Tampa Florida is a super popular relocation destination, but I don't think that the high-paying jobs are leading the way. What do you think?

This is entirely true. We’ve lived in Tampa for 25 years and the hype is real, but where are the jobs? Where’s the affordable housing? People here are really struggling to find affordable housing.

@@frankgarcia1 still much cheaper to buy here than anywhere up north. My property taxes here are 1/4th what they would be in Illinois. I think like any growing city it’s going be more expensive and people will be pushed to move a little further away. In our case we have thrived here so it all depends on industry as well. Finance health care, and tech do really well here.

My family and I moved to Tampa in 2018. Although I absolutely loved living there, the cost of living versus the pay was the worst. We moved to Georgia last year and tripled my salary. We do plan to move back after we retire.

I’m glad you made this video. As a prospective investor for Tampa, and a former SF Tech professional, this was my biggest concern. It seems the SF tech exodus went to Seattle, Austin, Dallas, Miami, and Raleigh. Because the NY hedge funds and SF VCs went to Miami, the startups went there to follow the money. Perhaps interviewing why Cathy Woods chose St Pete’s and what of her companies are doing in Tampa may be interesting.
I’m uncertain that the homes prices and luxury condos can be supported by local wages. Otherwise Tampa seems like a great place to live like you described.

Their are jobs . But, what people don’t understand is your going to need two. One will pay low , but, have great benefits and the second will pay well with no benefits . Now to live their comfortably you have to be making 80k or more and live within your means . The best jobs do. It always mean you need a degree. Sells, trucking , self employed.( Trades do well in all aspects . Uber , IT. Port of Tampa . But, you have to be a hustler or your going to struggle . I am so sad we left , we had the Best Apartment ! I miss Seazon at Rocky Point Apartments( and you get what you pay for ) .Apartments are built much better in Tampa .But, you do have The Cult of Scientology in Clearwater.

I moved to Tampa a year ago with a decent middle class job waiting for me. Things are more expensive and there are very few middle class homes to buy or apartments to rent. Well, they exists but the price is not middle class. Add in higher home and flood insurance and your purchasing price budget shrinks by $50-$100k to afford the $4k+ /year insurance bill. There are touristy things to do but they are all expensive. Tampa looks better on paper than actually living here. Not a bad place so far, just need time to drive everywhere and money to afford to do things when you arrive. Plus things tend to close earlier here than what I am used to.

I purchased a 200K house at Brandon through an online agent (I did not see the house before I bought it) in Feb 2015 after a big snowstorm at Buffalo NY. Now the house worth 500K. What I want to say is sometimes you just have to do it. If Tampa is where you want to live, buy it now. You don’t know what will happen after 5 years. Houses around Tampa Bay are still cheaper than the same quality’s houses at WNY in my opinion.

I'm not in the business world so take my opinion with a grain of salt. But if there's genuinely a lot of young people moving to Tampa, there will be organic job growth, that will eventually lead to high paying jobs. You can't count on exported jobs from huge tech companies and finance companies. But other jobs will be created, especially if a lot of the people moving to Tampa have college degrees. It just might take a while. I say all this because it seems like the Tampa/St Pete area is a good long term investment.

Totally agree use to live in the Greater Tampa Bay area 10 years ago, amazing beaches nice city but no high paying jobs, l have lived in Austin Texas since 2013 and the amount of high paying tech jobs is phenomenal even with the downturn, everyone is in Austin (including Elon Musk) from Apple, Oracle, IBM, Tesla, Samsung, Google, Meta, Salesforce, Amazon AWS, Dell Technologies to name a few. You won’t be out of work long living in either Austin or Dallas, Dallas has more financial services jobs and a huge Microsoft campus. There isn’t a tech presence in Tampa. Property prices are the same in Tampa now with Austin and Dallas without the local high paying jobs

Finally someone makes a video that covers a huge problem in Tampa. I'm a northerner, moved down here making $150K. back up north I topped out at $200K at one point but was making less these last 2 years. I lost my job 4 months ago and it's been hell. I can't tell you how many recruiters have reached out to me and thought I would work for $70K or $80K. it's shocking. also, unemployment in the northeast is $550 a week, in Florida it's $275 a week. who can live on $275 a week? that barely covers food and gas for most people. it just sucks. I love Tampa but have to agree. I feel like all the big paychecks are in Miami. even Orlando doesn't have a lot of high paying jobs. can it change or improve over time? sure. but the need is now, not in 5 years. as for the locals, they'll never be able to afford all the new construction in the area. if you're born and raised in Tampa you probably make $50-75K so new apartments and new condos will never be in your future. so basically in the next 3-5 years Tampa will be half locals, half transplants. only the transplants can afford $3-5K a month for rent or million dollar condos.

If the cost of living keeps going up faster than our wages, I do not believe there will be enough staff to take care of tourists. You need to talk about Florida being the worst at-will employment state. Everyone I know who moves to Tampa. no matter how educated or smart they are, can and did lose a job overnight. For no reason. With terrible unemployment that no one can figure out how to get it. For small fiscal reasons people get canned out of the blue. Other states are slow to pull the trigger and you have time to prepare. Florida
is NOT a state for workers or people who need steady jobs.
ALSO, the highest paying Fed govt jobs in Tampa will not get you a nice lifestyle. You need to discuss housing to income ratio. It is way out of proportion in Tampa. Luxury and housing for the rich is forcing people to live outside of Tampa and commute to work, making driving a nightmare. Even if it appears there are jobs posted, 85% or more of jobs are “ghost jobs.” They never end up hiring anyone. This includes county jobs and city jobs. My attorney said they have been promoting “ghost jobs” for over 20 years. No one knows why. Maybe just to check out the competition or maybe the don’t have good HR staff to manage these postings. You can expect Tampa companies to not hire for their ads, terrible HR, no management, poor benefits, and you will be overworked in many sectors. Because they hire the fewest amount of people. So even if you get paid vacation, there is not staff to cover for you. They try to turn Tampa into the next luxury NYC, but where there are many rich, the services you need are not there. If you are an engineer and you can put up with the backward ways that local government runs things, then you can probably find a job. We always need engineers and doctors. Many physicians keep a business up north and one in Florida in order to have stability. But it’s hard to get an appointment if your doctor is in another state. In general, doctors are leaving Florida due to cost and not enough money. Most people complain of no fine restaurants. No culture. Traffic. I think a lot of Californians have good attitudes to try Tampa, but will eventually go elsewhere. It’s just very muggy and hot. The weather makes people slow and high temps mean more.violence. Florida Commission on Tourism projects a slowing down of tourism over the next. 5 years. The Gov. vetoed a big 500M state Courthouse just outside of Tampa. Florida is bracing itself for less tourism. These are are govt. studies.
