NS 73X Idling, Crew Change, And Departure

- Train: NS 73X (Shelocta, PA to Ashtabula, OH)
Power:
NS SD70M-2 2764
NS SD70M-2 2704
Length: 119
The SD70M-2 pair returns after assisting another train east and gets a track authority back into the secondary and then stops for a crew change. Soon, the fresh crew takes the power down to the train and reconnects and takes a while for an air brakes test. Once the test was complete and an eastbound cleared the switch, 73X had the all clear to proceed west. - Авто та транспорт
My son is an Engineer-in-Training on Norfolk Southern Railroad. I am just amazed by how the men run these massive machines safely and skillfully. God Bless all of them.
I'm amazed at the radio chatter being as much as a commercial airline jet.
uh,huh,PooP rules ,uh,huh,cool
it's something to see. But nothing moves until the Guy on the ground says so. God's Blessing for sure! but safety first.
timmyg2 - I wish him the best of luck.
Its the future.
My son was just made to engineer and he really likes his job. I am so proud of him.
Congrats to your son, I wish him the best of luck in his career.
Nice Job I had couple trains that have crew changes. great patience to complete the crew change on camera.
great patience to complete the crew change on camera
One time I waited like a whole hour for just 1 crew change.
as a railroader i have to say nice video and i read the comments, you couldn't have explained them better!! keep on rail fanning
Thank you! I try my best to explain what goes on, I even hope to someday work the railroad myself... someday :)
+TheNSrailfan i hope that you do get hired in one day, you'll be very valuable to whatever railroad you endeavor to work for.
You can tell how well they love their job.
World's biggest & Best Railway American Railway Love From Pakistan 🥰
My favorite type of engine, the SD70M-2
One of my favorites, I definitely like the EMD's
Brilliant coverage... MUCH APPRECIATED...
Thank you, you're welcome
Are both engines running
The engineers don't wave from the trains anymore, not like they did back in 1954!
Some still do, though doesn't seem to be as often anymore.
a train sitting and a crew change. wow major excitement lol
David Anderson kml
I laughed so hard when I saw "poop RULES graffitied on the tunnel lol
Me too 😂
THANK YOU FOR SHARING
Thanks for watching!
Nothing like the sound of turbocharged EMD 710! no thanks to Caterpillar....
fantastic work
Thank you!
Thanks
See the crease under the lights and in the center of the horse? GE only has a crease at the top of cab. means Emd has more attention to detail. also floor board light is same style as SD's and GP's of 70's means more heritage. just saying..
john diesel ---- BS
Never seen an entire train of Southern cars. That's not bad at app
Nice Job I had couple trains that have crew changes
Almost as sleep inducing as watching golf. But look at all of those SOU gons! Wonder how manu are still with us.
Gotta love those EMDs.
Absolutely, the best out there
I LOLED to that graffiti at 1:23
Nice video NSrail
How long does a person train so they can drive one of these big puppies? thanks for the video.
6 weeks in training center, 3 months in hiring terminal, and then 90 day probation i believe.
This where my cousin works at in that region of Virginia!
Enjoyed the video. I suppose that coal cars (compared to other types) get so little graffiti is because they generally move in unit trains and don't sit for long periods in big city yards (where spraypaint vandals seem to lurk) or in desolate industrial sidings. Doubt if there are many taggers in coal mining areas, or on big power plant properties. Surprised to see so many "Southern" cars some 35 years after the merger with N&W to form NS.
Nice video!
NORFOLK SOUTHERN.....BABY
WAOOOOO great video
2704 looks to be burning some oil from that blue smoke coming out of the exhaust stack
+Dylan Ruppert Injector problem or overhaul needed?
I'm thinking it might be burning oil because thats the only reason I can come up with for the reason its producing blue smoke but I could be wrong
In college, for a year, I lived across the street from a small yard that locals used. They always kept a few older locomotives there and they would smoke something awful when first started. A few years later I met an engineer that worked out of that yard, so I asked him. He told me the main thing he always came across was worn turbo seals.
This really looks like burnt oil (just a bit), but could be any number of seals/rings. My guess would be the turbo, though. Bad rings and you could possibly wind up with a "runaway."
This process is mind boggling. 20+ minutes to change crews? Detaching the engines from the train and then having to hook them up again?
+Cats01 When changing crews they have lots of paperwork to go over with the new crew. They have track bulletins to compare and the new crew must inspect the power making sure everything is okay before they may continue. The engineer must check for any broken or malfunctioning equipment on the locomotives and must report it as soon as possible.
The engines had to be detached and the train tied down so they could help shove a train east, then they had to come back and reattach to their train and do a brake test since the engines had been detached.
You would think the previous crew would tell the new one about any issues.
AWESOME!!!😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈
15:17 - One of the engineers names is called "Randall".
Good stuff 👍
Great catch!!!
Wow amazing👍👍👍
Thank you
@@TheNSrailfan okey
Sounds like the engines are revving high for an idle.
Nice video 👍🇺🇸
Thank you
Awesome video!
Thank you
Great video. 14:57. Loving the sweat pants lol
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it.
No problem!
Good money right there except you are never home!
nice video
Thank you
New to channel and railfan vids. For some reason i like norfolk southern must be the horse logo.
Super
I just subscribed to your channel.
Thank you
Now both engines are New York and Susquehanna Western
7:22 Anyone know why the engineer didn't try to stop just beyond the white line over the asphalt pavement to make their step-down/step-up with their grips a little easier for each respective crew?
Schönes Video!
Danke schon!
Not sure why you didn't edit out the 15min of idling time, but whatever.
Some like to listen to the engines idle
That a lot cars to be in sitting that side track
Who the fuck ruined that awesome tag spot with fucking "poop rules"
Blowing blue smoke? Probably needs a lot of service.
+Cats01 "There are a number of reasons why engines will blow blue smoke, but assuming the correct oil is used, the main culprit behind the problem is oil burning in the cylinders. It only takes a tiny amount of oil to produce blue smoke from the exhaust. Some engines have been known to continue running strong for thousands of kilometres even burning small amounts of oil. That said, once an engine develops an appetite for oil, often the only way to rectify the problem is to repair the failed internal components." - www.berrimadiesel.com/home/smoke-signals/
Could be not fully warmed up. My diesel blows blue smoke until its warm. Its pretty normal for a diesel engine
Great video....
Thank you
2764 needs a bath
What camera do you use
Sony Handycam, HDR CX-190
Who Had The Whistler At 0:34
whats with the blue smoke on the second unit?
WHAT ARE THOSE WHITE POLES/PIPES THEY CARRIED ON AND OFF?
That metal pole is a brake stick and is used to turn the handbrake. It can be used to either release or apply the handbrake from the ground. Making the task of tying down rail cars safer and more efficient.
www.surf-prep.com/brake-sticks.html
How come one loco is smoking more than the other?!?!
The one may have a little oil leaking into the engine and is burning it off.
Mike Duross ANDYAYCOCK
White smoke from a Diesel engine.........not good.
is it me or the locomotives designed different than those of CSX and the other companies? And if so are they made by different companies?
This is a pair of SD70M-2's built by EMD, CSX has/had a very similar in appearance SD70ACe also built by EMD. The M-2 is DC powered, and the ACe is AC powered. When two different railroads buy the same model it is still possible to notice small details that are different as some railroads may request specific features.
@@TheNSrailfan also something else I've noticed.Norfolk Southern is the only company I see whose engineers flash the bottom lights as they come to crossings.I was told they are called ditch lights.
What is the "cable" which was leaved on the front door of the 2764?
That's actually a brake stick. A long pole with a hook on the end so crews can apply and release hand brakes safely from the ground.
What is the purpose of the white pole
To tie/untie brakes
Where is this?
Just outside Saltsburg, PA

Of course the very first thing I notice when the video starts is the graffiti.
Why is 2704 smoking more than 2764?!?
It may possibly have a bad gasket and be burning off some oil indicated by the blue smoke.
2704 has a much stronger addiction to smoking than 2764
2 70M-2's reporting for duty dependable and durable
dblkrailfan ....except they are smoking like a SOB!
We need more trains and less people🚥🚥🚥🚥🚥🚥
No
That locomotive shouldn't be smoking like that something is wrong with it
I noticed that too! Wow!
Ever hear of "Turbo Lag"?
+TheNSrailfan
Nice video. Question: What's with the metal pole at 21:55?
Thanks.

Jesus their track authorities take forever to copy
Most TA's to maintainers take less than 5 minutes to copy. When swapping crews they still have paperwork to over and equipment inspection.
I'm a conductor , I realize that. Was saying the procedure they have for copying track authorities and warrants take a while to copy
what did I just watch
Nice video!

It does on the NS with their sh-- bags.
