A little bit of trivia here: Italians are presently the only Archer civ that has Redemption. Every other Archer civ lacks it so that they can be countered by Mangonels. Chinese used to be in that category, but they lost Redemption after getting Block Printing.
At least food is cheaper in italy compared to argentina... which makes no sense since we're massive producers but you know. Corrupt feudalism does this to a nation.

This might disappear beneath the comments: But as someone who really likes goofing about with Italy, my favourite go to is early scout rush to cause trouble in the enemies' camps then when in castle age, pick up pavise instantly and begin Genoese production. Its probably not the greatest plan, but its fun and creates a high energy mood in the game that helps transition well into the slow, almost siege line style, Castle Age on Italian style I play with Bombards, Castles & Genoese to hold back threats.
Italians were always a favorite civ of mine. I really enjoy using gunpowder units and their cheaper upgrades and gunpowder units really incentivize mixing in some gunpowder units into your army. So that really helpes me like the Italians a lot more. That and their two really cool unique units.
Literally gave a quiet “YES!” when I saw you’d redone the Italians. The old one was hideously dated, and Italians are just a really fun civ to play with all their counter units, a less defensive and more punchy Byzantine flavor.

In team game closed maps, they're super underrated, going fc into genoese is so strong because the genoese is a borderline OP unit for the crossbow-knight meta.
Italians are a great Michi civ, countering the most common units we see on those maps (knights, bbcs ,gunpowder and massed onagers). Their only kind of weakness is they are quite slow. Sorry if I only talk about Michi, but that is what I usually like to play.

I didn't played AoE2 in years ( if not a dacade) yet I still watch almost all of SoTL wideos. I grew to really like his detailed overviews, soothing voice and dry jokes.
And another great transition to a Squarespace add. I wonder if he'll ever run out of those. Also, wonderful to see this new series of reviews. If he'll persevere (not guaranteed), I'll be around for round 3 in 5+ years. This game has already been around from late childhood memories to today, might as well share it with another generation.
you should make a video about a civ *you* would like to see in the game. or a mechanic you'd like to see implemented. Idk i think most people here would love that
for the fising ship bonus, you also have to add the work time of 1 vil you can skip instead of regular civs that need 1 extra vil on wood for constant production. so if you make 5 fishing ships, the savings is more than 55 wood
Sometimes the Italians reminds me of the Goblins of World of Warcraft, because the players came from islands, and had a famous phrase "I got the best deals anywhere!", which ia their racial too giving them discounts overall ( They also like guns and explosions for gunpowder units...). I rally enjoy a italian play with their unique units! Great Vídeo!

i think the imp unique tech should be change for something specific in 1vs1 or 2vs2 and more like a reduction of the cost of the villager from 50 food to 35 good if you are raid but not good if you are attacking so i't balance becaus on imp so you don't make a lot of villager
I'm a bit confused with the ratings for techs: University has all techs exepct one, plus all are discounted. While Siege Engineers is an important tech, is that enough to bump it down to B+? (assuming there would be A-, A and A+ left) Same for the monastry: Only heresy missing, which I don't consider to be the most important tech. Everything else is there. Yes there are no additional bonuses, but is that enough to bump it down that far?
A matchup I recently had problems with is me as Berber vs. Italians. They tend to build Genoese Crossbows and Hussars. I basically have to build Camel Archers to counter cavalry, which are directly countered if not microed properly. And Skirmishers are not very effective since they always attack the cavalry. Any idea how I could counter this mix?
Heavily pressure them in Castle Age to not let them get into Imperial age in a good shape nor get into a healthy Genoese Crossbowmen mass, as that unit kills everything Berbers can do (You can do it with 3 stable knights as with Berbers is not that all in, but 2 stable + siege seems especially smooth) If they get to that mass you probably need to leverage on cheaper Hussars to raid as much as possible, Bombard Cannon trades (You have Siege Engineers, theirs are cheaper) and your Skirms to pick of the Crossbowmen. Italians' win conditions should be either Crossbow powerspike in early Castle as Berbers have to still get going, or the mentioned Genoese mass that is very hard for Berbers to fight in one spot.
Aren't unique techs researched at the castle? (I haven't played for years). Because than the trade car tech is even worse; you sort of have to wait with going big on trade until you have built a castle, and there it slows your capability to amass the crossbowmen.

My preferred core ranged deathball is 50% Genoese Xbow + 50% Hand Cannoneers, adjusted in response to the enemy comp!

Yes, the 2 unique techs are in the Castle.
Keep in mind that if you enjoy pineapple on pizza or if you break the pasta in half before cooking it, you lose those civ discounts and the game too
