Awesome video! I play at church and definitely toms are huge in worship songs , thanks for those really cool beats , so cool to see one of my favorite drummers (you) play gospel too ! 🔥
Seeing gabe dressing and teaching a top notch church drumming course is hilarious and humbling, especially after seeing him bake cookies on stage in my hometown. I love you all!!!
I fell in love with Tom riffs firstly, I believe. It's soo cool to see this get focused on. I'll be on it in my lessons! DBO was totally the the right thing to do! When you kicked in the tempo, I suddenly got down with the sickness to.😄🤘
This is all information I’ve had to learn through feel. I’ve been playing in church for 7 years now and all of this is vital information for drummers that are working on dynamic and “feeling out” the song and atmosphere. I’ll be showing this video in our worship development class next week. Great information
My thoughts exactly! I'm a drummer that tends to play guitar and lead worship these days so I don't get to work at kit too often. I have felt my way to some of this, but this video just made it all so easy! Thanks team!
I don't usually comment on stuff but I've got to say, I love your content, it's simply super helpful and direct, and as a church drummer myself, this was just awesome to watch! Thank you so much for this kind of content, I really hope to enroll in your course in the future, then again, thank you a lot for this!😄
this was easily one of the most helpful videos i've watched for learning drums. thanks for this, i'm definitely looking to join when money isn't so tight
Thanks for the creative approach to playing these types of church grooves. Certainly helpful as I serve in the worship ministry playing 5 services every week.
I completely agree with your hypothesis on why toms are some emphasized as apposed to cymbals. Though I’ve never thought about it until this lesson. Love the channel brother. 👊🏽
Bass player (and lover of drums) here... Great video! I've played to these kinds of beats many times in worship sets, but never thought about the idea behind it. Also, "Worship Tom" sounds like that could be the guy who's older than everyone else in the band because he's been at the church forever..... 😁 (I'll see myself out)
Hey Mark! I'm fairly new to playing drums in a band, and particularly with a bass player. What are some things you work on with your drummer? And how do you communicate with him/her while playing? (As a drummer, it's hard to signal when your hands and feet are occupied). Thanks!
If y'all like these type of lessons, don't hesitate to join! I'm a member and usually don't advertise stuff in comments, but this is an exception. People are really helpful over there and of course the lessons are fantastic!
thank u i havent tried this out yet but i think this will help me a lot. ive been feeling like im lacking on the tom side of drumming so thanks i think this will definitely help in church :)
This makes a lot of sense. These beats sound very similar to the beat for the song “Audition” in Bare: A Pop Opera, which is set in a catholic school (I think it’s catholic). Thanks for the lesson! Very informative!
This is really good. Will have to get the Tom's from the office as only been using hi-hat, snare and bass drum. I also only use my left hand so will see what beats I can adapt for that.
As one of the drummers on my church's worship team I am all to familiar with these style tom groves. The real fun ones are when we play songs in 3/4 time. It used to be the bane to my existence but I love 3/4 now 😅
I’m just getting back into drumming (practicing at home with Roland TD-17). It’s been about 15 years since I played drums and would like to get back to drumming at church. This was super helpful as the music in church today is a little different than 2006
You are on it! The best is, when you can start to incorporate your rudiments into lessons like this, 👍 it is absolutely the right choice that you are making here. 😀
Thank you for this; I am going to show this to others who are learning the drum (I know of one). Also, this cheered me up after having a mental breakdown earlier on
Church drummer!! Post the toms to fill in the atmosphere. Also gives a sense of authority during very spiritual moments. Quick Tom breaks really make that worship a good intense experience!
Great lesson. Personally I cannot stand how often worship music goes to a toms beat. I get called to play for a local church a few times a months and anytime I come to a song that has a tom grove I try to replace it with a more traditional beat. Some times you cant get away with it, but luckily for me the band leader doesn't hire me to play whats on the record. They prefer for me to put my spin on it and it's nice. Glad to have this lesson around for folks looking to expand their play books. Cheers!
How are the toms tuned, and how much low end do they have in em...Worship Drums, especially should be full, warm, and deep with plenty of 200 K Punch in the lower registers! Also, that snare should be at least medium to perferably medium low.
Loved the video. Everyone is very helpful. Always something new an exciting. Make sure you get on the list everyone. This is my second year. And I love it. Male sure you get on the list everyone. Gabe is amazing. I do have a question on the lifetime enrollment? It says $250 off for it. But when I click on it, it still says $500. Would I only be charged the $250, or the full amount? I would love to be enrolled for life.
We love having you at DBO Academy! You're a constant stream of positivity and I love it! $500 was the old lifetime account price, it's now $750 since we've added so much to the website since then! So you can get $250 off the $750 price point if that makes sense. However, we can prorate your account for any unused time of your yearly account if you wanted to make the upgrade! Hope that makes sense! If you have any more questions we're happy to help you out at support@drumbeatsonline.com
@@DrumBeatsOnline OK. Thank you for the information. That did make sense. I hope to try an get, to that mark and get the lifetime enrollment before it passes. Either way I look at it. I'm still glad to be apart of an amazing drummer an teacher. And such wonderful students and staff. Keep up all the work everyone.
Amazing video! Thanks for providing this information. This tom groove is very common in church music, however does it have a specific name other than tom groove? I’m curious to know what traditional beat it originated from.
Love your Channel very easy to follow even for a beginner. Since I am a beginner sometimes I spend too much time trying to figure out the sticking is there any way you could put L and R over the notes? Keep up the great work my go-to drunk channel
I love "For All You've Done" and "Worthy Of All Praise" for the quicker stuff. Mostly a Foo Fighters/Simple Minds kinda groove. And the slower stuff? "Grace Awaiting Me" and "How Great Thou Art". Chance to use bongos, shakers etc. And a Phil Collins fill on Grace (see the opening to PCs I Don't Care Anymore) and driven snare a la Cranberries Zombie on How Great (yes really).
Great videos! New subscriber here. I recently started playing drums at church. This video gives me lot of great information how to play toms better for worship songs. Thank you
I started playing early CCM (Jesus Music) in the 70s and was the lead (and often only) drummer at a large church's contemporary services since 1998. (We now have a younger guy rotating with me.) Tom-based grooves are a relatively recent phenomenon that I noticed starting to appear with more frequency in the last 6 or so years. Frankly, I think the change has less to do with musicality and more to do with expanding click usage that freed up the drums from having to provide a solid time reference. Or maybe all us old dinosaurs who had strong 2&4 rock roots are dying off. :)

I would like him to do a Baptist church Grove. It's alot of cymbals and rides. Toms are to gloomy and rock.

more grace

Totally agree!

"King of Kings" by Bethel is a GREAT song to practice this with. Has these exact beats. Thanks for the lesson!
Super helpful! My Tom game at church is definitely my weakest link! My cymbals over ride everything a lot so good to learn using the toms as cymbals
