On the subject of dog training... I trained dogs before I trained horses. They are very different animals, but the similarities in how you do things is amazing. People hate to have their kids compared to animals, but even raising kids and training horses is a lot the same.
I, too am a dog trainer, but have worked with horses a bit (and one mule, with great success!). I love watching these videos because Steve is so intuitive with the horses and that's the way I work with dogs, too. I'm semi-retired now (nearly 80) and began working with dogs when I was a teenager. You never stop teaching and never stop learning!!!
Greetings from Northern California. First I wish to express condolences on the passing of your mother. Mine has been gone a long long time. I had to write because of what you did with the mare not wanting to lift her feet. Today the farrier came. I have two easy for the farrier and two that are terrible. When the first problem began giving him a hard time I had an idea. I grabbed a bag of horse cookies and when she lifted her foot she got a cookie. When she struggled with the shoer I stopped the cookies. We went through lots of cookies but it worked like a charm. The second horse is even worse but the cookies worked on her too. It was as if they forgot how much they hate having their feet done. So thank you for confirming that rewarding good behavior rather than punishing bad behavior is the ticket!

I think the story with Lewis was connected to your mother. She obviously raised you with love and patience, so you have love and patience to give to Lewis. That is the way the world should go ‘round. And, for you, it does. Bravo Steve.
Been down with a stomach bug, so have finally had a great excuse to catch some of your earlier videos. I fell in love with that darling white pony who was the companion to the " uncatchable " horse. At 5' 3", and turning 60 soon, I have been blessed to stay small enough to ride ponies throughout my 55 years of riding and teaching (hunter/jumpers). Love their personalities. What a gorgeous location, enjoyed hearing the gulls in the background! Quite late, but my sympathy for the loss of your Mum. How proud she must have been of you. Dad has been gone 22 years and my mom, 12. I still find myself wanting to call them to share news of my life. We carry them with us in our heart everywhere we go and hear their life lessons in our heads until we meet them again.
My deepest sympathies for the loss of your mom. It's difficult to lose a parent. We as parents tell our kids, it's natural for a parent to pass away before their kids, but this statement doesn't always make it easier as kids to deal with it. Sounds like you had great parents.

I used to have people that would just let me come and ride their horses when I was young (like 12) I had no training (except tacking up) but I LOVED them. I could ride them with just a bridle and bareback after a while. Most probably because the horse was well trained as I certainly wasn’t! One horse was great at jumping so we would just tear around and jump the fences. We were always so happy and free! The stable owners were always astonished. As I got a little older my allergies became so bad that I have rarely been able to get near a horse since them and I miss them SO much. It’s difficult to explain. Love your videos SO MUCH. Hello from Oregon in the USA. So sorry to hear that you have lost your mom. My mother is going to be 89 this October and while still of good mind, her body is beginning to fail her. She is getting more fragile as time goes by so I know, and so does she, that her time here on earth is slowly coming to a close. It is very hard and I am glad you were able to be with your mother when she passed. Bless you and your family. Love your videos and while I no longer have horses (I am 66 now, I got my first pony at 5 yrs. I enjoyed many, many years as a horse owner), I am still intrigued to watch training videos to learn about methods to deal with difficult and/or young horses. Keep the video's coming!
I am a dog groomer and used your techniques on a clients old English sheep dog who ordinarily leans forward almost breaking my table arm every time. Well your method of correcting the "unrequested forward movement" and it worked, Thank you

Hi,Steve! Thank You for Your videos. Got quite a few tips from Your method of horsemanship. I have been training young horses for 25 years. But now for 7years have to fight with cancer, so I have lost ability to move and strength guite a bit. Since I found Your chanel I got my confidence back so much,that I got myself a 2years old unhandled stallion. Thow my limping is very noticeable and I can't walk fast or long, My stallion is turned in to puppy just in few months. So easy to work with him. Also I returned to training other people horses using basics of Your method. Thank You and I wish You all the best!

My mom died when I was 27, many years ago. I took care of her for the last year. My sister was in Africa starting her foreign service career and flew home when I told her it was the end. Mom was unconscious and in a Hospice hospital but when my sister arrived, she woke up and they talked for almost 8 hours. A few hours after that she passed away, surrounded by loved ones all praying for her. It was powerful!
I couldn't imagine a better way to move on. It's amazing how that happens when someone is close to death. My mother in law was unconscious for 2 days but woke up and looked around the room at all of us sitting with her. She said "what the f*#& is going on what are you all doing?" 😂 She was there like nothing was wrong for about an hour then she fell asleep and died a couple hours later. I'm so sorry for your loss. Lovely to see pictures of your mom and dad. Thank you for sharing her with us. I'm sorry for your loss.
It is amazing how often that occurs before a loved one passes. My late father had Alzheimer's, but was able to recognize me the night before he passed. It is definitely a final gift to us.
Steve, there is SO MUCH in this video. One thing that I often see in you is your ability to have ideas come THROUGH you and I love that. It is something very special. In training dogs, sometimes when I am giving instruction, I have often had the feeling of "How in the heck do I know this?" I don't remember learning it from anyone, it just is coming through me in a divine moment. You are blessed in this manner, too. Wish I could come meet you someday, but will most likely have to settle on binging on your videos every day. You are a blessing to horses and their people.
I am so sorry for your loss. Since I lost my mother when I was 30, I can truly empathize with the pain that is felt when a parent is lost. You are talented in your understanding of horses, and from your picture with your mom with a horse, it's quite obvious that your talent with horses comes from her. Much love from Washington USA.

Great work with the gray horse Steve. I don't think anyone had shown that horse before that you were both willing to lead the horse and then, to follow it. I could see the light in the horse's brain switch on. There is certainly something about showing the horse that you will ask it for both its normal responses. The "leading and following" exercise is a great one! I think that every human wants to be 'the leader' and somehow see themselves in a less important relationship with a horse when they follow it. Maybe it is because we spend so many years in school listening intently to the teacher standing at the front of the class! Horses, on the other hand, usually place the real power at the back of the herd. It is usually some wiser and older mare that is up at the front of the herd because she knows where to lead the horses to find water, safe grazing, and a quiet field where they can eat and nap and play. When I used to take equitation students out for a ride at the end of their class, I usually rode a gray TB stallion. My position on the ride was almost always at the tail-end of the group. All the students' horses, mares and geldings, were on their 'best behavior' when the stallion was walking behind them. No horse ever tried to pause to snatch a mouthful of grass or do anything that would draw the attention of the stallion. They were also not afraid of noisy cars and lurching hay-trucks roaring past them from behind. After we had our walk I would ask the students to tell me what they had noticed about their horses' behavior. Sometimes I would get a student who realized that the horses had been particularly well-behaved when the stallion followed the group. Even better, sometimes I would have a student who could tell me that not only was the stallion at the back of the class to keep everyone else moving but that he was also there to protect "his herd" from barking dogs and dangerous over-taking cars. I always felt that the students got the most out of lessons when I left it up to them to make sense of what they were seeing. And "Yes", we had a wise little Chestnut mare who was usually 'in the lead' on our 'after-class' walks. Condolences on losing your Mum. Your kind and patient teaching, this time with Lewis and his pony, really says a lot about what you learned as a child.

So sorry about your mom. She was a beautiful woman. Enjoying your videos tremendously because horses have always been my greatest love. Was thrown many years ago and picked up a shoulder injury. Haven't ridden since due to fear since then. Live on a farm filled with horses. A mare got out and was galloping in fear. Took a chance and managed to get her attention. She was quivering and I kept my distance, closed my eyes and told myself that if I die in the middle of the night then so be it. Kept my arms by my sides, signaled with a "come" motion and softly called her. She eventually approached, put her head against my chest. I turned and started walking toward the paddock and she followed. Opened the gate, she walked through and that was that. Will never forget that special moment.
I love watching you work with the horses! You really reach them at their level, show them that you are firm but safe, so many things I have a hard time putting into words. Thank you for the work that you do, for the people certainly, but especially for the misunderstood horses. You change lives.

Deeply sorry for the loss of your Mother! She seems to have been a really great person. I always admire how you find different ways depending on the horse and the situation to find the best solution. That’s a true gift! Of course you can study and learn a lot. But you still need that feeling on what will work best for this horse with this situation.

What a STUNNING mare, and the poor thing is positively terrified of humans and very intelligent. She looks like a Fell x Arabian. The advances in equine behavior science are nothing short of amazing and we can now see the emotions in the horse brain, and connect them to behaviors. You were able to catch her because you showed her she could trust you, but she did not feel safe when you left. This horse needs a special, patient owner who can develop trust. This animal is very sensitive, intelligent, and has a very strong will. Eventually, with the right owner, this horse would run through cannon fire and flames for you. And so sorry about your Mum. I know the pain. Hugs to you for both your loss and connecting with this incredible mare.

I learn so much from you! I think I will be able to refine my timing a great deal; to watch for and reward smaller, more subtle increments in shaping; to reinforce with smaller, more subtle, rewards (all as relates to dogs, not horses). I think much we do to reward dogs is far more stimulating than it needs to be, which is sometimes counterproductive. And I'm sometimes get on other dog owners about the salience of their rewards, for example, training loose leash walking or heeling with treats ... my pet peeve, as the most salient reward for the dog that pulls or forges is clearly resumption of forward motion. As an owner of giant breed dogs (Newfoundlands) I've often wondered how how horse groundwork might relate to handling of 150+ lb dogs. Watching you work really gets me thinking!

So glad you mentioned that this knowledge is old but sadly forgotten, to old folk like me ,it seems incredible how many hundreds of people are acquiring lots of horses but simply have NO idea how to do the most basic ( I don't mean easiest) ground work.. Also that work was originally called dressage,,after which the horse was "schooled" eventually doing high school. Steve is bringing so much knowledge to everyone,,absolutely brilliant.
Steve's mom is gorgeous! Hoping for you & your family only sweetness is left behind. Aww, Tanya's such a fun spirit & good sport. It's so enjoyable to watch your teamwork & tag along on your travels. I'm wondering if you ever comment about the size/weight of rider to horse & how that may affect behavior. I've seen some sad pairings on that account which proved the heart of the problem. (For instance teenagers who've clearly outgrown their ponies.)

I'm watching the video footage of the horse that's hard to catch. Your camera was all over the place at times except for on the horse and Steve. I kept trying to adjust my laptop, I even had it off the table moving my laptop around trying to find and focus on the horse in the field. Then i'm like, what the heck am I doing! lol No matter how much i physically move my laptop, I still won't get a chance to see the horse. Lmao I'll blame this on on the meds I take, thank God my husband wasn't around, seeing me wave my laptop around. Thanks for the video! I'm still laughing at my stupidity. lol

On the subject of dog training... I trained dogs before I trained horses. They are very different animals, but the similarities in how you do things is amazing. People hate to have their kids compared to animals, but even raising kids and training horses is a lot the same.

I, too am a dog trainer, but have worked with horses a bit (and one mule, with great success!). I love watching these videos because Steve is so intuitive with the horses and that's the way I work with dogs, too. I'm semi-retired now (nearly 80) and began working with dogs when I was a teenager. You never stop teaching and never stop learning!!!

Greetings from Northern California. First I wish to express condolences on the passing of your mother. Mine has been gone a long long time. I had to write because of what you did with the mare not wanting to lift her feet. Today the farrier came. I have two easy for the farrier and two that are terrible. When the first problem began giving him a hard time I had an idea. I grabbed a bag of horse cookies and when she lifted her foot she got a cookie. When she struggled with the shoer I stopped the cookies. We went through lots of cookies but it worked like a charm. The second horse is even worse but the cookies worked on her too. It was as if they forgot how much they hate having their feet done. So thank you for confirming that rewarding good behavior rather than punishing bad behavior is the ticket!

Been down with a stomach bug, so have finally had a great excuse to catch some of your earlier videos. I fell in love with that darling white pony who was the companion to the " uncatchable " horse. At 5' 3", and turning 60 soon, I have been blessed to stay small enough to ride ponies throughout my 55 years of riding and teaching (hunter/jumpers). Love their personalities.

Quite late, but my sympathy for the loss of your Mum. How proud she must have been of you. Dad has been gone 22 years and my mom, 12. I still find myself wanting to call them to share news of my life. We carry them with us in our heart everywhere we go and hear their life lessons in our heads until we meet them again.

My deepest sympathies for the loss of your mom. It's difficult to lose a parent. We as parents tell our kids, it's natural for a parent to pass away before their kids, but this statement doesn't always make it easier as kids to deal with it. Sounds like you had great parents.

I used to have people that would just let me come and ride their horses when I was young (like 12) I had no training (except tacking up) but I LOVED them. I could ride them with just a bridle and bareback after a while. Most probably because the horse was well trained as I certainly wasn’t! One horse was great at jumping so we would just tear around and jump the fences. We were always so happy and free! The stable owners were always astonished. As I got a little older my allergies became so bad that I have rarely been able to get near a horse since them and I miss them SO much. It’s difficult to explain. Love your videos SO MUCH. Thank you 🙏 My sincere condolences to you all for the loss of your mother.
Hello from Oregon in the USA. So sorry to hear that you have lost your mom. My mother is going to be 89 this October and while still of good mind, her body is beginning to fail her. She is getting more fragile as time goes by so I know, and so does she, that her time here on earth is slowly coming to a close. It is very hard and I am glad you were able to be with your mother when she passed. Bless you and your family. Love your videos and while I no longer have horses (I am 66 now, I got my first pony at 5 yrs. I enjoyed many, many years as a horse owner), I am still intrigued to watch training videos to learn about methods to deal with difficult and/or young horses. Keep the video's coming!

Hi,Steve! Thank You for Your videos. Got quite a few tips from Your method of horsemanship. I have been training young horses for 25 years. But now for 7years have to fight with cancer, so I have lost ability to move and strength guite a bit. Since I found Your chanel I got my confidence back so much,that I got myself a 2years old unhandled stallion. Thow my limping is very noticeable and I can't walk fast or long, My stallion is turned in to puppy just in few months. So easy to work with him. Also I returned to training other people horses using basics of Your method. Thank You and I wish You all the best!

My mom died when I was 27, many years ago. I took care of her for the last year. My sister was in Africa starting her foreign service career and flew home when I told her it was the end. Mom was unconscious and in a Hospice hospital but when my sister arrived, she woke up and they talked for almost 8 hours. A few hours after that she passed away, surrounded by loved ones all praying for her. It was powerful!
I couldn't imagine a better way to move on. It's amazing how that happens when someone is close to death. My mother in law was unconscious for 2 days but woke up and looked around the room at all of us sitting with her. She said "what the f*#& is going on what are you all doing?" 😂 She was there like nothing was wrong for about an hour then she fell asleep and died a couple hours later. I'm so sorry for your loss.

It is amazing how often that occurs before a loved one passes. My late father had Alzheimer's, but was able to recognize me the night before he passed. It is definitely a final gift to us.

Steve, there is SO MUCH in this video. One thing that I often see in you is your ability to have ideas come THROUGH you and I love that. It is something very special. In training dogs, sometimes when I am giving instruction, I have often had the feeling of "How in the heck do I know this?" I don't remember learning it from anyone, it just is coming through me in a divine moment. You are blessed in this manner, too. Wish I could come meet you someday, but will most likely have to settle on binging on your videos every day. You are a blessing to horses and their people.
I am so sorry for your loss. Since I lost my mother when I was 30, I can truly empathize with the pain that is felt when a parent is lost. You are talented in your understanding of horses, and from your picture with your mom with a horse, it's quite obvious that your talent with horses comes from her. Much love from Washington USA.

Great work with the gray horse Steve. I don't think anyone had shown that horse before that you were both willing to lead the horse and then, to follow it. I could see the light in the horse's brain switch on. There is certainly something about showing the horse that you will ask it for both its normal responses. The "leading and following" exercise is a great one!
I think that every human wants to be 'the leader' and somehow see themselves in a less important relationship with a horse when they follow it. Maybe it is because we spend so many years in school listening intently to the teacher standing at the front of the class! Horses, on the other hand, usually place the real power at the back of the herd. It is usually some wiser and older mare that is up at the front of the herd because she knows where to lead the horses to find water, safe grazing, and a quiet field where they can eat and nap and play.
When I used to take equitation students out for a ride at the end of their class, I usually rode a gray TB stallion. My position on the ride was almost always at the tail-end of the group. All the students' horses, mares and geldings, were on their 'best behavior' when the stallion was walking behind them. No horse ever tried to pause to snatch a mouthful of grass or do anything that would draw the attention of the stallion. They were also not afraid of noisy cars and lurching hay-trucks roaring past them from behind.
After we had our walk I would ask the students to tell me what they had noticed about their horses' behavior. Sometimes I would get a student who realized that the horses had been particularly well-behaved when the stallion followed the group. Even better, sometimes I would have a student who could tell me that not only was the stallion at the back of the class to keep everyone else moving but that he was also there to protect "his herd" from barking dogs and dangerous over-taking cars. I always felt that the students got the most out of lessons when I left it up to them to make sense of what they were seeing. And "Yes", we had a wise little Chestnut mare who was usually 'in the lead' on our 'after-class' walks.

So sorry about your mom. She was a beautiful woman. Enjoying your videos tremendously because horses have always been my greatest love. Was thrown many years ago and picked up a shoulder injury. Haven't ridden since due to fear since then. Live on a farm filled with horses. A mare got out and was galloping in fear. Took a chance and managed to get her attention. She was quivering and I kept my distance, closed my eyes and told myself that if I die in the middle of the night then so be it. Kept my arms by my sides, signaled with a "come" motion and softly called her. She eventually approached, put her head against my chest. I turned and started walking toward the paddock and she followed. Opened the gate, she walked through and that was that. Will never forget that special moment.

What a STUNNING mare, and the poor thing is positively terrified of humans and very intelligent. She looks like a Fell x Arabian. The advances in equine behavior science are nothing short of amazing and we can now see the emotions in the horse brain, and connect them to behaviors. You were able to catch her because you showed her she could trust you, but she did not feel safe when you left. This horse needs a special, patient owner who can develop trust. This animal is very sensitive, intelligent, and has a very strong will. Eventually, with the right owner, this horse would run through cannon fire and flames for you. And so sorry about your Mum. I know the pain. Hugs to you for both your loss and connecting with this incredible mare.

I think I will be able to refine my timing a great deal; to watch for and reward smaller, more subtle increments in shaping; to reinforce with smaller, more subtle, rewards (all as relates to dogs, not horses).
I think much we do to reward dogs is far more stimulating than it needs to be, which is sometimes counterproductive. And I'm sometimes get on other dog owners about the salience of their rewards, for example, training loose leash walking or heeling with treats ... my pet peeve, as the most salient reward for the dog that pulls or forges is clearly resumption of forward motion.
As an owner of giant breed dogs (Newfoundlands) I've often wondered how how horse groundwork might relate to handling of 150+ lb dogs. Watching you work really gets me thinking!

So glad you mentioned that this knowledge is old but sadly forgotten, to old folk like me ,it seems incredible how many hundreds of people are acquiring lots of horses but simply have NO idea how to do the most basic ( I don't mean easiest) ground work..
Also that work was originally called dressage,,after which the horse was "schooled" eventually doing high school.

I'm watching the video footage of the horse that's hard to catch. Your camera was all over the place at times except for on the horse and Steve. I kept trying to adjust my laptop, I even had it off the table moving my laptop around trying to find and focus on the horse in the field. Then i'm like, what the heck am I doing! lol No matter how much i physically move my laptop, I still won't get a chance to see the horse. Lmao I'll blame this on on the meds I take, thank God my husband wasn't around, seeing me wave my laptop around. Thanks for the video! I'm still laughing at my stupidity. lol

Sorry to hear of your mom passing ... it is so hard. My mom has dementia and only has a short time left .... Love watching your videos... They brighten my days...

There's no one who can replace your Mum, but I hope it gives you some comfort knowing your Mum is in a better place with our Lord and Savior... Jesus Christ.
