Well I heard about your hometown,
From my cousins who live there,
And I heard about the gold found,
Enough for everyone to share.
I heard about the numbers,
And I heard they were high,
Nobody likes to talk about it,
But everyone knows why.
You keep saying to me I'm alright
You keep saying to me I'm fine
But I can see it in your eyes
They never took you to Toronto
You never been down to Detroit
Talk about chemical valley
And you never seem to care
As we sit by the wall
in your room in Brandon Hall, tonight.
You can tell in this light,
they're just old bricks painted white, tonight.
And you know in your bones,
this might never feel like home, tonight.
403-401-402,
you're on the run tonight.
Fun fact: The line "403, 401, 402 you're on the run" refers to the Canadian highway system. These are the highways that one would take to get from Hamilton, Ontario (where the band is from) to Michigan.
Wasn't originally an Arkells fan till I heard this one on the radio, and I just stood there stunned - I knew exactly what they were singing about and it was stunning to hear it acknowledged out loud. My family came from a city in Ontario, not Sarnia (or aamjiwnaang?) like the song is about, but "I heard about the numbers/and I heard they were high/nobody likes to talk about it/but everyone knows why" could just as easily be about my family's city. This is true folk music, it may have a pop-rock sound but this speaks profoundly to the stories that shaped life in our province. And it amazes me how they can write these songs that don't sound political at first listen but are really deeply, deeply critical of our political climate when you read between the lines. Really sunk in for me lately that Max (?) is a special breed of lyricist. Sorry for the rant but I just can't believe I slept on them back in the day.
Okay, I came into the conclusion that Arkells make really nostalgic-sounding music. This one reminds me of old Christmas parties. The one with everyone in it. So beautiful. Thanks guys.
This song brings me so many good memories, they have this cd in air canada so while I was in my plane returning to my home town in mexico after 1 whole year leaving in Toronto, I heard the whole cd and I became a great fan of Arkells, I showed this great music to my friends and they felt in love too!!!
I had never listened to Arkells before I saw them with Lights in Denver and they are probably one of my favorite live shows I have ever seen. Ever since that night I have been in love with this band. So amazing!
Love this album! Arkells are going to be one of Canada's most legendary bands! Glad to be a fan from the start of it all.
Saw them last night for the second time, and they never fail to impress me!
Every time I think I'm over the Arkells, I hear Michigan Left and Jackson Square and my love is rekindled. #Mcmaster
