I did this with an empty vintage palette that held quarter pans. The cut off stick fit in the little pans perfectly. It is one of my favorites to travel with.
I did this, too, with a vintage cigarette case and ¼ pans, to protect the case from too much water. I use DS wc stick slices and paint dot samples from various handmade paint makers. So fun.
Well, this was a big “Duh!” slap my forehead awakening. One minute I couldn’t imagine what I would do with watercolor sticks, and now I can’t imagine how I have missed the obvious! So simple, so easy.
Yes - in a humid environment, like Sydney Australia, if not sealed, they can absorb moisture and become soft. This is fine if you plan to cut them up or put into a palette, but if drawing with them it is important to keep them sealed up. (Less important in an air conditioned environment.)
I love how it looks, have you used one for a longer period of time? I’d imagine the paint area could get pretty messy. Never thought about putting sticks in a palette like that!
I don't tend to use it much, and when using it, I do it with care so the paint area stays clean. You need to be a tidy painter with a palette set up this way 😉

What a gorgeous piece! And I love how you gave it new life. Thank you for sharing 🎨

They are effectively pre-dried watercolour. Very convenient for travel if you may need to top up a palette too.
BRAVO JANE !! GREAT IDEAS !! ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
I love the sticks!
I love this idea ❤
Me too!
I was not aware that the Daniel Smith watercolour sticks absorbed moisture. Thanks for letting us know.

So helpful many thanks for sharing.
Thank you for sharing. 💚
I guess it’s a cigarette holder. I have one beautiful Soviet box similar to this!
Yes it is - a far better use for it I think!!

I thought about this when I saw sticks next to a filled half pan. "Wait, isn't that the same thing?"
First!
