mild signs of DM but her condition progressed rapidly. Within a month, she went from walking on 4 legs to completely paralyzed in 24 hour. I had to rush her to the vet. After just less than a month later, she is now in her final stage...couldn't even lift up her head to drink. Her body became so stiff and she can only move her mouth and eyes...yesterday she was still able to eat on her own and bark despite being paralyzed...I couldn't stop crying...

      My 15 1/2 year old APBT seems to have this condition although the vet has said he must have a neurological condition because his organs all looked fine, he has not diagnosed him with DM. He's been staggering and dragging his hind toes here and there for at least a year. Over the past two months he has been completely paralyzed 3 times for a day or two each time. The same as your dog, not being able to lift his head. I give him ice chips but he eventually wants to go out to urinate. I put a diaper on him but he will hold it till he can get up again. This last time he recovered long enough to go out to relieve himself , drink a lot of water, then crash again. I'm not sure what to do next.

    @JamiePfef We had to have her euthanized last May. It starts to become a quality of life issue, both for the dog and the owner as the frequency of accidents becomes a bit unmanageable. Once we dialed in the cart, she loved it. She used it for about 7-8 months. She would still go after rabbits and other dogs!

    • @scatmav
      @scatmav 5 років тому

      dbc1dc may I ask how frequent the accidents were? I’m finding my gsd has them daily and my partner and I both work, come home and she’s jumped on the couch and urinated or she’s urinated whilst she sleeps and doesn’t realise it. Her back legs have been shaky for a good 1-2yrs now and we have seen them gradually get worse, she can’t walk for more than 5 mins at a time before she starts lagging too. Up to vets tomorrow with her so we shall see what they say

      Hi Agnieszka, thank you she was:) We tried to make sure she took care of business before putting her into the cart. On the occasional time she did defecate, it was easy to clean up, or if you are fast you could put a bag under and catch it!:)

  • @UnTamedZoroark

    My dog has this. Can you help me by telling me what brought you to the decision to put her down? My Bodie can walk, but its hard. He still eats, and can make it outside to use the bathroom, but its VERY hard for him. He still eats, and seems to be in good spirits. Occasionally, he suffers from seizures...which is why I am up this late now because he has one.
    Im so very torn on what to do. My mind tells me that as long as he eats, and goes to the bathroom then I will do whatever I have to do to make it easy for him. :(

    • @dbc1dc
      @dbc1dc  9 років тому

      Noah W Sorry to hear Noah. As far as the decision goes, it is different for everyone. It is just a matter of how far you are willing to go in caring for them. With DM their mind and spirit usually are fine throughout the course of the disease, which is what makes it such a hard decision. As long as you line their bed with large garbage bags(for accidents) and don't mind doing laundry every day, they can last over a year beyond the initial symptoms of the disease. Ultimately it just becomes a quality of life issue not only for them but you as well. Best of luck.
