You mention that you would want gas? And talked about the negatives of having to carry bottle adapters around Europe... Did you mean diesel heating???
I for one want nothing to do with propane tanks. Diesel heater combo like a Truma 6D maybe even 6DE with the electric hookup possibilities to not rely on diesel fuel when hooked up to shore power.
Another great alternative is to do LPG conversion. Many European countries have LPG for around 75c to 1€ and it's easily accessible.
However with diesel, it's simple - you always need fuel to drive and thus as long as that tank has diesel you also have heat. Plus with 3.5T Cat B license limitations in place, you don't need two 11kg (empty) bottles which actually weigh about 48kg when full. One small Campingaz bottle that's 5kg will last you a long time for just cooking.

I probably didn’t say it clearly. I meant to say that if you have propane, you’d need to make sure to have the adaptors that fit whatever country you’re in.
I had the canisters from Germany and went to refill in France, but essentially couldn’t without the adaptor or I needed to buy a whole new canister. If I had bought another in France, I’d take it to Germany and need the reverse adaptor.
That was just one time. If I went all the time, I’d just buy the adaptors and carry them with me as they are small.
I found that when heating the water and campervan with diesel it took a bit longer and gave off a distinct odor. For those reasons I’d prefer propane. From a quick calculation on the cost, the difference was insignificant in Europe so that wasn’t a determining factor.
But I must say that I hadn’t needed to do refills practically because they come full with the rentals. The convenience of having a diesel heater that uses the fuel already in the tank is great like you mentioned.

@@hudsoncrew if you are building your own camper, skip propane altogether. Get a small Campingaz stove top cooker or a induction plate inside the van that will work on hookups at camp sites. No propane inspections needed, no bottles to carry around with you... More tare weight you can have on board.
I took have rented a few campers from Roadsurfer and I have a general idea... No Ducato, ever.

Interested how you get three kids in there? I’ve a Knaus 600XL (virtually the same) and need to modify for 3 belted seats. 🧐

@@duncangibson9235 how do you like that van? The shower for me has me worried because the tambourine doors on the T5-T6 California have been problematic.
I also wondered how the 3rd child got along with no belts.

@@duncangibson9235 We took this one nearby. The longer trips we took 5 seaters or traveled with a 4 seater and car.
