For anyone trying this, you have to start the game in Tennis and walk around. The level counter is associated with the number of steps you took in Tennis.
The Game Genie codes that I still have memorized to this day can achieve the same effect: YSAOPE YEAOZA ?EAPYA Change the ? to any letter of the Game Genie "alphabet" to add 0-7 or 128-135. Change the E after it to every other letter to add multiples of 16. And lastly change the A at the end to an E to add 8.
This only works on a famicom or top loading nes. It won’t work on a front loader unless you’ve disabled the CIC lockout chip. What’s happening behind the scenes is that SMB doesn’t clear ram when it starts. And by holding A + Start, the NES reads the memory address for the world from ram and starting there. By using tennis to edit that memory address, you can load arbitrary worlds
I wonder if this works on the Super Mario/ Duck Hunt cartridge. On a similar note, the Super Game Boy has a way to transfer the border of a SGB game onto a non SGB game. Plug in and power on, say, Mega Man V, then at any point remove Mega Man V and insert, say, Alleyway, then after a few seconds press reset. You'll be able to play Alleyway with the Mega Man V border. The color shade will look funny, at the start but you can still change it as usual. Don't do this with any battery game or you'll likely have all your data erased.
Bad memories when I removed Sonic 2 cartridge from my Game Gear just to see what would happen, screen display shrunk to half size, seized up and after that my Game Gear never worked again.
Nintendo is stronger console that game gear but by doing what he did up above, it will be 100% damage since it will reduce the life span of both does 2 cartridge and the Nintendo console, the more often you do it the shorter the life span. it would be safer to do it with a game genie cartridge. Game Gear kind of suck just because you cartridge is too dusty, it permantely brick your game gear console.
@@deusprogrammer_thekingofspace Wait so you’re saying it didn’t happen?! Ok, I have absolutely nothing to gain by my comment and it’s 100% accurate to what happened regardless of what you think. Have a wonderful day
They always warn you to be sure to power off the system before taking a cart out. But I don't think it could really damage the system or game. Besides, the NES is built like a Sherman Tank.
That’s pretty weird! I don’t have a top loader or a Tennis cartridge so I couldn’t do this trick. I noticed the world at around the 6:00 mark is basically 4-2. I wonder if the vine that normally leads to the world 8 warp is in there, and if so I wonder if climbing it will loop the level or some other weird thing.
I don't know but doesn't yanking out cartridges without turning the NES off damage the system? There was a similar trick on the original Genesis with Ghouls And Ghosts that you could play the Japanese version of the game. Anyway cool if dangerous trick.🤔
Warning doing this as 100% chance of damaging both Cartridge, and also the Nintendo entertainment system console, only do this if you are rich and can buy replacement no matter how expensive they get.
Just like anything thing it slowly wares and depends on the batch quality. Maybe his 30 yrs but you got the thin out defect unotice system with thin contacts so on or to think that it scratches the cartridge pins.Any thing can happen but jt can last by this guys 30 yr old system my guess thumb of rule of any electronic.
Good way to fry your NES! Do this at YOUR OWN RISK! Seriously, we heard about stuff like yanking Altered Beast out of your Genesis and inserting another cart without powering off from Game Pro as kids. Never would I be stupid enough to do it.
we need to rip the rom off the cart and find/crack the code's to pull the levels to fix and play on pc or hand held we need that rom asap please nerds help us out lol
The real lost levels
haha
ima go get tennis just to get this

Now I'll have to buy Tennis! and Mario... and get an NES... maybe I'll just live vicariously through this video.

You can also put a code in the game genie that does the same thing.
Oh noes, Tennis carts are gonna be selling for $100 now! 😮
The curse of UA-cam retro channels. Once a tuber talks about a game, the games shoot up in price. Thus leaving the rest of us to use repros.
They already been going up but yeah you're right lol. Better buy two.
Imagine figuring this out by accident back in the day, lol.
Yes original hardware and games were built pretty tough. I’ve owned my top loader 30 years plus along with the games. They will outlast me.
Love the little CRT / DVD combo by the way.
Thanks, John!
The 2 songs playing at once is jarring.
glad too see you amused and enjoying this John
I hope you have enjoyed Retrocon, Brasil and everything else down here! Cheers...
So many questions!! Who figured this out?? and why Tennis of all games??!! 😆🙃
Witchcraft in Nes

That's crazy. I guess I gotta buy a Tennis cartridge. lol
Unlock all the worlds with John Hancock and Mario

Game gear sucked anyway. Hopefully that made your parents go and buy you a Gameboy
This is so cool, now I wish I still had my NES lol
Must be hard on the system and carts doing this.
Nah, original hardware and games were built pretty tough. I’ve owned my top loader 30 years plus along with the games. They will outlast me.
Still, it would be best with a romhack and a world select.

It’s just two games loading into memory at the same time. Not going to hurt it. Just confusing af lol.
For all intents and purposes this was the "original randomizer"!
Awesome! How did I never know of this before.
Ya That different for sure. Cool stuff!
🤯mind blown.
I've been playing this game my whole life and this is the firs time i have heard of this. Great video!
I remeber this one, it's lots of fun like a gacha game when you don't know what you'll get.
Thanks John, good one.
Super fun 🎉
hope that controller has medical insurance i can hear its vertebral cracking
Really sweet trick! Guess I need to pick up a copy of Tennis now

Sitting here on a rainy day, watching rick steiner hack smb. Crazy!
pretty cool
back in time i had a multicard with levelselect on smb1
John I need your refurbished Wonderful 101!
That is bizarre. How do people find these thing? Thanks for the video, John.
Excellent video
42 years old and I learn something new about my all-time favorite games almost every day!😊❤
oh yes! Tennis carts are gonna be selling for $100
How did we know about this in the 80s
Can you do this with the Super Mario Brothers/ Duck Hunt Cartridge or does it has to be the Super Mario Bros stand alone cartridge?
It's weird how people find out how to do certain hacks and tricks by accident lol
Yes dangerous.
What?
Nice!
It would be cool if this worked in emulation as I don't own a NES console anymore.
Mario bros after you eat the wrong type mushroom.
Is there a way to do this on an emulator?
256 is a telling number.
666 would be more telling!
Your the King. Well this only work on a top loader? Has anybody tried it on an AVS? I dont have any top loaders at the moment 😢

Not dangerous.

Dose this work with any other games??
How on Earth do people figure this out?
I'm going to guess insider secrets by the Nintendo developers.
Is your controller in a bag of doritos? I can't be the only one who noticed the crinkly buttons.

I love this shit
Will this work on a Retron 2 or 3 ?
Interesting
Does this damage the console or the cartdrige?
Well I have done this on mine and have owned this for over 30 years. I can’t speak for anyone else but I have had no issues.

I don’t think so

Okay... Who the fart spent time to figure that out? Lol
How did someone figure this out?
This is a very old trick found and posted 1986?
How could you duplicate this with an emulator?
How is this possible? What exactly is going on?
Does. Anyone hear the original nes music overlapping with the UA-camrs background music. That's kinda driving me nuts cause they don't sync
Does that work on the Analogue Nt?
Why the hell would I do this and completely mess up my top loader console?
Hmm, I don’t see how this would mess up your console. Any proof that it will with links?
Cool video. I haven't seen these warps in a long time. Good memories 👍
