- GAYLE chats with ET's Denny Directo at the 2022 American Music Awards in Los Angeles. The 'abcdefu' singer is celebrating an AMA nomination for New Artist of the Year. GAYLE shares her excitement for joining Taylor Swift on tour next year, adding her reaction to the Ticketmaster controversy that followed after tickets went on sale last week. The 2022 American Music Awards aired on ABC.
I’ll never see eye to eye with people who “hate her” and constantly tear this girl down. Do you have to like her music, absolutely not, that’s completely optional. But in my opinion she does deserve to be where she is tonight. She does not have one singular song she has a whole EP that just released. Obviously she’s just starting out as her career just took off, so why can’t we give her a chance to evolve like we did so many other artists this year….

@@Noname-yc5wm Maybe she just so happens to be humble. We need to see that in more performers these days. Too many narcissists whose egos overcompensate for what little talent most of them have (and Gayle actually does have more talent than several of them. I mean, Machine Gun Kelly can't even sing his way out of a garbage bag)

The AMA'S was predictable, boring and whitewashed. They want our culture and talent but not from us. We are not letting the AMA'S slide for the disrespect and disregard to the culture and people. I have loved Taylor and have been a fan of her music from the start of her career. However, at the risk of coming across looking like a keyboard warrior, I have some concerns. There was a situation where she took to Twitter to say that a Netflix show, Ginny and Georgia, had made a sexist joke at her expense (re her going through lots of boyfriends). It's fine that she wanted to stand up for herself in that way, but when Swifties began attacking the actress who delivered the line with racist slurs and LITERAL THREATS OF DEATH in response to Taylor’s tweet, it’s outrageous that she didn’t say something. This was a big news headline. Taylor was “feminist” enough to defend her own name (in the name of her very self-serving brand of feminism) but disappeared when attacks turned ugly and racist. That's not real feminism. I can't be convinced she and her team didn't know about this. It was a big news story and it took place as a direct result of her tweet defending herself. Also, if your feminism isn’t intersectional, it’s not shit.
It’s hypocritical to claim feminism in defense of yourself but to throw your hands up and walk away when death threats and racist comments are being hurled at another woman. That’s bullshit. I don’t think I’m being unreasonable to say that in light of the events that unfolded after Taylor’s tweet, her cries of “feminism” ring hollow.
She has a long history of this type of self-serving and politically tone-deaf behavior, including when her team threatened a blogger with legal action (serving a cease-and-desist) for arguing that Taylor should denounce the white supremacist fans who called her their Aryan Goddess and insisted that she shared their beliefs. She literally could have sent that cease-and-desist to the Alt-Right groups making those claims in the first place. It’s disturbing that the person she chose to threaten w legal action was the one saying she should denounce the LITERAL HATE GROUP rather than the people OF that hate group claiming she shared their beliefs.
Despite my love of her as a creative entity, these incidents have recolored my opinion of her. As a result, she feels evil to me. I know she has that disarming/charming personality and she is definitely charismatic, but I feel like that causes people to look past things like these incidents, and that’s a problem. As a long time fan I’m very disheartened and disillusioned by this. 😭
is a taylor swift fan, you make some really valid points. tbh i was always annoyed for her because it seems like the media attacks women for so much miniscule things. But your right, as a good person it is a our responsibility to defend others when they are being wrongfully attacked and we have immense power to stop it. plus it’s annoying asf for people to tear down the actress as if she came up with the script🧐🙄🙄. But thats how the world works we are only brave enough to go after the least powerful person in a given situation not the powers behind that need to be dismantled. It would be very inspiring of her to defend h that women :/. And your definitely write taylor is CHARMING ASF very attractive in personality and a word wizard. Im usually weary of people like that irl but having those qualities as a celebrity is probably a good portion for why shes so successful. Charisma is a trap. I really do hope that she is a decent person at the core though its hard to say for sure.

Another thing that’s interesting to me is that despite her indignation at the line, no one capitalizes on her many relationships and speculation around them by fans more than Taylor Swift. Fans go on Easter egg searches to decode her lyrics in the hope of finding out who inspired the song. So she capitalizes off of it and it’s an essential part of her brand, but she gets mad when people take notice of it? I didn’t find the comment to be particularly sexist. It’s more just based in fact. And I don’t agree that that double standard really exists. People talk about George Clooney having lots of girlfriends. It feels like she’s using feminism as a marketing ploy and not because she truly believes in it. And it feels like she gets applauded for her “activism”, which is really in my view entirely self-serving. Even if you make an anti-racist statement here or there, if you talk the talk but don’t walk the walk, it means nothing. She made some statement about promising to be “loudly and ferociously antiracist”, but that really fell flat for me after the Ginny and Georgia incident. To this day she has not addressed it.
If you’d like, let me know your thoughts on whether or not you think that double standard exists (of women dating lots of men vs men dating lots of women) Maybe I’m being unfair to dismiss it. I really would love to know your perspective. (OMG THIS is exactly the type of conversation I was hoping to start. Not one where I’m literally being bullied. 😭😅)
A commenter on another video said that not speaking up against the racist hate in the Ginny and Georgia situation doesn’t make Taylor less of a feminist, and I was flabbergasted. Feminism should be intersectional. That means seeking justice for women of color, trans women, literally ALL types of people who identify as women. Racism 1000000% has a place in ANY conversation about feminism because feminism is an equality movement. Idk if you have ever heard the term intersectional feminism but I’m obsessed w feminist literature and could definitely recommend some good reads. Another commenter said “well if she said something bad about Taylor why should Taylor come to her defense? I wouldn’t either.” And I was appalled. We are talking literal death threats here. We are waaay too desensitized in this Stan culture if this is how so many people feel. This is not even remotely okay!
