I've actually studied this for years. The fish first hold in the closest deep hole. If the water gets too low, but there's still flowing water they will attempt to swim to the next deepest hole. If they can't make it they return and wait in hopes of the water rising. If the water dries out, like it has been lately, then the river is repopulated from the fish that come downstream once the dam is opened.

I'll make a video about where to find catfish under bridges now that the water is low. But if you think of the pilars of the bridge as a log jam, they will have a similar effect. if you watch my video about log jams you'll see. Then combine that with my video, "where to find catfish on a river" and find where the channel passes by the bridge. That will be the best side of the bridge to fish on. Hope this helps!

Yeah I wrote in the description that my daughter was having difficulties. She usually does a better job. This is my way of making this quality time for her and I, and teaching her a thing or two along the way. I'm sure her camera work will be much better in the next video. Like I said, it was just a bad day for her.

Thank you for taking the time to put up a great video, and explaining the inner workings of the river. I plan on doing a few survival fishing videos, and this information will assist me in explaining where to go for optimal fishing. If it is no trouble, may I link your video when I do? Thank you in advance.

Kris, how and why do they stop the water flow on the Rio Grande?

john mills Years ago New Mexico made an agreement with Texas to give them a certain amount of water every year for irrigation purposes. Since we have been in a drought the past few years, the water is collected in Elephant Butte lake and Caballo lake and distributed to the farmers on an as needed basis. This usually means that the water will flow from June to August and sometimes less depending on the water shed. I think the shortest time span I have ever seen the river flow was a mere 6 weeks. This year we have had more rain and they are predicting that we are no longer in a drought status, but the river is still scheduled for shutoff sometime in August. There was a time when the river would flow year round, but that seems like it was years ago.

I fish at the Rio Grande myself. I wanted to ask you, do you ever fish under the bridges? I use to have some luck, but for the past 2 years I have caught nothing! Any tips?

lol your cameraman isnt so good. Good effort, but maybe it would be better for you to narrate from behind the camera so you can direct the camera to the exact spots your talking about because its tough to communicate what you're explaining and hope that your cameraman points to the exact spot. Im not dissing the person running the camera, im sure theyre trying to do it right. But it might just be easier to teach people if you shot the spots yourself while speaking, from behind the camera.
