  • On August 10th, an Air Tindi de Havilland Canada Dash 7 flew into the Abbotsford Airshow with a cabin full of aviation enthusiasts.
This was a charter flight organized by Henry Tenby as a way for a bunch of people to fly on a very rare Dash 7, and of course, I had to be on board!
We flew in early in the morning in time for the show to start, and left right after the Snowbirds finished their performance. See what it's like to fly on this classic STOL airliner, with two high-performance takeoffs and landings!

I see C-GFFL every day when it is back in Yellowknife. I work at Air Tindi. The DHC-7 are amazing aircraft. We have 4 of them. Thank you for documenting the flight and Air Tindi.

What a great video. It looks like Air Tindi really looks after their planes. That interior and cockpit were immaculate.

Every couple of years they pull out all the interior panels and overhead baggage compartments and repaint them. They get scratched up hauling freight to the diamond mines in the north so they give them some extra care when needed.

Worked on those aircraft for 13 years in Greenland, before they sold some of them them to Air Tindi, what a machine. Solid piece of engineering, except for the engines. The normally bomb proof PT6's weren't quite up to the task in the -50 version. Brings good memories this. (happily forgotten all the menial tasks and long hours on it)

It's mind blowing that a four engined aircraft of this size has a stall speed of 56 knots, especially since a tiny Cessna 182 has a stall speed of 54 knots.

*Thank-you for sharing this with us, Alex.* It would have been nice if the weather had cooperated and you were able to spend more time in Abbotsford. As usual, your video sent me on a research spree, but one other thing I did was to check out just how short of takeoff and landing you all got for your money. Some might think I’m over the edge here with aviation geekiness, but face it; anytime you tell us that your lumberjack sized body can comfortably sit in an airplane, it is time for me to check this flying machine out!
I would be most remiss if I did not extend a heartfelt appreciation of you panning the Dash-7 to reveal details in HD that I have not seen published! This is exactly the type of information about aircraft on which I feed (from about @13:05 to @16:09)! Then your obtaining permission and videoing the cockpit view of your trip back to Vancouver was a complete stroke of genius and quick thinking on your part. Along with your inclusion of the picture in picture editing of the return trip, you contributed to Dash-7 details I was not able to discover in my research. As far as I am concerned, you made history with this video.
The Dash-7 is indeed a phenomenal piece of engineering. I believe if de Havilland Canada had the financial backing of Airbus and Boeing, it could have turned the Dash-7 into a very profitable aircraft for itself and commercial aviation. Furthermore, if my job is flying into areas north of the arctic circle, where there is nothing but the occasional lost polar bear, I certainly would feel more comfortable having 4 engines. For all who are aviation enthusiasts, the Dash-7 is worth spending some time in research and learning about this most wonderful piece of aerodynamic engineering.
Let me conclude with something I found amazing when I compared your video with published specifications about the Dash-7. I have no idea who it was that published the minimum takeoff and landing data, but they are as wrong as a football bat. According to what I was able to find, the average data is ~700 meters (~2,300 feet) for both takeoff and landing. By comparing your video footage with the “Google” map views of both the runways used at Vancouver and Abbotsford, here is what I discovered:
    Vancouver takeoff: ~365 m (~1,200 f).
    Abbotsford landing: ~215 m (~700 f).
    Abbotsford takeoff: ~325 m (~1,066 f).
    Vancouver landing: ~266 m (~875 f).
All I can say to keep this a family oriented comment is, “Wow!!!”
Alex, again words elude me as I try to explain my gratitude for the time and effort you made to video and publish this production. I have rarely seen such thoughtfulness to one’s subscribers and viewers on other commercial aviation posts. Please continue your great work, for it is not wasted on me. As you can see, I do my best to capture every detail of your posts.

I have to say that the -7 performance is impressive. In 1970, when the -7 was in pre-production, I was involved in a program in the San Francisco Bay Area called NorCalStol. The idea was to provide city center to city center air travel in STOL aircraft. I was flying Helio Couriers and Britten Norman Islanders into close in large parking lots in various cities. The DeHaviland reps were there showing drawings and proposed performance figures for the -7. It turned out to be an idea that was before its time; developers wanted the land for more buildings. I'd like to see the -7 resurrected. The plane makes sense.

Great vid, the 'powerback' was just the pilot showing off, the Dash7 is specifically designed to turn 360deg in its own foot print. A skilled pilot with the nose gear in free caster and proper engine control can actually get the Dash7 to spin in a manner where one main gear is rolling forward the the other is rolling backwards. We called it alien technology!

Whow that brought back memories, we used to fly in those on Oilfield charters, they were operated by Brymon Airways for Chevron, between Aberdeen and the island of Unst (Baltasound) the most northerly of the Shetland group.
The strip was 640 m long (2100ft) yes they were STOL alright. Good times.

I once worked for Delta Airlines in Atlanta in the 90's. I was always amazed, I mean, just amazed at the slow approach speed of the Dash 7's into Hartsfield. They seemed to just hang in the air and I would not have been surprised if you told me that they were just dangling from a cable slowly lowering them to the ground.

I was one of the first (male) Flight Attendants certified/ qualified on the Dash8 back in 1978 when I flew for Air Pacific, which later was acquired by Gem State Airlines of Idaho. They brought their fleet of four CV580’s enabling me to fly either plane. I liked the DASH for it’s newness (enclosed overhead compartments!), but the 580 was a beast and the highlight of my day was opening and closing that awesome integral stairs front door. The merged carrier (Golden Gate) grew super fast but then the PATCO strike hit and that was the end after the controllers were fired. If you search for N9058P that was my very first plane...I then went on to have an incredible 32 year career with Continental. Thanks for taking me back to how it all began!-Bryan Smiley, Palm Springs California.

I had the special experience with to fly with Berjaya Air in Malaysia from Kuala Lumpur Subang to Tioman island. First of all the Dash 7 is special and second special is the airport of Tioman island. The day I was flying it was not so good wind situation in Tioman. That's why the pilots made 4 go arounds at the first time. Then we head to Johor Bahru for refuling. After that we head again to Tioman. Performing another 5 go arounds. So we head second time to Johor Bahru for refuling. It was already late afternoon so that's why pilots told us, that they will try it one more time and if it will not work, then we will fly back to Subang airport. At around 8 pm we landed in Subang. Reason for this was stronger tail wind than allowed at Tioman. On the next day wie landed at Tioman with the first aproach. This was really awesome trip.

I changed my A/C flight from Edmonton to Grande Prairie to Pacific Western (I believe) Dash 7 just to say I had ridden one. I loved the 4 engine turboprops because it reminded me of the old Electra,. Viscount, Britannia, and Vanguard days. I still miss them although the current Q 400 comes about as close as one can get. Great video. Thanks very much. I bet you had a blast!

Always thought the -7's four engine design was an oddity when the -8 after it had two. But I suppose that was due to the higher power Pratt PW120 series engines being available.

@@adrianwapcaplet2773 I mention it so that newer viewers don't see me crammed into a seat and assume that's normal for everyone, but I agree, it gets a bit tedious for the repeat viewers. Will change it up.

I recall many years ago, the twin engine dash had problems with landing gear so Danish students put up a fun video where we had to try to get airborne with out the gear falling out:)

Alex...glad you enjoyed that nice flight! Dont forget the incredible amount of fun everyone can have with a monster pc and xplane 11...using VR headsets makes it as real as possible today...no longer an arcade flight simulator! And get this...the Dash 7 is available for xplane 11, so now you can fly this four engine wonder yourself in vr! Everything is available to fly, GA, helicopters, jets, from piper cub to A380's! Heres the link to the dash 7...forums.x-plane.org/index.php?/files/file/41882-dash-7-150-for-x-plane-11-ver/
