My friend just got one not too long ago and tbh the mic is completely horrible. I could barely hear him but I can hear all background noise clearly. He had a stealth 600 before and did say the sound is a lot better.
after your video I went out and bought a pair of the platinums. they sound INCREDIBLE! they sound almost as good as my 7.1 cinema system. thanks for sharing dude.
Thanks for the review. Question about the sound quality: You mention lows, but that's not really a selling point for me. What about the highs? Midrange? Soundstage/headroom? How well can you hear fine details? This is what creates "immersion," not signal-distorting faux bass, a la Beats. Does the extra low end come from better materials and frequency response or is it from an artificially created EQ tweaking? If I'm going to spend about double price on a new headset, I want it to sound objectively better, ie. more accurate. Saying the Gold sounds "flatter" is an odd way to say it's worse, since in terms of audio, "flat" generally means better sound. Of course, it all comes down to frequency response.
This is exactly how I feel, did you end up buying the platinum, and if so, what did you think? I actually thought the sound on the gold was fantastic, clear with no bass distortion, and was a selling point for me. This guy ranting about better bass has me worried.
How come people say the golds have bad audio quality. I use my for all my audio needs and the sound is fantastic. I like the gold so much I use them over my audio technica ath-m40x.
Well if you go from a actual studio headset which are made to provide the best sound, compared to a gaming headset that mostly uses outdated drivers and are mainly using their name to grab some extra cash, you could see how some people would call the audio bad. Like I personally have the beyerdynamic DT990 pro 250 Ohm and I'm pretty sure both the platinum AND gold will sound worse by a large margin, but in trade for that you get a wireless headphone that has a microphone.
RedPillorBluePill I kept mine pretty nicely. The first signs of the hinges breaking is a line going straight through the middle of the hinges. After that the band eventually just wears down
Got a gold for Christmas last year but the hinges broke last week so I was thinking about getting a platinum to replace it and now I know I will for sure
The hinges was my main problem with the Gold, I'm really glad to hear the Platinum seems to have gotten that part right. The battery life just makes me want to upgrade even more, plus better sound and mic quality are icing on the cake for me. This video confirmed my decision to get them, thanks a lot!
dont' drop them 1 foot onto carpet..... or they'll get the cracks you see people complaining about and you wont' have any audio anymore, they'll be useless. lol.... and yes the Elites were kinda heavy.
I doubt it, the Pulse feature sounded like junk to me and it's a waste on the battery. They're prolyl still 200~ cause they're the only ones with a headphone jack on the dongle as well.
I had the Gold for a couple of years, and I loved them at first, but they didnt last long before they started breaking. They finally became unusable in Octoboer of 2016 after taping the plastic headband for a few months prior. Once the first crack popped up, more started popping up after until I had the entire headband wrapped in tape. Then shortly after the right hinge gave out. Since I primarily play on my Xbox One, I went with the Astro A40 TR. While I love them, its not the ideal situation to have to unplug the USB and Optical cable and hook them up to each system, so I was looking at getting another Gold Headset. This video convinced me to pay the extra $60 to jump up to the Platinum.
Nice video man. You almost had me sold on the platinum until you mentioned that surround doesn't work on the pc. I appreciate that tho, I would have been irritated to buy them and then find out that surround doesn't work.
I just got the Gold's a few days ago and they are absolutely perfect. The Surround sound works great on my PS3 for Netflix and Gaming. I don't think I would spend that extra money.
Same ear cup material? Crap! I have the gold version and the ear cup cover material started peel off in less than an year. After it started to peel, I had to remove all the "cloth" myself because of the mess it caused (small pieces of black cloth everywhere). Even the blue padding underneath the headband started to peel off. Ps. And the same thing happened with the previous version (the one for the PS3).
I think channels need to remind people you have warranty so if you don't like them, return them. Or if they have an issue. I did read in some Amazon reviews that some people are getting a buzzing noise which isn't normal which means you have to have them replaced. It sucks to go through it all but complain about it and Amazon is always good and will add a little something like a voucher if it really is an issue to send them back and stuff.
I broke my Gold headset around Christmas so far the past month I have been using my iPhone earbuds which is horrendous for playing games. My local game shop just got stock of the Platinum headset. Will be picking it up in the morning.
Just bought another Gold for $69.99 so this is a $90 difference now and based on reports of mic issues, static and wireless channel drop outs I've seen abroad and in the Playstation forums I just cancelled my Plat order. Same issues that the golds had when released for the PS3. The Golds were horrible until they could be applied for the PS4 then they worked like buttercream icing. I'll probably revisit these when the bugs are gone, price drops, etc. I just don't want to go through what I did with the Golds when they first came out.
Hey Tim Anderson, you mentioned that you purchased another Sony gold ps4 headset? What Happened to your previous Sony gold headset, did they crack as well. Btw tnks 4 the info about the mic.
Tim, lol I haven't known anyone to have the Sony gold ps4 headset for 2yrs without any breakage/crack in the headset, especially at the folding area. I was annoyed because I'm a person who takes care of my items. Fortunately I brought them from best buy with geek squad protection. Had I didn't, that's 400.00 plus dollars. So that's why I rather wait until someone has the platinum version for at least 4 months.
Thanks for the video! I wanted to get gold in store today but it was out of stock. So I took platinum don’t regret it at all! After watching your review. The guy at the store told me there’s no difference 🤷🏼♂️
Sorry for my English. I have them both, gold and platinum and i am really disappointed with sound of platinum. Bass respond is terrible, it's even worse than on gold. And i really hate that cheap plastic buttons on side. When i am moving my head its making clicky noise, it's really annoying. For me platinum isn't worth extra money at all.
Denis Sulovic meine leiblingsheadset ist platinum headset. Das ist sehr gut. Auch uncharted 4 ist sehr gut on platinum headset. Sorry for my bad German im english
They both sound excellent, but do not last long! I have both and in both the plastic hinges broke! Two pairs of gold and one platinum! And I did treat them very gentle after the first gold one broke! Is a pity, they sound great! Looking for alternative. !
Got the platinum in the mail yesterday, tested out for a couple of hours and so far so good. Soundwise it's comparable to my sennheiser HD 598 (my baseline to compare to other cans) and sounds more like a GSP 300 (which is also great on its own), while not as clear and airy as the senns, one of which is open, it does sound pretty close (the mids and highs are a tad muddier though). Not being a bass head the platinum sounds OK to me in that departement, not overly bassy, not overly recessed, a bit less balanced than the senns overall but not fatiguing in the long run. Now the main feature i bought this for is the 3D audio, even if it's quite limited in scope right now given the small amount of games that support it (and let's be honest here, it should not be limited to just the expensive platinum cans, being a HRTF algorithm processed by the console itself...). I fired up uncharted 4 for the testing and i must say i'm impressed. Positionnal cues are spot on with the added benefit of being able to tell the sound source's actual elevation and distance, something that does not work so well with traditionnal 7.1 simulation. In other games the VSS is good, though not as good as the GSX 1000 which, with the excetpion of 3D audio (and good old EAX), blows away the competition when it comes to simulated surround. Did not have the occasion to test the microphone yet, but i suspect that the quality is satisfacory.
so i kinda wanna get the platinum but the thing is, how does the audio sound for music because I want to get this mainly for gaming but I also want it to sound decent or good for music, and how does the bass sound for music
Lots of people were complaining about the gold's frame, hinges breaking, usually lasting 2-5 months (like stated in the video). If you want your headphones to last longer, go for the platinum.
I bought a Gold headset last year and returned it when folks I played with said the mic quality was horrible and they preferred the mic on my old Sony PS3 headset. So I've continued using the PS3 headset that I have held together with duct tape. It's good to hear that the mic quality is improved for the Platinum. Thanks for the review and especially the mic test. For some reason, mic quality doesn't get a lot of attention from some headset reviewers. So thanks.
no problem, I try to always include it on gaming headsets because some people base their decisions on what the mic sounds like where there are some people that don't care at all about the mic
the playstation gold are trash, I've had the playstation gold and silver. I treated them very well, and they both just broke for no reason. on my silvers I stopped hearing sound in one ear, and that's when I replaced them. with my golds which I treated way better the Bluetooth just stopped working, completely no connection no sound no nothing. the wire worked for about a week and then then I couldn't hear anything no matter what I tried. all " playstation " headsets suck. I'm sure the platinum are just ans bad as the last 2 playstation headsets
Saw your vid on a website I go to daily. I like how honest you were, I'm definitely picking up the Platinum Headphones with my PS4. Just subbed and I'll be looking at more of your videos
thanks so much, I appreciate that. if you don't mind me asking what site was the video on?i get people that see my stuff all over but I never know where
they look the same but different price and different sound quality, I've been using the gold headset since last year but I think I'm going to grab my upgrade today, thanks for reviewing platinum :)
I like the gold although the mic is absolutely terrible even with the chat all the way up my friends can barley hear me i would just buy a turtle beach
The Gold Wireless Headset has always had the mic button stop working for me. I treat my headset extra good. I really care about my stuff. I've had to swap them (still in warranty) twice because of this issue and now the white ones I got have the same issue. I stopped using them because I have wired Sony headphones for my phone (£70) and they have a WAY better mic. Everyone tells me they sound so clear and I don't even have to talk loud at night for them to hear me which is good for my house mates.
E agora , qual HEADSET compro ? nunca tive um headset bom mesmo , sempre esses baratinho , quero um bom pra jogar , os dois são bonitos , o preço do Platinum no ML é 800 MT caro , nem sei ainda .
Quality video man. Been looking for a headset to replace my Golds and have been waiting a long time for the Platinums. Seems like a perfect upgrade for me. I dont need them to be compatible with anything other then my PS4 and i like it neat without a base station and lots of cables. Even though a lot of people think they are expencive I think you have to spend a lot more on other wireless headsets to get the same quality sound.
I've had the problem of the cracking around the sides for years and have finally bothered to look up a review on the plat headset because I thought it would just have the same crappy plastic as the gold but I am impressed that they bothered to do something about it and so I am definitely going to get it when money is good.
thumbs up for this review, just got the platinum and it's worth it,, the sound is great both for gaming and music and as for comfort it's fine for me nothing i can say, thanks gamesky really appreciate your review...
Magneira not really....I like both and I just personally like the sound better on the Platinum. so this is really just a perfect example of a guy giving his personal opinion
Thanks for the video but I want to clear up your misunderstanding of the virtual surround. It is not done physically so the amount of space inside the cups for your ears has nothing to do with it. It's purely software, it can be done with earbuds. Little differences are applied to the sounds, since something in front of us sounds differently based off of the way it bounces off of our earlobes compared to annoys that would be behind us. It also adds delays, typical stereo only has audio coming out a single Channel to simulate noise on that side, whereas virtual surround would have the noise louder in the side it is supposed to be on, as well as milliseconds earlier. Which is how our brain figures out where sounds are coming from in real life.
yo the gold on its own is already stunning with music music is super hgh quality and you can hear everything perfect in games its also perfect wouldnt see why the gold could be a bad option if anyone might be thinking that
Just bought these and was testing them out on youtube and neflix. Personally, I thought the sound quality was ok. I own a pair of Bose headphones & Beats, and in my honest opinion the richness of overall sound + bass doesn't even come close to those two other headphones. Now that said, I haven't tried Uncharted yet, or just gaming in general, as I more or less just wanted to make sure they were working out of the box, so I'll have to see how they work out for gaming. The build quality is definitely a step up from the Golds, but they do have some weak spots where longevity will be something to see over time.
Gamesky I tried the headphones out with Uncharted and your right, this game in particular sounds incredible with these headphones. Note to those looking to buy them as kind of a universal headset for movies and watching youtube videos in betwwen gaming, honestly don't expect much there, but no argument when it comes gaming sound, you won't be disappointed.
Man, you should have much more subs, you're reviews are so freakin complete, but the strange thing on those headsets, is that two of my friends have the golds, and they use them in the PS4 and the mic sounds much better ...
I appreciate that that's weird. i wanted to record audio straight from the PS4 so people could here what it would sound like from the system....both mics are not great
I returned the Platinum for some Astro A50 3rd gen.....now the sound quality was amazing on the platinum, the problem I had was the rubber headband part. After 30 mins of gaming I would start really feeling the rubberband pressing down on my head.
Great review. One thing that i would recall on is the sound quality which kind of seamed to be distinctive on the gold rather the platinum was just right, not great.
thank you so much for your review i'm are really interested to get one of those as soon as possible because I have never played a game with the headphones and for me the sound quality is very important! Thank you so much for your help
The golds sound quality and comfort is very good . I use the golds over my audio technica ath-m40x. Sound is very rich, full and bass is solid, very nice and balanced. And the platinum does not work wirelessly with ps3.
Platinum Connect wirelessly to your PS4™ and personal computer. Connect to a PlayStation®VR headset or mobile device with the included 3.5mm audio cable. Gold no cant used on VR!!
@@kaveson101 no , unfortunately they were out of stock then , so i bought the Turtlebeach 6000 , and honestly they have like 4 seperate modes for clear voice , full bass etc , super human hearing where you can hear the enemy footsteps in game , they are really good 8 mnths in , working perfectly .
I own both for years now and I use the golds 90% of the time . They are the cheaper pair but sound better , I mean a lot. Better IMO . Both are top tier and you can’t good wrong ..Oh I also have the platinum dual mic. I don’t mind speaking with ppl not over them , plus the golds can be adjusted to be louder then you’ll even need a mic to be. oh the platinum are bass heavy , insanely bass heavy. Sony’s attempt at dual shock headphones. So with the bass and tight fit (and I’m only hat size 7) they are too much. The golds I put on and never have to think adopt them
Hey GameSky, thanks a lot for the video, very informative. I'm currently thinking about buying either the Platinum HeadSet or the Astro 50 3gen. I have currently the Gold Headset, which I use for the PS4 Pro and the PC, although I mostly game on PC. I was planning to buy the Platinum Headset to substitute my Gold Headset, and also because I have the Playstation VR and the Platinum have been designed to be plugged directly on the VR. But i've heard that, when used on PC, the Platinum Headset only provide STEREO sound, with NO virtual 7.1 surround at all. On the contrary, the Astro A50 do that, but do not work as straightforward when using the Playstation VR, needing aditional cables. Is this true? How are the Platinum when you use them for PC Gaming? Are the A50 better for that? Which one do have better positional audio? Thanks a lot in advance!
Great video! I really appreciate it. I was wondering if you've found a way to get rid of my own voice echoing in the platinum headset. Also, I feel "ear fatigue" after using my platinum headsets for a while. Do you experience this as well?
I really hate everybody who comments that these things are terrible. I understand when there's a legit concern, but every single review for every single headset I've looked up has people crapping all over them, and it really makes deciding which ones to buy that much harder.
Thanks for your Input been waiting on a good comparison as I was looking for a New Headset as My GTA Pulse Battery Life is terrible these days. I'd be lucky if I got 3 Hours out of them...! You've helped me make my mind up!
Unoriginal DnA _ I personally think the Sennheiser GSP 300 and the HyperX Cloud Core is a better upgrade and under $100. I'm using the Skullcandy PLYR 1 and absolutely love thise
Liked and Subscribed. Fantastic review, Thank you. I own the Gold headset and the build quality is horrible. Hinges broke within months and I had to tape the entire plastic band to keep it from falling apart. Time to get the platinum then
Now THIS is a review. Told me everything I wanted to know (and more). Headphones pre-ordered. Thanks, man!
Chris C thanks so much, I'm glad the video helped. you won't be disappointed

So glad to see a comparison video that actually addresses the Gold headset weak hinge point. I'm glad the Platinum stepped it up.
One of the best comparison videos I've seen, good job my man!
Thanks for the review. Question about the sound quality:

Great review! Answered both my questions in terms of how comfortable the Platinum headset is compared to the Gold. I think I'll upgrade this week.

U found charging the gold a lot after 7 hrs of battery life??!!! Cuh HOW MUCH U BE PLAYING!!!!!!!???
I was going to pick-up a set of Gold's but found out the Platinum was coming out. This vid answered all the questions I had, thank you! :)
Jerome Maharaj no problem, and you won't be disappointed with the Platinum
Very nice review. The best i saw
thanks so much, I appreciate that
I bought a Gold headset last year and returned it when folks I played with said the mic quality was horrible and they preferred the mic on my old Sony PS3 headset.
Gamesky what is better the platinum or the turtle beach stealth 350vr?
Rob Hewitt I like the Platinum more in every category except the mic.....which is great on the 350VR
Gamesky thanks for the reply. One more thing would you say that the platinum is worth double the price of the 350vr? thanks
Because of them being wireless and having a little more space and punch in the sound yes.....but mainly because I love wireless sets more than wired
the playstation gold are trash, I've had the playstation gold and silver.
Just subbed and I'll be looking at more of your videos
thanks so much, I appreciate that. if you don't mind me asking what site was the video on?i get people that see my stuff all over but I never know where
What is the battery life on the platinum
+Adrian Miranda 13hrs
Gamesky whats the battery for the gold?
Shiraaz Salim 7 hours
Dr. Lemonz 6*
they look the same but different price and different sound quality, I've been using the gold headset since last year but I think I'm going to grab my upgrade today, thanks for reviewing platinum :)
and I'm keeping the Sony gold for other devices
no problem and the Platinum are definitely an improvement
Gamesky yep, they are :)
I like the gold although the mic is absolutely terrible even with the chat all the way up my friends can barley hear me i would just buy a turtle beach
Remex56 mine is fine my friend said 8/10
I have gold and upgrading to platinum but the mics are awful which is why I use a blue snowball aswell as they sound great
The Gold Wireless Headset has always had the mic button stop working for me.
Ice Kold Killa the Golds did seem to have quality issues

Quality video man. Been looking for a headset to replace my Golds and have been waiting a long time for the Platinums. Seems like a perfect upgrade for me. I dont need them to be compatible with anything other then my PS4 and i like it neat without a base station and lots of cables. Even though a lot of people think they are expencive I think you have to spend a lot more on other wireless headsets to get the same quality sound.
+Jocke Andersson you will not be disappointed. The Platinum's are amazing. Thanks for checking out the video
The platinum are far better than the gold in my opinion.
Bradley Dickey do you believe they are sturdy ???
I've had the problem of the cracking around the sides for years and have finally bothered to look up a review on the plat headset because I thought it would just have the same crappy plastic as the gold but I am impressed that they bothered to do something about it and so I am definitely going to get it when money is good.
You haven't helped at all😊. Now I'm confused. Want platinum. Afford gold. 😒
thumbs up for this review, just got the platinum and it's worth it,, the sound is great both for gaming and music and as for comfort it's fine for me nothing i can say, thanks gamesky really appreciate your review...
For the gold wireless headset , where can i go for voice changers ... anyone know?
Great review! Glad to hear the bass is a plus so many reviews have said that is the worst part of the platinum headset they have no punch.
this is an perfect example of a guy trying to justify a more expensive purchase.
Which is how our brain figures out where sounds are coming from in real life.
yo the gold on its own is already stunning with music music is super hgh quality and you can hear everything perfect in games its also perfect wouldnt see why the gold could be a bad option if anyone might be thinking that
Great review. I agree the golds are quite 'tinny' with sounds and lack bass and depth. Based on this...I'm going to upgrade!
+Paul Gifford awesome, let me know what you think when you get a chance to try them out
Great video. I really needed a sleek, mid-tier gaming head set that I could also wear outside. Thanks. You earned a sub.
+Victor Alvarez thanks so much
Just bought these and was testing them out on youtube and neflix.
Paul Rumble there strength is in gaming so you should notice a step up in that department
Excellent review! My friend just bought the gold version but I'm leaning towards platinum now.
Woohoo😉 a decent reviewe. At last somebody has described the questions we were all waiting for. Subscribed cheers m8
Nice video! Finally I have a clear picture between the two!
Excellent review.
Thanks,
Mike
I have these as well and I did a Unboxing on my channel. I love these headphones! using them right now for VR!
Just got the golds and they are amazing! Very good sound quality and super comfortable :)
Sandra agreed
To improve the mic quality just connect the headset to the controller with the HDMI cable and it sounds alot better
How do you do that? 🤔
Man, you should have much more subs, you're reviews are so freakin complete, but the strange thing on those headsets, is that two of my friends have the golds, and they use them in the PS4 and the mic sounds much better ...
I appreciate that
that's weird. i wanted to record audio straight from the PS4 so people could here what it would sound like from the system....both mics are not great
I returned the Platinum for some Astro A50 3rd gen.....now the sound quality was amazing on the platinum, the problem I had was the rubber headband part. After 30 mins of gaming I would start really feeling the rubberband pressing down on my head.
Best review straight to the point and gets every thing out and done thank you
Fantastic review / comparison mate. I have the gold headset but may just have to upgrade after your vid!
82predator thanks, I appreciate you checking out the video
Thank you for making this video. Im going to buy the platinum headset :)
My gold has just snapped just from wear and tear after a year and a half. Love the sound of them. Still 90 ish euros in Ireland
Paul Sweeney I love the sound from the Gold's too. Sucks they snapped though
Paul Sweeney There £55 on Amazon UK lad your getting ripped off.
This is the most helpful tip
this is what i needed , going to buy plats today
8 month’s later, did you like them? What is your opinion for someone looking to buy them now
@@kaveson101 no , unfortunately they were out of stock then , so i bought the Turtlebeach 6000 , and honestly they have like 4 seperate modes for clear voice , full bass etc , super human hearing where you can hear the enemy footsteps in game , they are really good 8 mnths in , working perfectly .
@@CEEEEEEEEENA awesome thanks for the info
Thanks for your fantastic review - I just ordered a pair of Plats.
I'm currently
thinking about buying either the Platinum HeadSet or the Astro 50 3gen. I
have currently the Gold Headset, which I use for the PS4 Pro and the
PC, although I mostly game on PC. I was planning to buy the Platinum
Headset to substitute my Gold Headset, and also because I have the
Playstation VR and the Platinum have been designed to be plugged
directly on the VR. But i've heard that, when used on PC, the Platinum
Headset only provide STEREO sound, with NO virtual 7.1 surround at all.
On the contrary, the Astro A50 do that, but do not work as
straightforward when using the Playstation VR, needing aditional cables.
Is this true? How are the Platinum when you use them for PC Gaming? Are
the A50 better for that? Which one do have better positional audio?
Thanks a lot in advance!
I’m getting one today but I don’t know which to get hopefully the platinum 👍🏻
Tremendously well done review, thorough and really helpful. Thanks.
Dude good vid...but you could've just said gold and platinum instead of adding playstation in front all the time.
Great video man, subscribed. Definitely picking up the platinum, I was thinking gold first but then this came out and I saw this video!
Kevin Shields thanks so much...the Platinum are pretty amazing
Good comparison thanks, gettin the platinums.
Great video! I really appreciate it. I was wondering if you've found a way to get rid of my own voice echoing in the platinum headset. Also, I feel "ear fatigue" after using my platinum headsets for a while. Do you experience this as well?
Thanks man! Now I will order the Platinum headset.
So a year later….did you like them ? What’s your opinion?
I liked older headsets. Ones that allow you to blow your eardrums out if you wanted to. These all have limited volume.
Spawn Cap agreed. There are still some studio headphones out there that you can do permanent damage with
I really hate everybody who comments that these things are terrible.
+Mark Kearon no problem. The Pulse are so good except for battery life
how can you not like this dude. cheers!
I have a Gold headset and love it. Is the Platinum worth upgrading to, or would a headset from someone like Razor be better?
Unoriginal DnA _ I personally think the Sennheiser GSP 300 and the HyperX Cloud Core is a better upgrade and under $100. I'm using the Skullcandy PLYR 1 and absolutely love thise
Hey Gamesky, Quick question. Did you notice any difference in sound when running through wireless as opposed to running through the aux cable? thanks
Rod Whitaker yes, you can't use the surround sound in wired mode
Liked and Subscribed. Fantastic review, Thank you. I own the Gold headset and the build quality is horrible. Hinges broke within months and I had to tape the entire plastic band to keep it from falling apart. Time to get the platinum then
Excellent review very informative just subbed, look forward to watching more good luck!.
Dave Perry thanks so much, I appreciate the sub and I have plenty more coming soon
Are these still sold ?
