Montalbano is up there as ONE OF THE GREATEST SERIES IN TV HISTORY.Wonderful stories, script,acting,scenery,directing,all top top.Bellissimo.I am Scottish,living in London.
One of the best written series I have ever seen ! The development of characters and the interaction between them is absolutely amazing. The stories are well constructed and get you hooked almost immediately. Nothing from America even compares.
When I visited Sicily last year the locals were delighted that I knew about Montalbano and that I watched the show in Australia. I was given a lot of happy hugs!
Totally hooked on Montalbano! Love the back stories that run through each episode, what a gorgeous character Salvo Montalbano is! No foul language or gratuitous violence, just enthralling mysteries and glorious scenery! Bravo!
Oh, there is quite a bit of foul language. From watching the series with subtitles, I've learnt one word and one phrase that should not be uttered in polite society.

Such a wonderful programme, and so thrilled that we can get it here in the UK. Montalbano has inspired casting, brilliant direction and exceptional cinemaphotography. Many series are filmed for tv, but few have international success, and even fewer reach the pinnacle of excellence that becomes classic and timeless. Those that do, have that rare quality , in which every element comes together in sheer perfection. Montalbano is in that category. Can't wait for the next series!
Ah yes the food, Montebano. Loves his coffee and his food.. I often wish I could share some of his meals. Loved all the series, and the typical Italian humour.
I have all of the Montalbano stories on disc, and never tire of watching them. Unlike other series, where one viewing is enough, I always find something new to enjoy each time I come back to it. Each character is perfectly cast, and the actors work so well together that they are totally believable. Apart from the superb scenery, wonderful cinematography, excellent writing and acting, what really makes it for me is the humour that permeates every episode and always seems natural and unforced. Very difficult to carry off successfully. I also have the Young Montalbano series, and thoroughly enjoy them.
Montalbano is helping me through the lockdown here in the UK, I have recently read seven of Camilleri's wonderful novels and watched the early TV episodes again on BBC iPlayer.
I've watched lots of episodes on BBC iPlayer during lock down too here in the northern Scottish Highlands. I've been to Sicily once and watching the episodes of Montalbano has me wanting to return sometime in the future when possible.
clnre agree Montalbano has been a ray of Sicilian Sunshine during this pandemic, hope all 14 Seasons make it onto iplayer. We visited Sicily, couple of years ago & agree about the amazing light.... would love to return one day.
The Montalbano books are fabulous, and they have been recreated amazingly well in the television series. Quite a feat and extremely rare to find a series that is as good as the books.
Montalbano is so damn good, i love the main stories & i love the unrelated stories that they merge with the main stories, such a great show, oh & the locations are just heaven, i have to learn Italian just so that i can really enjoy montalbano as i feel the English subtitles do not do it justice. I must visit the locations as they are to die for, such an amazing looking place, Keep up the great work guys, all of you create a fantastic world for us to be a part of
This wonderful series has seen us through lockdown. Every Saturday night an Indian meal from M&S, a bottle of rose cava and an episode of Montalbano. 😊 And the joy of recognising the places we went to in 2018 when we travelled round Sicily. Thank you.
How or where on which channel do you watch it? So far every episode is only available by amazon.com etc. on youtube can't find it anymore, before in 2019 yes but all is to be seen by abonnement payment?
We absolutely love this series, The characters are whole and rounded with complex personalities which put the wooden cardboard characters of USA dramas to shame. Frankly IMO, it's a great European piece of acting and story telling (MORE BBC)
An exquisite series!! I've only been watching it here in Portugal for almost two years!! What I find extremely interesting in these Montalbano series is the way story unfolds, in other words this is the everyday 's life of an ordinary Italian police commissioner in Sicilia who happens to be a very talented, experienced and intuitive guy and eventually ends up solving the crime. What I find unique is that the main character Montalbano can be seen in any police force with an ordinary life, unlike many other TV series the detective is portraied as almost a superhuman gifts and qualities that we all know are fake!! 👍👍👍
This wonderful series is shown on BBC 4 (in Italian with subtitles) in the UK and is extremely popular. (All episodes are now available on the BBC iplayer btw). In the covid lockdown we watched an episode each evening and it was a huge help and escape during those difficult times. After 36 episodes I am sad it has now ended. Young Montalbano was very good also, I am not sure why they just made two series of those. I had no idea every scene in the police station was filmed in Cinnicetta Studios! Amazing how the actors matched the station scenes from each episode to the all location filming with it flowing perfectly. Superb!
+Richard Salsaduende Everything you see is and be said to be so believable that apart from the odd bunter those events can and do happen as you see it in Montalbano, adding the scenery, way of life and food all too realistic, a typical way of life in those areas more or less. Sherlock , Morse etc. brilliantly made series but too drab and closed in and still with the typical way of English life, boring.
I don't know, i love Montalbano but i also love the Sherlock series... i find it very brilliant for the way it reinterpretates the characters and the stories from Conan Doyle.
What an excellent tribute to the actors, the director, the cameramen. The series is quite the best set of films ever shown on British television. I just discovered collection 7 and 8 are available.. 7 is £9.99 and the normal two disc 4 episode set up.... but 8 is only 1 disc 2 episodes as far as I can tell... and £14.99... Amazon.. My birthday soon so I treated myself.. why not indeed, where is the harm? I only purchased Collection 7 for now.. It's annoying they keep changing who plays Livia. Waiting for more Young Montalbano now too.. very good series.. Catarella amazingly funny.. very good actor, like all of them.. Bang!! "sorry the door slipped".. Grrr….

Superb! I love Montalbano and all the others. The characters are so real, not just two dimensional cardboard cutouts like in many detective series where they just "shout and shoot" and it's all action and nothing else. They have genuine feelings and emotions and the actors convey that so well. You can tell they're a team who have bonded with each other over many years.
This is a great relaxation to me. i stick to my sofa if i stumble it on tv. they say they have success abroad (which I agree) but they still don't have all the series in english. He is one of the coolest actors ever.

Love Montalbano! He has us eating caciocavallo cheese with Sicilian green olives, among other delicacies from the stories. Having now read all the books, I am delighted that the films are so faithful to the Camilleri texts, which is very unusual in screen adaptations of famous novels. Bravo!

Montalbano is my guilty pleasure but the BBC has missed so many series, I have been trying to get the DVD's of the series. Luca Zingaretti is brilliant in the role.
We loved the show and still watch reruns in the UK. We went on holiday to Sicily a few years back, and stayed near Scicli where some of the show is shot, but we didn't realise that at the time. We visited Montalbanos "house" the police station and a few of the other plces shown.
A wonderful series that I never tire watching. I enjoyed the young Montalbano too. Both actors (the young and the older Montalbano) are extremely good actors and totally gorgeous! The rest of the cast is top notch too. It was a good idea that it was shown in italian with english subtitles when I was living in the UK. I thought I would improve my italian but in fact I mostly learnt swear words but it may come handy next time I go to Italy, Hahaha!
I'm South African and have read all of Andrea Camilleri's books. I eventually found some of the films by searching the net. Unfortunately, I don't understand Italian so have to find episodes with English captions. I absolutely love them. Great acting. ❤
The scenery is as much a cast member as any of the actors. Yes, I know they only show you the most beautiful places in the southeast but I just eat it up. The singer who's work appears from time to time I just love. My favorite scene, when the parrot signs the Internationale.

What a great series, convincing characters with a sense of humour that’s so lacking in almost anything coming from American T.V. Series now, unlike 20/30 years ago when they made better quality product.
I enjoy watching the show, My father came from Sicily, so I enjoy seeing the little they show of it, I have been to Italy but I missed going to Sicilia.
I thank my lucky stars for this series and all who are involved in it. It certainly brightens the gloom for me, even on the most dreary and or problem filled days.. Grazie molta tanta infatti (thankyou very much indeed) from South East England.

Fabulous series, love the actors - yet to see anything from America that is half as good.
There are far too many to mention. Unless you've seen all that is available, you can't make a judgement like that.

Oh, how we miss Pasquano! It was lovely when the police all silently ate cannoli in his memory. His death was clearly a great shock to the cast.

Young Montalbano casting is great too. They try to imagine the characters as while they were young and unformed but not an imitation of the originals.

I have watched this since it was first shown on BBC 4 it is enchanting. I would so love to visit the locations in Sicily.

Love Montalbano! He has us eating caciocavallo cheese with Sicilian green olives, among other delicacies from the stories. Having now read all the books, I am delighted that the films are so faithful to the Camilleri texts, which is very unusual in screen adaptations of famous novels. Bravo!
Hotter than hell 120 degrees skip the summers for certain I've been told, seeing Montalbano you know the scenery and cities are wonderful!!
Je suis d'origine Algérienne... j'ai un gros coup de coeur pour cette série....atypique....en raison de son décor....la mer....le ciel bleu....ces villages magnifique.....ces Villageois qui sont conservateurs... croyants.... j'adore quand on voit le commissaire nagé.....prendre sa tasse de café sur la terrasse de sa petite maison....j'adore vraiment.

Montalbano is my guilty pleasure but the BBC has missed so many series, I have been trying to get the DVD's of the series. Luca Zingaretti is brilliant in the role.

We loved the show and still watch reruns in the UK. We went on holiday to Sicily a few years back, and stayed near Scicli where some of the show is shot, but we didn't realise that at the time. We visited Montalbanos "house" the police station and a few of the other plces shown.

A wonderful series that I never tire watching. I enjoyed the young Montalbano too. Both actors (the young and the older Montalbano) are extremely good actors and totally gorgeous!
The rest of the cast is top notch too. It was a good idea that it was shown in italian with english subtitles when I was living in the UK. I thought I would improve my italian but in fact I mostly learnt swear words but it may come handy next time I go to Italy, Hahaha!
Love the series. Can't wait to see the next one.
I'm South African and have read all of Andrea Camilleri's books. I eventually found some of the films by searching the net. Unfortunately, I don't understand Italian so have to find episodes with English captions. I absolutely love them. Great acting. ❤

Love everything about it. A joy visually and fantastic actors. Everything fit just right which makes it such as fantastic series.
The scenery is as much a cast member as any of the actors. Yes, I know they only show you the most beautiful places in the southeast but I just eat it up. The singer who's work appears from time to time I just love.
My favorite scene, when the parrot signs the Internationale.
Really do love this series, especially Caterello the bumbling policeman who never gets things right. For me he steals every scene he is in.

I enjoy watching the show, My father came from Sicily, so I enjoy seeing the little they show of it, I have been to Italy but I missed going to Sicilia.

Nos recuerdan mucho con sus expresiones a nuestros seres más queridos que ya no tenemos junto a nosotros físicamente. Es doblemente emotivo, por la calidad espectacular de su contenido y sus actores, y la emoción de reencontrarnos, en cierta medida, con nuestros orígenes.
