Discovering 8000 Years of Treasure in Taiwan

  • Taiwan's National Palace Museum in Taipei is home to a collection of nearly 700,000 artifacts that cover an incredible span of more than 8000 years of Chinese history. It's the biggest collection of Chinese artifacts and artwork in the entire world. The story of how the museum came to be is a dramatic one and it doesn't start in Taiwan. The collection was originally housed in China's Forbidden City, but during the tumult and panic of the Chinese Civil War, it was moved en masse to Taiwan for safekeeping. I was surprised - and delighted - to discover what the museum's top two attractions are. They're not necessarily what you expect but, upon reflection, make perfect sense. Hint: don't visit on an empty stomach. Watch the video to explore one of the world's greatest treasure troves.

Totally delightful video! I enjoyed seeing items you especially liked...it’s a great way to highlight special artifacts in a measured way. It is true the Taiwan National Palace museum got more things comparing to the Beijing counterpart. I was there in Beijing 2016 I honestly didn't see a lot of display like the Taiwan one does.
BTW, I was so fascinated about that " Fat Pork " look alike rock, it looks so REAL!
I don't know you've ever been to Xiao Liuqiu in Taiwan, it is an island by Ping Dong, nice sandy beach, crystal clear water, tons of colorful fishes, good for swimming as well as diving. If you do go there you won't be sorry & please make a video of it.

Yes, the meat rock does look quite real! We actually did visit Xiao Liuqiu and it was a total highlight for us. It makes repeated appearances in a lot of our videos that are in our Taiwan series here: bit.ly/TaiwanPlaylist. This video is totally different from your previous Taiwanese videos and I like it. Taiwan's National Palace Museum is one of my favourites museums and my favourite treasure is Jade Cabbage. How about you? Which one is your favourite treasure in Taiwan's National Palace Museum?

I'm glad you enjoyed it! I put a lot of my favourites in the video - and it's hard to choose - but I really loved seeing the long scroll come to life with animation. It was fascinating and such a cool way to connect the past and the present. I also loved the jadeite cabbage!! So delicate ❤️

😍My favor museum in Taipei..... Gold, silver, copper and iron, paintings and writings time crossing in thousand thousand years....through many dynasties. The animation of “Spring Dawn in the Han Palace” (漢宮春曉) is new to me...well done! Rather than the life in the Palace, I favor “Along the River during the Ch’ing-Ming Festival” (清明上河圖)showing the life and customs in the capital city of Sung Dynasty. 😍

I recommend the restaurant at the museum. Yes it's pricier than street food, but it serves many traditional Taiwanese dishes in a nicer sit down setting with foreigner friendly menus and servers. If you are afraid to go to hole in the wall places to try street food, this is good place to try it.
