Winston has refused for a long time to go down the stairs and we have resorted to just carrying him down all stairs .. We got in touch with a behaviour expert who gave us some really helpful information which has got Winston going down the stairs all by himself! So we'll share this information with you to try and help anyone out there who is struggling with the same issue.

Tbh those stairs do look really steep. I too might need some training to get down a hazard like this.

My pug is 10 months, and she will NOT go down the stairs. She will walk up them, but when she’s on top of the stairs she will cry! X

A lot of people have said cow .. I questioned myself and had to watch it back. definitely said cat! Be strange if a cow was just walking down the street! 😂😂

Taught my darling toy poodle sitting on each stair with her...took around an hour for five stairs.... after doing same every day for a week she finally came down on her own 🇦🇺💕

My pug did the same, but every time we went down we picked him up and put him on the bottom step, then the second bottom etc. After a month or so he started doing it by himself and now he’s confident in it! Not that that’s always a good thing ahha!🤦🏽♀️🥰xx my Winston is almost 1 year old xx
Confidence is what caused Winston to become scared! It's definitely not always a good thing 😂

".. it's getting better, he's getting better, still mental but he's getting better". Hahaha. Winston looked like a little cloud in your arm when you were carrying him as a baby. So cute.

Thanks! We have a 5 yr old lab mix Rusty - just moved to a new apt a flight up - he’s as scared as Winston - have been trying this but not long enough or consistently - thanks for posting!!!!
Our pug is 6 months old and he will fly up and down all stairs EXCEPT the stairs to our basement. They are the exact same type where they curve at the top, and he fell down a couple of steps on the narrow section when trying to run by me when he was younger. Thanks for his video! I’m going to try these tips

You've done a great job with Winston, luckily my dogs don't have this problem but it's good advice to know. My beagle wees excitedly but since he's got older it seems to have stopped for the most part, he will have the occasional accident bit much better than when he was a puppy

Our pug is 12 weeks and I taught him by sitting down on the steps, one at a time with him. 1st step is scary to him and I gently helped him. Now he knows it's safe. He's fierce, lol. I love you Milo, lol 🐕🐶😂

My two late pugs both started the same way, slightly reluctant to go down stairs. But going up no problem. Well I have a CDL and going down a mountain pass in a simi truck scared the crap out of me.

My dog just turned 7 and suddenly became afraid of going down the stairs. His nails were long and hair was long so I'm sure he slipped one day. He can go down the stairs if I put him at midpoint, but will not take that first step. I'm going to be much more patient with him and place a treat on the first step until he gets it on his own time. This video gave me hope! thanks

It took about a week to teach my pug pokey to go down our stairs I found that starting from the bottom and going up works best and treats and praise every step he took, then I'd shift to moving him in the middle of the steps not to far from the bottom at first until he got the hang of it then you can use toys or treats to lure and distract him from the fears of it
