Hearing this piece performed live on the marimba was the most profound experience I have ever had. It was better than any kind of high I have ever had in my whole life. I wish I was kidding.
This is one of my all - time favorite pieces by Bach. Thank you for uploading such a wonderful interpretation of it! I have always heard it played with the violin, and it was a pleasant change to hear it played on the marimba for the first time. Wonderful!
Bravo! Very nice. I like your musical expression. I played this almost 20 years ago when I was a music major (before I got married and abandoned music as a profession in favor of going into business). It's one of my favorite Bach pieces to listen to on marimba. Well done! This makes me want to start playing again.
I am so impressed. I play this as guitar and violin versions but it never produced such a "catching effect" I'll try to reproduce it in my interpretation. Thanks
@rahmalec People here in Norway are very splitted about the Burton and the Stevens. When we are learning one 4 mallet grip, it is either the Burton or the Stevens. Almost none is using the traditional.
@stupidhatonthefloor3 Thanks for the advice. For the dynamics you need to realise that the sound in this case comes directly from the handycam which is positioned near the bottom of the marimba, and most likely has this auto-adjusting thing enabled for the sound. In the other version I have of this (you can find it as the response to this video), I think I'm actually playing louder in parts, but the range of dynamics comes through a little better.
@triciamaguire Thanks very much, definitely feel very proud now from his comment. Hope you are all keeping well. I think it might be easier to play on marimba, although we certainly have our own problems to deal with, not playing millions of wrong notes is definitely the hardest. Adrian says hello as well.
Hey friend nice work. I am learning this piece now and the sticking recommended in the book doesn't seem to be very good. Did you come up with your own?
@Thegaffaman In the US almost everyone uses Stevens, In the UK and France, many use Burton (but others as well), in eastern Europe and Asia, a lot use traditional.
@swingisthething94 I took it straight from the violin part, so should be a low G (unless I've played a load of wrong notes!). You can play this on any marimba since it only goes down to the G below middle C. If you want to play it an octave lower like I did in my other video, then you'll need a low F marimba.
@jazzevans They're actually the van Sice Adams mallets. In the new video of this I made, I used Bogdan Bacanu's signature mallets, which are much better in my opinion.
I'm looking for a digital recorder or video recorder to tape myself playing these days and just haven't found one that I am confident would be great for recording something as resonant as a marimba or even timpani. Is this a recording you made with something on your own or with a whole mic set up and such? I'd really appreciate your feedback. Thanks!
Hey! that's very good! congratulations! I wanted to ask you how do you play on bars 35 - 41? do you do a triplet and then go to sixteenth notes? regards, Luis.
@noelley120 This was recorded with one of those Sony Handycams. I have another version of this piece, which is better played and better recorded, here on youtube. In that version I used a zoom recorder to record the sound and just replaced the sound part coming from the video camera. The main thing though is to record in a good hall.
@andrewpolter It's just grip tape. I use the burton grip which means you get a lot of stick clicks, etc, Anyway, check out the other video to this I put up. It's better I think and is a slightly different interpretation
very nice balance between the voices! maybe it will be good one octve lower as well ...as a kind of Lute transcritpion....that actually i think Bach used to do it! but really great ! Bravo!
Its easier to make a marimba sound that to make a bowed string instrument sound... thats true. But playing the marimba is as complicated as any other instrument
Very very nice. I'm left wanting more sensitive phrasing. Your softs could be softer, and your louds are too loud. Where is the peak of this piece? Remember, this is not indoor drum line. Take the arms out of the equation when it comes to dynamics. You can obviously play well, and it's good that you play with confidence. However some of the sounds you're getting out of the instrument are rather harsh.
I have no doubt this particular is more difficult for a string player, but to say that marimba is easier than a string instrument is kind of just being a dick, marimba takes years and years of practice to master, just like violin, viola, or trumpet, or guitar, or any other instrument for that matter. While 2-mallet playing is a bit easier to master, 4-mallet playing is one of the most difficult things you can ever come across, no matter what your experience with percussion is. So don't dismiss players, of other instruments simply because you are ignorant of them. I certainly would never dismiss I violinist attempting to play a trumpet solo, and say "Well it's easier to play it on violin then on trumpet!" I hope you've grown up a lot since you wrote these comments 2 years ago.

I wonder how Bach´s works sound well on every instrument. An absolute perfection that no other person (that I know) has reached.
I realize this isn't quite the same, but I would add Charlie Parker to that list.
Beautiful. Those rolled chords are absolutely magical.
That was absolutely beautiful. I think a lot of violinists could learn from that performance.
I cant get enough of the Marimba. This instrument's sounds pass right through me. I love it.

Great dynamics!
beautiful transcription and performance!
You play this really well. It's a pleasure to listen to this. Thank you.
Beautiful

Fabulous.

Very well played! good dynamics and very fluent.
Especially noticeable was your splendid sound - very resonant and beautiful!
Keep on the good work!
That was brilliant. Thanks for that!
Looking forward to see you play in Carlingford next week! 👍
Bravooooo......loved it very well played
I'm starting to play more Bach to prepare for grad auditions, and I really like this video. You played this very well! Great musicality!
Bravo! Excellent work.
@noelley120 Thank you very much. I'm glad you enjoyed.
wow... It was incredible.
Wow wonderful performance

You play really well..!

@triciamaguire
Thanks very much, definitely feel very proud now from his comment. Hope you are all keeping well.

Adrian says hello as well.
Good!!!
pure beauty
What type of mallets are you using? Excellent job
Hey friend nice work. I am learning this piece now and the sticking recommended in the book doesn't seem to be very good. Did you come up with your own?
+Noah Van Helsing Yep I did. I just worked off the original violin part.
very good!!!
So cute..^^
@MarimBeast
Thanks! It helps playing in a good hall.
@Thegaffaman In the US almost everyone uses Stevens, In the UK and France, many use Burton (but others as well), in eastern Europe and Asia, a lot use traditional.
Bravo!!! Where can I find the music for this version?
Indeed the Burton grip. He's holding them with one finger in between and the outside mallets on top
@percujustice
Thanks very much for the comment
Yep
I have an Adams marimba too :D but there is an adapter on the power cord any idea how to get it off??
you are using the Burton grip right? ah, finally someone else is using it! almost all other classic players uses Stevens grip
Bach would be proud.

absolutly awesome :)

@Mrholyshit357 Yep I know. Many violinists mess around with this part including playing demi-semis, etc.
Nothing to say, shit ! It's perfect !
Hey! that's very good! congratulations!
I wanted to ask you how do you play on bars 35 - 41?
do you do a triplet and then go to sixteenth notes?
regards, Luis.
Yep that's right.
What mallets are you using and why did you choose them?
are you using the burton grip? how can you do this without stevens grip?
A lesson for the string players...
it is available from Steve Weiss Music
@tamnizzle33 Just play it from the original. That's what I did, and what everyone else does as well I think.
What mallets are you using in this video?
I love how they sound.
What is the lowest note you play i think it is the low F or am i wrong?
@noelley120
This was recorded with one of those Sony Handycams.

@klmsdrummer Yep, just the violin version straight
What can of four mallet grip is that? o_O
Is that an Adams Marimba your playing on?
@aks0227 Thanks, but I have another version of this which is better I think.
very nice interpretation. Do you have a marimba transcription or you made it yourself? i would love to play it, can I buy the transcription?
...
You don't need a transcription. Just buy the violin score.
challenge accepted
Its easier to make a marimba sound that to make a bowed string instrument sound... thats true. But playing the marimba is as complicated as any other instrument
@bestoflms Hmm, can't imagine that was the easiest task in the world! :-)
You're in for a good life.
@AndreasBergset Just use the original. That's what I did.
burten
griip i belive
So did you just play the violin version? Or is there a specific transcription for marimba? Did you take the music from imslp.org?
Any musician could! :D
But wait.. Am I sensing a bit of negativity towards violinists?
Many hits are too direct for me. But maybe this is your intention?
....
I played this on solo glockenspiel at one point in my life with two mallets. My ambition exceeded my execution.
Very very nice. I'm left wanting more sensitive phrasing. Your softs could be softer, and your louds are too loud. Where is the peak of this piece? Remember, this is not indoor drum line. I final passages I would out more stress on lower voice (first sound in each bar)
Because marimba is easier to play than string instruments
Are you sure it's a marimba? Fair sure you're thinking of a vibraphone.
Hahaha for string players its more difficult to play this
That is true, but it's not more difficult to play a violin than to play marimba
