    I'm only half way through this, but I freaking LOVE this guy! He really seems to know his stuff, and communicates it so well.

    air pump, or a drum with neck, frets and strings?
    When he tap the 1st top that was a real eye opener, it sounded like a small frame drum!

    I've heard Luthiers tap tone woods before but at 3:48 WOW! that kind of resonance is remarkable!

      I am most curious how an Indian Rosewood back would react to such tapping? He demonstrated others (maple) but IR?

    @paintingglass LOL! yeah, make your own guitar as amazing as a somogyi.... haha i hate to shoot some dreams, but honestly, no one that has not been an apprentice of Ervin, can make a guitar as good as Ervin.

    never thought of it as an air pump

    The guitar back he tapped and had it ring is more than twice the area and three times the thickness, of the piece of maple, I'm not surprised it 'rang' better.

    Do you know how different angles, lengths, thickness of braces effect the tone? if you know, you should post a video of it, please because there are no good videos on youtube that explain it, I have yet to watch part 2 of this, and it may say in there; but it's just an idea.

    lol, "the guitar has to be efficient, unlike the violin, where people can saw away until their arm falls off..." I've never heard of the violin described that way, but it makes physical sense. It just flies in the face of the conventional wisdom of calling the violin the "perfect acoustic instrument."

    Do you mean the word vitreous? It means glossy or glass like and not like the way you use it.

      Tut tut. I think he's meaning that the wood is very high-energy particularly in the higher frequencies (glassy). He uses Wenge wood a lot which is known to be very glassy in the top end.

    @hufschmidguitars1 with more researching i began to understand the values of the materials , time , experience , tap tone etc all that because i wanted an acoustic guitar that give me a kind of sound , of course you cant get that sound from a factory work so u have two choices or you learn building one and experience that by yourself or find a luthier who could deliver you the sound you desire , both ways in real life never get near the 30000 usd with all respect.

    @killxthexsmile - Nonsense! There are lots of luthiers turning out instruments at least as good as, if not better than Ervin's!

  • @paintingglass
    @paintingglass 13 років тому

    @hufschmidguitars1 i didnt forget all what you mentioned , its all true , but still it doesnt justify the price normally , you talking on his 40 years of experience , Martin they had experience long ago before him they never put a price such that , despite its a factory , other luthiers may have less experience from him and make a great guitars i could compare them to his work would cost much less , the point is when i searched for acoustic guitar all i saw big numbers never knew why

    :) i don't know, it's not even that funny, but he pretends to not own this cylindrical shaped "air pump" ('honestly, it's not my bag baby...'). and it turns out he's even written books about them. i think it's the first movie.

    Yeah, the thing is a guitar is not a drum. Nor a speaker cone. Nor a violin. Nor whatever thing this over-engineer says it is.
