I always found it weird that other countries rank their universities. Here in Denmark, we don't really do that. Only reason one might prefer one university over another is usually because of location and the amount of people attending (or sometimes a certain programme is only offered in one university). Also university is free, and you get paid app. $800 each month for living expenses. I love Korea but I'm glad I grew up and got my education in Denmark. I don't have a father or any grandparents, and my mom is a cleaner at the hospital, so I feel like my future would have looked very different in Korea or the US, for example. I think all education should be free, worldwide. Why? Because only an informed society can make smart decisions, can select smarter leaders, etc.

      interesting prespective,
I am egyptian and I would say they kind of rank it this way because of the funding is different depending on how many foreign students attend (as education is supposingly funded by government here) and also depends on research and university rank internationally.
so I suppose in your country the different isn't that big.

Same here in Germany! There are few situations in which some people might rank universities (mostly for their own needs and wishes) but super rarely for prestige reasons. People sometimes even have a harder time explaining why they still deserve their graduation when they went to an expensive private uni for example 🥹😂 as if their parents simply bought their academic status. But not everyone is like that fortunately c:

The pressure on high school students seems too much for kids. While I get that you want your kids to be successful, everyone grows and matures at a different pace and if you force kids to study constantly instead of expanding their horizons, they won't have a chance to find out what they are good at and will likely end up in a job they hate in a life they hate.
I was lucky enough to have a parent that understood this and my father supported my choice not to go straight into college. Instead, I took my time and found what I wanted to do, which ultimately lead to a more successful college life and a much happier life overall.

Thanks for sharing this! Korean university life sounds interesting, yet all that social pressure (to drink and drink, to join a school club) sounds daunting. Is it ever possible for a Korean university student to *not* do those things? 😅 what if the student can't drink alcohol at all because of a health issue?

  • @Yellow-Rose
    @Yellow-Rose Рік тому +18

That's right Dan. I'm so glad you said that. They're so many other careers out there than just being a Doctor, Lawyer or CEO. The elderly generation is not in touch with this, which is why they think, well, if you're not a doctor or a lawyer then you have to be a ditch digger cuz what else is there? Everybody is smart, talented and gifted in different ways. We need to pay more attention to that. It shouldn't always be about getting super rich. People should get more enjoyment and fulfillment out of their jobs. Korean society needs to relax and not put so much pressure and misery on kids. Life is too short.

There does seem to be alot of pressure for all students in Korea to be academically inclined. Other countries look at a holistic approach to learning. focusing on indivuality and nurturing not just the academic approach to learning, as all children are not the same. The focus of raising children is to allow them to explore what they are good at and supporting them in their choices, whether that requires a University degree or a trades certificate. Trends in employment opportunities are constantly changing where a University degree may not fit what is needed. Some trades will always be needed and quite often there is a higher demand for these skilled individuals, who will quite often make more money than a person with a University degree. Some people seem to think having a University degree, which I have, makes you a smarter individual. I only went to university because I required a degree to work in the field of my choice. It didn't say I was any smarter than someone without a degree. It only said that academically I could achieve this. I knew many trades people who made alot more money than me and didn't have the large student loans to pay back, plus they had more opportunities in the job market. It makes me angry when I hear people say that they would not have a relationship with anyone who didn't have a University degree like themselves. If you look at some of the most successful people, Bill Gates for example, he did not have a University degree and he did just fine. Being individualistic, motivated, creative and have the understanding that thinking 'outside of the box is ok is how children should be raised to become healthy and successful individuals who enjoy what they are doing and ultimately contributing to society.

This was fun to watch. I taught at Korean universities for over 20 years and it's nice to know that things haven't changed much! :D I always loved teaching first-semester freshmen! I watched them turn from high school students to young adults. You were right about the drinking culture, but the students who did the best were the ones who figured out how to balance their study-life with their party-life. One thing you didn't mention was foreign teachers, especially foreign English teachers. Maybe you could do another video with students of all ages talking about the good and the bad of having a foreign English teacher vs a Korean one.

Lol this reminds me of those very old days in senior high school and university. I also went to best 5 uni in indo (or maybe even the best uni). But the struggle to enter the uni OMG. It ruins my health. I have acute gastritis up to now. I also studied days and nights and took so much americanos and oftenly when coffee and red bull didn’t work i ate very young sour mango to keep my eyes open and keep on studying 🧐🥺. Study in uni wasn’t as hard at all as compared to senior high school imho. Btw thanks a lot for sharing. The information will be useful for many ppl here. Those drinking culture with sun bae is so weird btw 😂😂😂. SHINU is smart, isn’t he? Learning English up to fluent level without going abroad unless for vacation. Anyway thanks for the hardwork. Studying in Korea sounds like stress and a must if you want to have a chance in the professional world later on. The job market is tight. So huge pressure and strict timetable. Luckily we have more opportunities to study in Germany. No wonder alcohol is used to reduce stress in Korea.😅 But I think partying is everywhere part of it at that age.😊
I find it increasingly difficult for young pple to choose the right course of study or later career. New technologies and laws are changing jobs faster and faster. Adaptability and constant learning of new topics is important. Unfortunately, I don't know university life itself. I started school earlier and got very good grades, but I had to go to work early for financial reasons. My parents made the choice of my career.😢 Later, I studied while I was working and created additional sources of income because I left home when I was 18 for being independent. Alcohol doesn't always make pple funny.

Danny what about technical/trading schools are they a good option if can’t get into an university. Like here in the States the demand for electricians, welders, plumbers etc. is so high and they get paid as much if not more than anyone with a college degree. Recently while driving I saw a hiring advertisement billboard looking electricians with a sign up bonus of $10k with a hourly pay rate of $60-$80. I was in shock. I know cost of living in Korea is different from here but I live in the country side of PA and cost of living here is cheaper than the big cities and in my town a job that pays you $60-$80 per hour is good money.

Oddly enough, I feel like American high schoolers care less about school than Korean high schoolers, but American college students are much more serious than Korean college students. Maybe it's because most college students are either forced to hold grades for their scholarships or are racking up obscene debt while in college, so they don't have time to party and drink.

What if people are able to enter any university?
Or, does the government help 100% of people to study at college?
Here, it's not expensive to study some careers in some private universities.
So, I would like to know about that part of your society.

Loved this video! I’m currently an expat English teacher in Korea, and while I’ve never been a student here, I am positive that many, if not most, foreign exchange students would appreciate any and all attempts to reach out. Noraebang, dinner, festivals, movies, walk around campus…even after a year living here, any little invitation I’ve received from a Korean (which are few and far between, though I’m not sure it’s fair to compare full-time job schedules with student ones, both are different and produce unique challenges) has been a nice memory, sometimes even a special memory.
In school or in work environments, do you have suggestions how to propose activities with Korean colleagues or people you meet in other social places (like church) and would like to spend time with? Sometimes as the foreigner, I can be shy in trying to propose something, as I’m worried I might make a cultural faux pas, or come across as insistent, or impose on limited free time they would spend with other friends or their personal lives. Also, as a girl, it can be a bit awkward knowing these boundaries as well, especially regarding colleagues who are guys…is it appropriate to propose meetups, is there a specific way recommended, or is it best left avoided or wait to see if it’s proposed by someone else?

Thank you for this fascinating info. So far I've only heard about the long hours in school and really can't imagine having to spend all those hours, unless it's a boarding school. How do the seniors have so much money to treat freshmen? Or is it a different senior everytime? Have not heard of this anywhere else (except in the comment from Bangladesh:)

Thank u for this content❤ very helpful.
U made a video before about dont expect life in korea to b like a kdrama. I was wondering When i watch stray kids candid vids they always show them being very affectionate and cute toward each other , is there any truth or reality to those gestures among korean male friends? Or r idols special cases? Im from the states and that would not b considered normal for guys here. Obviously theres exceptions but in general its not commonly seen. Is being affectionate commonly seen within male friend groups in real life??

Doesn’t alcohol destroy brain cells and is a depressant.Drinking too much every time as a student sets you up for a hard, pathetic middle age and old age that is if you live that long. Alcohol industry wants to capture people as young as possible to make profits. Alcohol doesn’t solve problems but it definitely makes all health parameters worse .Any addiction will make mental health worst.

Hi from USA/guacamolepink: thank you for discussing this topic. Student life sounds so tough! Following Shinu on Instagram, he did so well. A topic or questions I have - Are job interviews done with 3 to 4 candidates in the same room, at the same time, so they can hear each other’s answers? Does the job seeker sit far apart from the interviewer? Do resumes include a picture? Sorry, these are based from K dramas, so I am curious if this is real in life. Thank you.
