I went to SERE school in 2017 with this chaplain! He preached to the whole class and spread the gospel message. Back then I was a Protestant. Now I’m Catholic. God Bless him!

I have, and continue to serve, for more than 17 years and have found Chaplains bring humanity and care to what could otherwise be a dystopian environment - if only in the extreme instances. Thank you to all Chaplains for their service and tending to our spiritual needs.

Amen brother! On deployment, I was always at peace when the Chapain and his RP would tag along with us during convoys to hit different FOBs. We would receive communion out in the afghan desert. That part felt very raw, despite being in combat that we still had time for Christ.Thank you for this channel, much love

Thanks to the Chaplins Corp my sons recovery would have been completely different. He was in Landstul Germany 2 months, Walter Reed 3 months. He lost a lung to a Compression Blast to the chest. The medical staff healed him, the chaplains saved him through Gods hand , and gave me my support to be strong for my son. God bless.

I served in the Navy. I was denied my right to practice my faith and attend holy mass during deployment in 2018-2019. That was the main reason I only served for one contract. God bless the men that act on the calling to priesthood.

And God bless our military including the chaplains. He saw combat; his job was to protect Father Nasser and they were on the front lines everyday. They said Mass in the field everyday. I thank God my husband survived to come home. Thanks for this episode. I really enjoyed it.

My Favorite Band of Brothers scene - Guarnere praying the rosary just before Easy Company drops into Normandy. I am a Navy submarine vet, and priests were few and far between. My job was Extraordinary minister of the Eucharist when we were submerged for weeks at a time. This was in 84 and 85 when the military was served by the Vicariate for the Military services as part of the Archdiocese of New York. As I recall, the Archdiocese for Military Services was created by JPII in 1986.

Navy officer here. Chaplains are a great asset to the fleet. Some can be very hit or miss, but their services are invaluable. Most recently, I served with an Episcopalian Chaplain from the Royal Navy, and he was incredible. Nevertheless, we do need more Catholic Chaplains!

The American Military, especially the Marines, have always been over-represented with Catholics, but the number of Catholic Chaplains is decreasing dramatically. This is doubly tragic because Catholic Chaplains have historically been seen as the Best and the Bravest: think of MOH Recipients and Soon to be Saints: Fathers Kaupon and Cappodanno!

Sadly, we don't even have a single Catholic military priest to serve our New Orleans military parish, much less a Catholic chaplain. They have had to hire a local civilian priest to serve mass for years. And we have had a protestant chaplain for 20 years now. 😔

Coincidentally I almost met the Arch Bishop of the Military. Long story short, I went through MCRD Parris Island, SC. I got hurt about a month into training and for personal reasons at the time, regrettably ended up separating. I discharged a week before my company graduated. I will testify and cannot stress enough how important Military Chaplains are to everyone involved! I found myself in a rather trying position while I was there, and it was one I never thought I would ever find myself in. I have to give thanks to the Chaplain of the 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, Fr. McMillan! He is an amazing priest and having gone to a few of his Religious ed sessions, it brought some reprieve from what I had going on in my personal affairs there and at home! From boot camp/ OCS, whatever capacity you serve in, all the way through to the end of your Military career, there is always a Chaplain available! They are there for you, to listen to you and help you through whatever you have going on! It’s a true blessing to have these men and women to help you bear whatever cross you’re carrying during your Military journey and you will never forget them for what they did for you in your trials and moments of greatness!!

Your comments about find that soldier from your base somewhere else remained me of a similar story. It’s was Father Tom, at Holy Spirit In Va Beach. One Sunday his sermon starts by telling us he’s finally received the okay from the Bishop to serve. 15 years later I’m working as a software consultant in Guam and decide to attend mass on the Naval Base. I thought right away there seemed be some similarities in his mass from St. Cecilia’s, so I waited and asked at the end mass and sure enough it was Father Tom.

Unfortunately, due to the general priest shortage in the U.S. and the world, there are military bases with no Catholic chaplain, and they still end up depending on the local civilian community. That is not necessarily a problem, simply a shame. When I was stationed at Vance AFB in Enid, Oklahoma, we had a Catholic chaplain for awhile, but eventually the position was left empty with the DOD’s apologies. I found a home church downtown, but I lived on base, and I missed having a chaplain as part of my military community with a common core of experience. I became mildly envious of the USAF Protestants on base who had a chaplain at the Base Chapel. I retired in the local area from there 22 years ago, and they still don’t have a Catholic Chaplain. They claimed there were not enough Catholics to justify a chaplain, but I recall the Masses always full. We were also told we could use the Protestant chaplain, but they cannot administer sacraments (Communion, Confession, etc.). Oh well, we had a great church downtown that I fell in love with. I suppose that is all that really matters. Saint Francis Xavier Church is wonderful.

Thanks for sharing since I had suspicions of the overall priest shortage affecting chaplaincies. I wonder if this specific situation would improve, if married men were still eligible for ordination to the priesthood? Married deacons really step up in parishes without pastors (specifically assigned parish priests) but they still can't hear confessions & absolve sins or consecrate the Communion species (but they can still celebrate Eucharistic services)

My father fought with the Army company that Father Colgan was with. Father Colgan was an amazing priest and so well loved by the men. He insisted on going out into the jungle to find any wounded soldiers after one of the bloodiest battles of WW2 in the Philippines He didn't come back and when they found him he was dead beside a fallen soldier. My father helped carry his body out of the jungle. .

I sent in a comment but I don’t think it posted.
Thank you for your service to our country and the soldiers in the Army.
My daughter was contracted with the Army through ROTC Indiana University. She went to university on a full 4 year ROTC scholarship. She won loads of awards. She went to officer boot camp at Fort Knox and said that her Catholic Chaplain there was awesome and gave them so much support to make it through the program.
In her senior year at IU the Army required ROTC contracted people to get the Covid shot. My daughter objected to the shot. ( The shot was developed by using fetal retina tissue). She wanted a pass on the shot. She even went back to Fort Knox at her own expense to defend her position to the chaplain (who was Jewish). He was so impressed with her and told her she was the first person he believed was actually legitimately objected. In the end, the Army found it easier to honorably discharge her on a medical condition than give her a pass on the Covid shot.
Where were you Catholic Chaplains when the Catholic soldiers needed you to stand up for them and stand up for their objections to the shot? Why weren’t you protecting your flock? I do feel a great deal of disappointment for all those fine soldiers who were released from service due to their objections over the Covid shot. It was also a huge financial loss for the USA as so much money is poured into each soldier’s training.

How do I get in touch with Fr. Peter? I don’t have social media. I would love to have him come talk to a group of youth.

The powers that be, keep cutting the religious budget due to declining attendance. I've heard they want to eliminate all religious expenses from the military. We attend Mass on base. It's almost all retirees. 😢 it was the same at Camp Pendleton.
