  • JP &Yappy Survive Wrath Of Mean Azz Bees
    In this episode by JPthebeeman, he invites The Yappy Beeman to come down and have a little fun removing some very pissy bees. although the bees were mean, we had a blast filming this honey bee removal in the New Orleans area. It was a long process and we didn't think we would ever finish the job. The beehive in the wall was huge.
    Jp The Beeman is a professional honey bee removal specialist in the New Orleans and surrounding metropolitan area. Covering Metairie La,Kenner La, Harahan La, LaPlace La, Gonzales La, Port Sulfer La, Jefferson La, River Ridge La, Harvey La, Ridge City La, Marrero La, Gretna La, Belle Chasse La, and more.
    JP The Beeman has been providing live honey bee removal services and swarm captures for over 28 years. He has successfully removed thousands of honey bee colonies and swarms from places such as buried tires to hot tubs, trees, duck boxes, bird houses, squirrel boxes and residential and commercial structures. If you need honey bee removal service in the New Orleans or surrounding area, please feel free to contact him at: jpthebeeman.com for assistance.
    as always, a basic knowledge in construction of residential and commercial structures is a must. Always be aware of your surroundings as bees can become a problem for those nearby your immediate location. Always use caution throughout the entire bee removal process.

    Guys, this one takes me back to the good old days of taking bees out of tool shed. I got the bees and had to clean up a hell of a mess on the ground. I was young and had more fun than the law would allow. Cheers, Bob

      +Lynn Etheridge they did settle down. I babysat them for about a week after the removal & they had settled down nicely. These wound up going to my buddy Schawee in the swamp. We'll see how they do this year once they come out of winter but I spoke with Schawee today & he didn't lose many colonies at all this winter & I know for a fact this one is doing well. Glad you enjoyed the video btw :-)

    Yappy did 2/3 of the work and got the queen. JP provided smarts a plan and drove to Home Depot. BTW, I can't believe that house had a girder (or a floor joist??) touching the ground in N.O. Even if it was treated wood. A *FEAST* for termites!

    Nice video JP... Here (in Netherlands) it's still winter with cold weather and bees not really active yet... Can't wait though :) My bees are the gentlest bees in the world, but with rain in the air you won't wanna touch em with a pole if you had to!! See i was wondering when JP was finally going to wear a bee suit. Here in Florida we run into Africanized feral hives all the time. There is almost no way you could do a first inspection, encounter Africanized bees and NOT end up in the hospital. We get southern yellow jackets down here allot too. Buggers can wrap an entire tool shed or a palm tree or even a car, totally wrapped up in their paper hives. Big massive buggers that look like alien homes which they protect fiercely. Anyone who has dealt with southern yellow jackets knows how dangerous they are. They make bees look like a docile ant farm. Seriously anyone who wants to know, look up some of the southern yellow jacket removals in florida and other southern states. Its scary. Even in our bee suits you get stung by them because there are just so many one is bound to gitcha through the suit. They hold onto you and sting you over and over since they don’t have ridges on their stingers and can just keep taggin ya.. Yellow jackets SUCK! LoL And so do their angry honey producing cousins. The Africanized Honey bee, AKA The Killer Bee.

Stay safe!

    • @JPthebeeman
      @JPthebeeman  8 років тому +1

      +bigred74699 After I've determined they're just plain mean I'll go in & pinch the queen. By the next day they're ready for a new queen. Actually a lot less than that in most cases but waiting till the next day gives them plenty enough time to realize they're queenless. I have messed with TBHs, have one that's had bees in it now going on four years. TBHs are lots of fun but not practical for me personally.

    • @JPthebeeman
      @JPthebeeman  8 років тому +1

      +Liz Spencer burlap is a good choice. My buddy Schawee actually uses grass clippings, not fresh ones obviously but dried brown ones. Any fuel that doesn't give off too much heat is good.
      Wood shavings are good.
      Now with pellets you will want to add them after your smoker has been going for a bit as they are hard to light & keep going by themselves.
      Investing in a propane torch is not a bad idea either. Easy to light your fuel & relight your smoker if need be.

    Dear J.P. I was wondering if you could help me with a question. When a swarm happens to look for new living quarters, what are the bees looking for in a new home? Does the size of the cavity matter? If so, about what size do they like? I know they want a dry place, but do they also want a certain sized entry hole? What do they need to stick new comb to an inner surface? It seems they need something a little rough to stick the wax to when they begin a comb. Is a certain shape of a cavity preferred?
    I'm trying to think of a way to make a cavity very appealing to a swarm to catch honey bees in. What do bees like best for a new pad?

      +SpiritBear12 generally speaking they like a dark enclosed void space with a small opening, a space at a minimum, the size of two basketballs but nothing is carved in stone when it comes to bees. Some swarms will defy logic & build completely in the open. To be honest, if you are wanting to catch swarms there is no better set up Imo than a deep hive body with frames. The size is right & if for some reason you get tied up after they've moved in for a week or so its all good. With a commercially available swarm trap after 5-7 days you have to destroy the thing to get the bees out.

      I don't know what the commercial traps look like, but I have a design in mind that's far lighter than a hive box. I have a heart problem, so lifting those things is a no go for me. If I were to keep bees it would be in a horizontal Lanstroth top bar kind of hive. But the trap isn't really for me. A friend of mine keeps bees and she goofed one year and they swarmed out and she had to get new bees. So, I'm thinking of a light weight trap to be hung in a tree, or some other attractive place for bees.
      That's the other thing I forgot to ask too. Should the hive be in fair sun or is it better off in the shade?

      @JPthebeeman  8 років тому +1

      +SpiritBear12 get away from the mindset that you have to move entire boxes because you do not have to! Bring an empty box with you & transfer frames one at a time. You remove half the frames & you just cut your weight load in half! Be creative! You can utilize a pulley system & raise a deep hive body up with no worries & coming down is much easier than raising up a box with added weight! Incidentally, swarms will move into traps that are sitting right on the ground even though the books talk about getting them up in the air. Anywhere from 6' to ground level is more than adequate height wise. A slightly shaded area would be better than direct sun.

      Thank you for the advice. I live in an apartment building any way. Management would not be too keen on bee hives. But I do like bees and I know they're important to have around. I would like to see my friend have better success with her's.
      I don't see many honey bees around here (Massachusetts) though I do know there are keepers of bees. I was once walking around in the down town area of Framingham MA on a drizzly overcast raw day. I was walking behind a large building that used to be a factory when I saw two yellow things on the ground. I took a closer look hoping they were not short tempered yellow jackets. Nope, they were honey bees taking a drink from a puddle on the ground. I wished I had more time to sit and watch them, but I was there for an appointment so I couldn't dilly dally. I wondered if they were wild or if there was a beekeeper near by in the city, maybe with a hive on the roof. I was surprised to see them out on such a cold drizzly clammy day. I was glad to see them. I was not in a good mood at the time but seeing them helped me out a bit. Framingham can be very dreary.
      I will try to make the trap hive and give one or more to my friend. She can hang one or more in the pear tree behind the house. It's a bit shady but not too shady and not too far from the hive box she has in the yard. It will be light weight and easy to open if and when bees might be in it.

      +jimi Mardlin I believe it's a pretty ingenious design, great concept but appears some kinks have not been worked out fully from what I've seen so far & its expensive! The small handful of videos I've seen on it from actual users struggling to harvest honey have me believing this. Currently, I'm seeing this more as a novelty instead of something the seasoned beekeeper would want to incorporate into their repertoire.

    • @JPthebeeman
      @JPthebeeman  8 років тому +1

      I like almost all of it! Believe it or not I'm very fond of sweet yellow clover, good stuff! Anything with citrus gets a nod, love sourwood, thistle, mesquite, tallow, & at the top of my list (which many will cringe at) goldenrod! Cotton honey is unique but I like it, like privet honey & I have enjoyed Brazilian pepper honey but it all depends on where it comes from. I could go on! I'm sure you must have access to some good honey where you are. What is your favorite?
